Six Books to Keep Older Kids Busy this Easter

Easter is just around the corner, and more and more parents are opting to gift books instead of chocolate.

And while there are plenty of fun Easter picture books for little kids, it can be a little more challenging to shop for older readers.

If you’re unsure about what to gift this Easter, read on to discover our picks. Though they might not be directly related to the upcoming holiday, all of these books are tried-and-tested favourites. Trust us, even the most hesitant readers will love these books.

Fantastic Mr Fox by Roald Dahl

Know a child who loves animals? If so, then you can’t go wrong with this Roald Dahl classic. Following the very clever Mr Fox, this story is full of suspense, secret plans and – of course – mischievous animals. Even with the farmers’ elaborate plans to get rid of him for good, Mr Fox doesn’t feel too threatened . . . he has an escape plan of his own.

Matilda by Roald Dahl

Also from Roald Dahl is this classic book about a brilliant child who takes down a big bully – the headmistress of her school! In 2022, Netflix also created a film adaptation of the book, making the perfect post-reading movie night. From evil grown-ups to bold pranks, this book has everything kids love in a story.

Percy Jackson and the Lightening Thief by Rick Riordan

Inspire a kid to read long past Easter by gifting the first book in a series. Following a young boy with special powers, the series kicks off with Percy and his friends trying to catch a thief. If they fail, it’ll mean an all-out war on Mount Olympus. Best of all, there are plenty of books to read, with a brand new adventure coming this September!

No Brainer: Diary of a Wimpy Kid (18) by Jeff Kinney

The newest book from the bestselling Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, No Brainer is a laugh-out-loud book about friendship and perseverance. Greg doesn’t exactly love his middle school, so when the town threatens to close the crumbling building, he doesn’t really care. But when he realises that he and his best friend will be sent to different schools, he does everything it takes to stop the school from closing for good.

These Jokes Will Annoy Everyone You Know

Know a future comedian? We guarantee they’ll love this collection of hilarious jokes. With 605 ½  jokes and tongue twisters inside, kids will love pestering friends and family with these silly quips. Want a sample of what’s inside? ‘What do you call a fly with no wings? A walk.’

Wonka by Sibéal Pounder, Roald Dahl, Paul King and Simon Farnaby

There’s been plenty of talk of Wonka since the film came out this December, and this book is the best way to keep the whimsical spirit alive. Inspired by the film, the book tells the story of Willy Wonka’s early life, from his days of washhouse drudgery through to becoming the world-famous chocolatier.

I also give my child books instead of chocolate, and it’s amazing, my child loves it. I often catch him dreaming about reading a book in a certain corner. I am planning to have my child take an personality test. Is it too early for a 10 year old child?
