One octopus!
Likes to eat tuna sandwiches.
Goes by the name of ‘Oswald’.
It all began when Etta decided to take a bath… And realised she wasn’t alone. In the bath sat Oswald. Etta had never had an octopus in her bath before.
At first, Etta thinks it might be fun to have Oswald around. But she soon learns that octopuses are not very good at being tidy… or cooking… or sharing… or even playing nicely.
Just as Etta has almost had enough, someone comes to claim Oswald. Oswald isn’t perfect, but does Etta really want to send him away?
Zana Fraillon has quickly become one of Australia’s most beloved children’s authors, with award-winning titles such as The Lost Soul Atlas and The Bone Sparrow. Her latest novel, Etta and the Octopus, is a charming story about finding friendship in the most unexpected of places.
Fraillon explores themes of acceptance, friendship and loyalty as young Etta tries to keep octopus Oswald out of trouble. At first, Etta is (rightfully) hesitant but slowly grows to love and protect Oswald from the hilariously troublesome Aquarium Manager Extraordinaire, Marina Prinkle Esquire. It’s wholesome, hilarious, unique and a whole lot of fun.
The illustrations by Andrew Joyner are a fantastic touch. Each page comes to life with his dynamic drawings that give the story an animated and lively feel. Each illustration perfectly complements Fraillon’s humorous writing, making for more than a few laugh-out-loud moments.
Etta and the Octopus also contains a few fun surprises at the end to get young readers interacting with the story. There’s a how-to-draw Oswald tutorial, and some instructions on how to set up and play The Royal Game of Oswald. Once your little one has finished reading, prompt them to grab a friend and have a game!
A quirky and hilarious illustrated series about an unlikely friendship that might just steal your heart. Etta and the Octopus is perfect for newly independent readers who are looking for something short, sweet and packed full of fun.
