An Incredible Book Shop

An Incredible Book Shop

We love books, and we love people who love books – but do you know what we love even more? Hard-working volunteers who are committed to providing their community with access to affordable books, all in the name of charity.

Mulga Road Books is a sweet little not-for-profit book store located in Oatley, a southern suburb of Sydney. Operating since 2010 by a team of volunteers on behalf of the Rotary Club of Hurstville Inc, the book shop sells pre-loved and collectable books of all genres, including Music, Biography, Cooking, Parenting, Self-Help, Australiana, Young Adult, and Health & Wellbeing, to name a few.

The book shop was opened as a major project for fundraising, with all money going directly back into the community. All books are donated to the store by members of the public, meaning there is an incredible range of both adult and children’s books.

Jennifer Hofmeier, a Mulga Road Books volunteer, says that despite being a fundraiser, the store has the same feel and atmosphere as a regular book store:

‘What we love most about is that it is an actual bookshop where people can spend time browsing our incredible collection of books, all donated to us. Working with like minded and passionate volunteers is an added bonus as well as being able to return monies raised to the community. Our greatest compliment is hearing the comments about us looking like a ‘real bookshop’.’

This atmosphere certainly shines through in photos showing rows of books painstakingly organised and categorised, displayed on neat wooden shelves that are adorned with lovely fresh flowers.

What makes Mulga Road Books so special is not just its inspiring philosophy of ‘buy a book, change a life,’ but the countless volunteers who are committed to making a difference in their community through the power of books.

If you happen to be a local, be sure to visit this heart-warming book shop – not only will you walk away with some great, diverse reads, but you’ll also leave knowing you’re making a difference to people in need. If you live elsewhere in NSW, why not make a day trip out of it and visit the shop? The village atmosphere of Oatley is lovely, and you can sit with your new book in one of the many surrounding cafes, or even at the nearby park.

Everyone deserves access to affordable, diverse books. If you have a heap of books lying around that you think may mean a bit more to someone else, why not donate them to a place like Mulga Road Books? To read more about how to donate, visit their website here
