The Other Passenger by Louise Candlish will Knock Your Socks Off

Louise Candlish, winner of the Crime and Thriller Book of the Year Award, has made her mark with bestsellers including The Second Husband, Our House and Those People, and this new novel reaffirms her status at the top of the domestic thriller scene.

You’re feeling pretty smug about your commute to work by riverboat. No more traffic gridlock or getting stuck on the tube in tunnels (you’re claustrophobic); now you’ve got an iconic Thames view, fresh air ?— a whole lifestyle upgrade. You’ve made new friends onboard — led by your hedonistic young neighbour, Kit ?— and just had your first ‘water rats’ Christmas drinks.

But the first day back after Christmas, Kit isn’t on the morning boat. The river landmarks are all the same, but something’s off. You disembark to find the police waiting. Kit’s wife, Melia, has reported him missing and another passenger witnessed the two of you arguing on the last boat home after your drinks. Police say you had a reason to lash out at him. To kill him.

You protest. You and Kit are friends ?— ask Melia, she’ll vouch for you.

And who exactly is this other passenger pointing the finger? What do they know about your private lives? No, whatever coincidences might have occurred that night, you are innocent, totally innocent.

Aren’t you?

The Other Passenger will knock your socks off! It’s a smart thriller, so suspenseful that, no word of a liar, I had a backache afterwards. I’d read most of the book in one position, tensed up the whole thrilling time. I’ll need to visit the chiropractor now, who will hopefully give me as many twists and turns as this Candlish did.

The story moves between the developing friendship between James and his partner Clare, and Kit and Melia, and also the police investigation after Kit disappears. Candlish explores the familiar territory that she excels in – the darker side of human relationships, petty arguments, jealousy, class structure and more. Taut, polished writing drives this perfectly executed story forward to its thrilling conclusion.

Louise Candlish is one author who consistently delivers, not just in the quality of her work, but also with regular releases, so thankfully you don’t have to wait long between reads. For those new to her work, there’s an excellent backlist to choose from. Whether you’re already a fan, or this is your first Louise Candlish novel, you won’t be disappointed. A thrilling ride from cover to cover.
