Memories, Mistakes and Secrets: Review of All Your Perfects by Colleen Hoover

July 16, 2018

“It’s funny how you can be so happy with someone and love them so much, it creates an underlying sense of fear in you that you never knew before them. The fear of losing them. The fear of them getting hurt. I imagine that’s what it’s like when you have children. It’s probably the most incredible kind of love you’ll ever know, but it’s also the most terrifying.”

Quinn and Graham didn’t meet in the most conventional way. After all, how many couples can say they have their cheating exes to thank for bringing them together? Despite this less-than-typical start, it’s clear from the beginning that Quinn and Graham are destined for each other, and for the first few years of their marriage, they are completely in love, blissfully happy.

Things begin to change however, when Quinn realises she can’t have children. She’s dreamt of becoming a mother since she was young, and having children had always been discussed as a certainty in their future. As intimacy becomes a sad reminder of Quinn’s infertility, and one failed IVF session after another take their toll, Quinn and Graham start to withdraw from each other.

A couple who once told each other everything – Graham even used to beg Quinn to tell him about her dreams every morning – Quinn and Graham begin keeping secrets and hiding their feelings until their once-perfect marriage is on the verge of collapse. Although neither wants to lose the other, it seems almost inevitable and that’s when they realise the one promise made long ago, that might just be able to save them.

All Your Perfects is the latest captivating novel from the mega-bestselling Colleen Hoover. An author with a gift for crafting stories and characters that feel real, her nuanced depiction of a marriage in trouble and well-drawn, all too human characters, make for an absorbing story that is hard to put down.

Alternating ‘now’ and ‘then’ chapters, juxtaposing Quinn and Graham’s crumbling marriage with their whirlwind romance and their idyllic early years together, provide a welcome respite from the intensity of the couple’s present-day troubles, and help develop the present-day storyline in very clever ways. Hoover’s effortless prose only adds to the brilliance of this novel.

Although heart wrenching in parts, at its core All Your Perfects is deeply optimistic, and a powerful reminder that we shouldn’t let the bad things in life outweigh the good.

Bravo, Colleen Hoover.
