It’s Snow Time: Read Our Review of Funny Kid #12: Snowballs by Matt Stanton

It’s snow time!

Funny Kid is the mega-bestselling series from author-illustrator Matt Stanton that has everyone laughing! This middle-grade series debuted as the #1 Australian Kids’ Book and has legions of fans across the globe. He has published a number of bestselling picture books, including There Is a Monster Under My Bed Who Farts, Pea + Nut! and the Bored series.

Now, Stanton returns with Snowballs, book #12 in the super-popular Funny Kid series… and get ready to laugh your head off!

Every kid wants to laugh, but Max is the boy who can make it happen.

When Max and his friends holiday at a ski resort for the rich and famous, Max realises that everything he could ever need to be happy is all here in one place and he’s determined to fit in quick-smart!

Max is the funny kid, but will his jokes work in the snow?

The Funny Kid series sits at an unrivalled level of hilarity, with wit and fun laced throughout, and Snowballs is no exception. Max’s hilarity is brought to the forefront from the opening pages, and that’s before the story even starts! This addition is a gateway for new readers to get immersed in the Funny Kid world, while also reminding old readers of Max’s antics. It’s personal and inviting.

Escape the Australian summer and be transported to the snowy mountains with Max! Max is on a mission to prove that money can buy happiness, so when his family head to the luxurious Beauty Peaks Ski Resort: The Winter Holiday Destination of the Rich and Famous, he’s in the perfect place to do so. The resort is where he believes he’ll find the key to happiness… but will he?

Max starts mingling with the rich kids, finding every way to ‘think rich’, the opposite of his parents’ approach. Frozen pyjamas, fast cars, falling gracefully off cliffs, a wild mountain man, impossible chairlifts and a high-end fashion parade from Lost Property are just some of the things in store for Max and his friends in this brand-new Funny Kid adventure.

As the story unfolds, and Max is taken on a wild snowy adventure, he starts to really appreciate what this place has – spoiler alert: money cannot buy happiness. We see Max’s perspective on life, money, friendships and love shift as he learns important lessons on being thankful, and focusing on the important things in life – and that’s not anything material. A good message to send out as we approach the gift-giving and holiday seasons.

With distinctive illustrations and storytelling that will have you laughing out loud, this book is ideal for readers aged 7+. This is prime summer holiday reading material for reluctant readers. The heart-warming yet hilarious ending of Snowballs left me wanting more, but in the meantime, you can find me laughing as I re-read my favourite Funny Kid books – and there are a whopping twelve to dive into!
