9 Books that are Big at the 2016 Oscars

Some of the best movies of all time started life as a book. Think Gone with the Wind, To Kill a Mockingbird, Mary Poppins, The Godfather, Love Story, The English Patient, Lord of the Rings of course. We could go on.

We’re pleased to see that the 2016 nominations are particularly heavy with movies that started life as a book – some great novels, others stunning biographies. There’s the true story-inspired The Revenant starring Leonardo DiCaprio, nominated for best actor and for best picture; the movie Room adapted from Emma Donoghue’s amazing novel is nominated for best actress (Brie Larson); our previous Book of the Week Carol is of course a fabulous movie starring our own Cate Blanchett who is nominated for best actress, with Rooney Mara nominated for best supporting actress; the movie version of Colm Tóibín’s sublime 2009 novel Brooklyn is nominated for both best picture and best actress (Saoirse Ronan); The Martian is nominated for best picture and best actor (Matt Damon) and was originally a self-published novel by Andy Weir; The Danish Girl is adapted from the novel by David Ebershoff and is nominated for best actor (Eddie Redmayne) and best actress in a supporting role (Alicia Vikander); The Big Short, the novel by Michael Lewis about the 2008 financial crisis is nominated for best picture and best director. Bruce Alexander Cook’s biography of scriptwriter Dalton Trumbo is now a major movie, Trumbo, for which Bryan Cranston is nominated for best actor;and finally the Steve Jobs biography by Walter Isaacson, is now a movie with Michael Fassbender nominated for best actor and Kate Winslet for best actress in a supporting role.

Good luck to all those nominated in book related movies!
