A Spooky Sequel: Read Our Review of Alice England Mysteries #2: The Eerie Excavation by Ash Harrier

In book #1 of the Alice England Mysteries, The Deadly Daylight, Alice England learned about exotic animals, allergies and how to make a friend. Now, she, Violet and Cal are back and faced with another mystery to solve!

It’s summer holiday in Damocles Cove and Alice, Violet, and Cal are off to Archaeology Camp. Sure, it’s not the K-pop camp Violet wanted, or the days of video gaming that Cal was looking forward to, but Alice’s enthusiasm carries them all off to the mysterious Malkin Tower on the edge of the spooky Pendle Woods. The work is hard, and the findings are small, until one day a fellow camper turns up something unexpected. What is discovered in the dirt will plunge Alice and her friends into another murder mystery. Do curses really exist? Is a monster haunting Pendle Woods? And who is creeping around the tower after midnight?

When camp ends and everyone is sent home without answers, Alice will need her signature logic, the support of her friends and her special talent to solve the mystery of Pendle Woods and bring an end to a family feud that’s been going on for centuries.

The Alice England Mysteries are a fun and engaging original series perfect for fans of Enola Holmes, Friday Barnes and A Series of Unfortunate Events. The first in the series, The Deadly Daylight was a fast-paced gothic mystery full of quirky and memorable characters that we absolutely loved. Now, Ash Harrier is back with its much-anticipated sequel, The Eerie Excavation, which follows Alice as she tackles a brand new mystery in Pendle Woods.

It was a treat to be back with Alice and her friends. A fresh mystery piques the interest of Alice as she sets off for an archaeological summer camp where things aren’t as they seem. From there, Harrier takes us on a journey all over town as Alice meets new characters and uncovers hidden secrets.

Cosy mysteries are fast becoming a favourite genre amongst young readers, and I think the Alice England Mysteries series is one of the best out there right now. Harrier’s writing is a perfect match for the genre as she perfectly blends fun and twisty plot lines with a pinch of gothic themes. As autumn settles in and colder days loom, there’s no better way to keep your kids engaged than handing them a series of two (so far) that they can devour in these upcoming school holidays..

Full of small town drama, puzzling mysteries and unique characters, The Eerie Excavation is a standout addition to the Alice England Mysteries. Perfect for ages 9+.
