Story Time, Science, Graphic Art and More: Melbourne Writers Festival

We’ve been travelling around Australia writer’s festival by writer’s festival and this weekend it’s time to visit Melbourne. The Melbourne Writers Festival is the largest literary Festival held in Melbourne and it always hosts an exciting and eclectic line up of authors from around the globe. While there are no doubt sessions that should not be missed at the festival (find out more here) we are going to skip directly to the good stuff – Family and YA Day. Both held September 1, these two events are jam-packed with exciting events for young and teen readers.

Young readers can enjoy Hello Possum Story time, a session with author of Fashionista Maxine Beneba Clarke or show their artistic flair with an art of storytelling session hosted by Artist and writer Tai Snaith who builds a picture live on stage. They can also catch the highly entertaining Andrew Daddo and Oliver Phommavanh on stage amongst many other exciting authors.

If your little reader is also interested in a bit of science then The Story Experiment is the event you’ll be interested in. Held at science works, this is a day-long adventure where kids can come dressed as their favourite book character and get busy with the green screen and stop motion animation stations. They’ll also hear from writers, astronomers, and many others about inspiring science stories and they can enjoy story telling in the STEM lab throughout the day.

Also, on Sunday is YA Day where you can find Melina Marchetta (The Place on Dalhousie) and Randa Abdel-Fattah (When Michael Met Mina) talking about why they write for YA audiences. Nina Kenwood (It Sounded Better in My Head) and Jodi McAlister (Valentine series) will talk about the ups and downs of love for young people. Along with a session on the growing trend of YA fiction being adapted for the screen and a session with the wildly popular Amie Kaufman – where you can ask her anything!

These are just a few highlights of the day, so please go to the website for the full list of events and further details here.

There is also a very special session with Shaun Tan on September 7 as part of the Graphic Art Day, called A Meditation on Belonging, Shaun Tan will talk about his latest award-winning work Cicada and how bullying and belonging are continuously explored in his work. You can read our review of Cicada here. There are also events across the city at local libraries including one with Alison Lester who will read from some of her favourites.

So, what are you waiting for? Get online and start planning a great day!
