In Child’s books, Reacher is described as 6ft 5in tall with hands and feet the size of dinner plates. ‘The idea is that when Reacher walks into a room, you’re all a little nervous just for that first minute. And Cruise, for all his talent, didn’t have that physicality,’ said Child. ‘The size of Reacher is really, really important and it’s a big component of who he is.’
Readers have been complaining about Cruise’s suitability to play Reacher since his casting was announced in 2011, saying that Tom Cruise is ‘too short,’ and doesn’t quite fit the bill.
The first ever Jack Reacher film debuted in 2012 and grossed $218 million. The follow-up movie, however, grossed significantly less at $162 million and was met with mixed reviews, which perhaps partly explains why the film franchise has been abandoned for the small screen.
This news comes with an exciting invitation to readers who never quite warmed to Cruise’s depiction of Reacher: Child wants to do right by his fans, and is encouraging readers to make some casting suggestions. ‘I want all those readers who were upset about Tom Cruise to help me out – participate in choosing the right actor for the TV series,’ said Child. ‘We’re rebooting and starting over and we’re going to try and find the perfect guy.’
