A One of a Kind Bookshop: Books From a Bygone Era at Love Vintage Books

June 13, 2019

In Sydney’s north shore suburb of Willoughby is a gem of a store, a bookshop from a bygone era, Love Vintage Books. Unlike other stores of its kind, with dusty packed shelves and crammed aisles of used books (hey, I’m not complaining!) Love Vintage Books is beautifully laid out and preserved in a similar manner to the books it sells. It’s a one of a kind. It’s rare. It’s in excellent condition, despite its age.

Love Vintage Books specialises in rare and collectible books, and sells thoughtfully selected secondhand, rare and out of print books. It specialises in transport, military, history, travel, art and architecture, Australiana and modern and nostalgic literature, plus houses a vast collection of rare children’s books and literature, antique postcodes, maps, magazines and rare publications.

The store buys books privately but are very selective, and not interested in general secondhand books. Subjects they’ll consider acquiring, and only if the books are in excellent condition, include Early Australian books particularly inland and coastal exploration, colonial times, or Antarctic history and exploration, older travel books, or attractively bound or illustrated editions of literary classics.

“Love Vintage Books” is the trading name for “Somerset House Books” a retailer of quality rare and secondhand collectible books which was established at Bowenfels during the early 1990s and first had a presence as a mail order business and at rare book fairs in Sydney, Canberra, Uralla, Bowral and Melbourne. Somerset House Books has had shop fronts in Kurrajong Village, Blackheath and for a short while in Sydney’s York Street. From 1998 Somerset House Books began selling books online. Now Love Vintage Books has a store presence but is also online. If you’re looking for something in particular, contact the owner, Margaret.

At Love Vintage Books, they take the art of collecting and letting go of rare books seriously. In the past they’ve held workshops on how to downsize your collection. Participants develop the steps of a book colllection downsizing plan. These workshops are designed for those who are feeling overwhelmed by a collection of books they don’t know what to do with, belonging to themselves or someone else. It is common, that procrastination sets in together with doubts about value and concerns about adding “good books” to recycling or landfill.

Love Vintage Books is a gem, and takes the business of rare and secondhand books very seriously – as it should. Drop by and immerse yourself in the serious and utterly wonderful business of books from a bygone era.

Would you by any chance have the book ‘That Man is You’ by Louis Evely, and if so what price?

I used to have it but hard to find nowadays.
