Three budding journalist friends and their faithful hound uncover top local news stories in this delightful new series about family, friends and DOGS!
Eva has always wanted to be a journalist, so when she finds a stray dog outside her home, she might just have found her first case. Can she, along with her best friends at the Newshound newspaper, Simone and Ash, find Wafer’s real owner?
As the trail leads from one dead end to another, Eva realises that she might not want to get to the bottom of the mystery after all – because won’t that just mean she just has to give Wafer back?
Join Eva and her friends at the Newshound as they solve exciting new mysteries, in this new middle-grade series for dog lovers!
I was that dog-obsessed kid who, with sheer determination and impressive persuasive reasoning (read: incessant begging), finally managed to convince my parents to get a puppy. So, naturally, I fell instantly in love with this heartwarming, dog-forward series from Clara Vulliamy.
As both author and illustrator of this wholesome new adventure series, Vulliamy seamlessly combines expressive visuals with compelling text, giving the book an easy flow that will appeal to even the most reluctant readers. Plenty of drawings of adorable pups and dynamic scenes bring the story to life, making it both engaging and accessible.
In the series debut, we’re introduced to a gorgeous cast of characters – the Newshound trio are the kind of fearless, relatable, unapologetically themselves characters that I would have looked up to as a kid. Eva, protagonist and star reporter, is determined, compassionate and steadfast in her morals. Then there’s artistic Simone and brainy Ash. Ash happens to be non-binary, and their identity is pleasingly represented – and affirmed – with understated authenticity.
While The Newshound is simple enough for young readers to easily grasp, it explores important topics about our treatment of non-human animals and what happens to pets who are no longer wanted or cared for in their homes. I can see this book inspiring a new generation of animal rights activists, and I’m here for it!
With the second book in The Dog Squad series already slated for release in early 2024, readers can look forward to growing up alongside these loveable characters and getting to know each of them a little better as the series progresses. I wholeheartedly recommend it for lovers of action, intrigue and most of all dogs, aged 7+.
