An Epic Book: Review of Funny Bones Edited by Kate and Jol Temple and Oliver Phommavanh

An Epic Book: Review of Funny Bones Edited by Kate and Jol Temple and Oliver Phommavanh

Filled with over 100 stories, jokes, cartoons and bits of silliness and written by a very long list of well-known children’s authors, cartoonists and illustrators Funny Bones is a must for the long summer holiday break!

Funny Bones editors Kate and Jol Temple and Oliver Phommavanh, have created quite an impressive tome. Inside you’ll find great stories that will capture the imagination of the most resistant readers, along with illustrations, cartoon strips, letters, jokes, poems and songs – the list goes on. Every time I went back for another read, I found something I hadn’t discovered the first time. All stories are unique but the one thing they definitely have in common is that they will get your little reader laughing.

I can’t list everyone involved as there are just too many (so exciting!) but authors/illustrators that you may be familiar with via Better Reading are Adrian Beck, Andy Griffiths and Terry Denton, Deborah Abela, Katrina Nannestad, Garth Nix, Jacqueline Harvey, Sally Rippin, Tim Harris, Tristan Bancks – I could keep going but I know that you are already on your way to pick up a copy so I’ll stop there.

It’s the perfect book for those who like to dip in and out – it can be picked up and you can read ‘The Ooooooooops Story’ by Jaclyn Moriarty, illustrated (wonderfully) by Kelly Canby, have a chuckle at the crazy antics that go on in classrooms, a bit of afternoon tea and then head back for some ‘Animal Astrology’ with Jessica Adams.

If your little reader enjoys reading about anything gross and disgusting, then perhaps they’ll enjoy boogerlicious with Licky Ricky in ‘Incredible Feats’ by Matt Cosgrove. Or they might like the charming song disgusting things about freshly picked noses and phlegm…

A quiz from author Katrina Nannestad to find your perfect handbag pet will provide some laughs along with ideas for the ultimate sandwich and some cautionary tales.

There are so many great things about this epic book, not least that it’s the perfect way for kids to sample new authors. Within this huge collection there are bound to be authors they haven’t come across and if they like them then you have a ready-made book list to take to the library or bookshop – and let’s face it, we all need as many book ideas for little readers as possible, particularly over the summer holidays.

Most importantly all proceeds from sales of this amazing collection go to international aid charity, War Child Australia – you can find out more below.

Oliver Phommavanh loves to make people laugh on stage as a comedian, and on the page as a children’s author of books such as Thai-riffic!Con-nerd and Natural Born Loser.

War Child is an international relief and development agency dedicated to providing immediate, effective and sustainable aid to children affected by war. War Child was formed in 1993 in response to conflict in the former Yugoslavia, and has since expanded its work to conflicts worldwide. War Child Australia is an all-volunteer organisation that was established in July 2002. Since that time, War Child Australia has been committed to providing aid to young victims of war all around the world.
