  1. Humans didn’t actually invent electricity. It already existed in nature, but we figured out fun new ways to harness it.
  2. Around a quarter of household energy use is from heating water.
  3. When a light globe is on, trillions of electrons flow through it, making it glow.
  4. Electrons have to be in a loop to flow.
  5. Coal mines are the biggest source of fossil gas emissions in Australia.
  6. ‘Renewable energy’ refers to energy made from things that can be renewed (for example, wind sun and water).
  7. If all the vehicles in Australia were electric, we would cut at least six per cent of our greenhouse-gas emissions.
  8. In New Zealand’s Taupo Volcanic Zone, geothermal energy is harnessed to create power.
  9. There are two types of nuclear reactions: fission and fusion. Nuclear fusion happens in the middle of stars, and scientists and engineers have been working on ways to harness this power to make electricity.
  10. Batteries contain precious metals and hazardous substances. Make sure you dispose of them safely at an e-waste collection point or battery store.

Lee Constable is the host of Scope, Network Ten's science and tech show for kids aged 7-13. Lee's background is a mixed bag with a Bachelor of Science (Honours), Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Science Communication Outreach. During her Masters, Lee toured remote and regional Australia as a Questacon Science Circus presenter and founded, produced and hosted youth-run social justice and sustainability radio show and podcast, SoapBox. Lee is the founder of Co-Lab: Science Meets Street Art where collaborations between scientists and street artists result in science-inspired murals that evolve live for the public. In 2018 Lee was part of the largest ever all-female expedition to Antarctica with 80 international women in STEMM as part of the Homeward Bound leadership program.From spending eveings as an Education Ranger with a spotlight in hand showing school groups the plants and animals of the Australian National Botanic Gardens to spending days showing kids around ACT's landfill and recycling sorting facility, there's no environment too hot, cold, dark or smelly to warrant some youth-friendly scientific communication.

    These are truly educational facts for kids. It’s important for everyone to know this to understand the relationship between the operation and breakdowns of various household systems. Later, you won’t have any trouble figuring out what to do if something malfunctions. SJ Plumbing and Gas came to our rescue when our gas heater stopped working during the winter. Their technician arrived on time and fixed it within an hour. I liked that they explained what caused the problem and how to prevent it. It’s reassuring to know there’s a reliable local plumbing company nearby.
