With the past safely restored to the past, Trilby Moffat is looking forward to sitting down to a big slice of cake and a good crossword puzzle. But she’s about to find out that the job of Time Keeper is never done and the future has other plans for her… extremely perilous plans.
Trilby Moffat is in grave danger, again. When she arrives on a secret island outside of time, in search of her missing mother, she knows she’s in trouble. A strange festival is about to take place and Trilby is the guest of honour.
Travellers from all over time are flocking to this mysterious carnival with its treasure markets, floating cupcakes and a terrifying surprise. Now Trilby and her friends must race against time (literally) to reveal the dark truth lurking beneath their beautiful island. Friendship will be tested. Loyalty is stretched to the limits and a skittish prehistoric bird named Anton will destroy Trilby’s favourite jumper.
Just when she thinks time is on her side, Trilby is about to get a perilous promotion.
Much-loved award-winning Sydney author Kate Temple has written more than twenty books with her writing partner, Jol. The first Trilby Moffat book, The Dangerous Business of Being Trilby Moffat, was her first solo book; its sequel is just as brilliantly imaginative and quick-witted.
The Perilous Promotion of Trilby Moffat launches with a cliffhanger, and the pace and stakes only continue to ramp up from there. Fans of Kate Temple’s previous kids’ books know and love her wildly adventurous imagination, and she really hits her stride in this second instalment – nothing is off the table!
Fans of the first Trilby Moffat book, The Dangerous Business of Being Tribly Moffat, will love its follow-up. The Perilous Promotion picks up where book #1 left off and takes us deeper into the mystery of the illness wreaking havoc on the world. We also get to see Trilby develop into an even more determined, brave protagonist – and an excellent role model for her young fans.
But that’s not to say new readers can’t dive straight into this story, too. There’s a handy, accommodating narrator who quickly gets readers up to speed on details they might have missed where needed. This charming narrator also happens to be a university-educated thylacine – another madcap choice that Temple manages to pull off seamlessly.
Book #2 sees the return of crossword puzzle clues at the start of each chapter, adding yet another layer of intellectual stimulation to this already engaging and immersive adventure story. I love how Temple refuses to speak down to her young readers. Clever kids who delight in taking on a challenge will also love this about her writing.
This quirky middle-grade adventure series already has a huge fan base, and with such a satisfying sequel, I have no doubt it’s only getting bigger from here! A must-read for adventure lovers and budding detectives aged 7+.
