Australia’s Top 50 Kids’ Books: 2017

VOTING NOW OPEN FOR 2018

Tournament at GorlanThere are lots of beloved children’s classics as well as some new favourites – and plenty of Australian books on the list too.

John Flanagan’s Ranger Apprentice series has taken the cake, with The Early Years: The Tournament at Gorlan the first on the list, and The Ruins of Gorlan at number two!

There’s plenty of well-known classics on this list, such as Dr Seuss’ Cat in the Hat (#22), Oh, The Places You’ll Go (#26), and Green Eggs and Ham (#18), and there are classics perfect for younger readers, like Winnie The Pooh (#37) and Wind in the Willows (#45).

No list of the best kids’ books would be complete without Roald Dahl, whose Matilda takes the number 4 spot, and The BFG at number 8. Also on the list are Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (#10) and The Witches (#50).

For middle grade readers, who can go past Australian favourites such as The 13-Storey Treehouse by Andy Griffiths (#6), Dork Diaries by Rachel Renee Russell (#9), and WeirDo by Anh Do (#16)? The list is filled with great series for middle grade children to read – we promise they won’t find any shortage of books here!

For older children, of course there’s Harry Potter at Number 5. But there’s also fabulous books such as Tomorrow, When The War Began (#38), Rick Riordan’s Heroes of Olympus (#39) and Percy Jackson (#40) – plenty of series for teens to get hooked on.

These are just some of our favourite picks – but all of the books chosen by you are absolutely deserving of their spot on the Top 50 Kids’ Books for 2017.

The lucky winners will be announced very soon!

Of the older classics “Winnie the Pooh” and “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe”would be pretty high. But more recently “Wonder”.

    Have the winners been announced?

  3. Maria C says:

“Pax” by Sara Pennypacker, “The Thing about Jellyfish” by Ali Benjamin, books like “The Poet’s Dog” or “Fly Away” by Patricia MacLachlan, “Ghosts” by Raina Telgemeier and the simply fabulous “Finding Serendipity”, “A Week without Tuesday” & “Blueberry Pancakes Forever” by Angelica Banks. I sometimes wish these annual “Best of” lists had another link along the lines of – “Incredible books you may not have stumbled across yet, just can’t miss and should track down!” So many special books out there, if we could just get more great ones in front of kids early to read, share & experience.
PS: Yep – agree – How good is “Wonder”! Better Reading x
