The Model Wife is a multi-generational family story looks at what happens when real-life betrayals and struggling relationships clash with outdated ideas of what a woman should be. Can you tell us a bit more about the book?

Natalie King is at the core of this story. She’s a hard-working woman, loving mother and wife. At almost sixty, she’s become the glue that holds her family together but on a day when it seems everyone is taking her for granted several things happen – a past hurt surfaces bringing with it unanswered questions she’d rather not face, an old book of outdated marriage advice re-emerges to undermine her and it seems everyone in her family needs a piece of her. Natalie questions her life purpose and leaves home. How will her family cope and will Natalie find the answers she seeks or has this good woman been pushed too far?

What was the inspiration behind The Model Wife?

It’s never one thing. Several years ago I visited Lombadina, home of the Bard people. It’s a remote community on Dampier Peninsula, north of Broome in WA. I got chatting to a woman who lived by one of the most beautiful beaches I’d ever seen and I realised her love of her country and her issues of isolation were not dissimilar to country women in the remote rural areas of my home state, SA. Later I was reading an article on women and mid-life crisis and it made me wonder what that might look like for women in remote areas and Natalie came to life.

What do you hope the reader will take away from this book?

I always hope readers have escaped reality and been engaged in an enjoyable read but also that the issues are relatable, the characters live on for a while in their minds and that they’ve immersed themselves in the settings. I want it to be a 3D experience for them.

What is something that has really influenced you as a writer?

My country, Australia, and the mix of people who live here. All my books have strong Australian settings, it’s one of the things I get positive feedback about. I love the diversity of our landscape and our people and I enjoy bringing them together in stories.

What’s your daily writing routine like and what are you working on at the moment?

Routine! What’s that? For me it depends on what stage I’m at. I’ve just finished the first draft of next year’s book. When I’m writing a first draft I get ready to start work by eight am – breakfast, dressed, home jobs done, as if I’m going out the door to work, even though it’s only two steps to my office. Currently I’m doing lots of chats like this one about The Model Wife and preparing to go on the road and meet readers so I’m in a whirl of thoughts for edits on the latest book as well as thinking about author talks and interviews for the new release. I could still be in my PJ’s at lunchtime. The excitement of a new book release sends routine out the window!
