Fantastic book! I found the characters and setting very compelling, can’t wait to read more from this author Ted, QLD, 5 stars

This next instalment in the Renee Ballard series centres around three cases. The first one is unofficial – Renee’s ID, badge and gun have been stolen, and she needs to get them back without reporting the crime. The other cases are older – the Pillowcase Rapist and the famous Black Dahlia murder from the 1940s. Harry Bosch makes an appearance and his daughter, Maddie Bosch features as a volunteer in the Open-Unsolved Unit where Renee works. The book shifts between these three cases and really keeps you reading. I am less familiar with Renee Ballard but I really like her and want to read more. One of the most interesting things about this story was the use of genealogy in solving crimes. Another of the volunteers in the Open-Unsolved Unit is skilled at identifying genetic relatives and building family trees in order to help narrow down suspects. This book is another excellent read from Michael Connelly. And was the Black Dahlia case finally solved after all these years? You will need to read The Waiting to find out! Alison, NSW, 5 stars

As a long-term fan of Michael Connelly’s Harry Bosch character I was very pleased to receive a copy of this book. I found this to be a very easy read with believable characters and 3 storylines interconnected with the main character. The cameo by Harry Bosch is appropriately meshed within the book. Renée Ballard proves to be a strong character and her interactions with both Harry and Maddie Bosch is not overdone. The fact that the main character has flaws and is willing to step outside the law adds authenticity to the character and story. I enjoyed the detail of following the clues and the way in which the investigative pieces were put together in the pursuit of solving the crimes. Bosch + Bosch + Ballard = great entertainment. I rate this book 5 stars and look forward to reading other books with Renee Ballard as the main character. Grahame, NSW, 5 stars

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was well-written, fast-paced and easy reading. I found myself wanting to keep reading to find out the next piece of information as the Open-Unsolved Unit worked on old crimes. There were no lags in the writing although I do admit to being a little disappointed at the ending of the Pillowcase Rapist. For me, it fell flat. It seemed to have been hurried up in a way that spoiled the storyline and gave it second place to the Black Dahlia murders. Michael Connelly is the ultimate crime-writer and ‘The Waiting’ does justice to his reputation. I enjoyed learning more about Renee Ballard’s childhood and meeting Maddie Bosch, although she is still an enigma. I’m sure Connelly will explore her personality more in future novels. Maree, ACT, 5 stars

A compelling novel that cleverly weaves multiple threads into a master crime thriller. Harry Bosch features without dominating, enabling his daughter, Maddie to assume a more prominent role. As a volunteer she provides support in solving a cold case by tracking down a serial rapist. In parallel other cases and personal backgrounds are introduced, keeping the reader guessing the next move and wondering where are the connections. The story is engaging with credible characters, delivering a novel that is hard to put down until finished. Geoff, WA, 5 stars

Michael Connelly is a prolific author, with his Ballard and Bosch duo a particular favourite. The new instalment in this series – The Waiting – does not disappoint, pulling you in from the first page so you are totally invested in the plot and on the edge of your seat. Ballard and Bosch are both in fine form, although Harry is a little less front and centre, with the flip side being the presence of his daughter Maddie, keen to make a name for herself and get out of her father’s shadow. Fans of Michael Connelly will not be disappointed, and I would recommend this book to anyone keen for gripping, fast paced action. J, VIC, 5 stars

As a long time Michael Connelly fan I was interested to see where the newest book took me. Connelly handles the transition between his oldest character (Harry Bosch) by giving more page time to the already well established Rene Ballard as well as Harry’s daughter Maddie. The result is a page-turning thriller with multiple cases intertwining (including LA’s most famous unsolved mystery). Connelly adapts well to changing police procedures and never drops the ball in another episode of this amazing series. Highly recommended! Sean, ACT, 5 stars

I will admit I was apprehensive to read this novel, as crime novels are not my preferred genre. However, from the first chapter I was drawn into the storyline and questioning myself as to why I haven’t tried any of Michael Connelly’s books before. This novel is full of twists and turns, and it was intriguing to see how Renee Ballard would get out of the multiple troubling situations she got herself into. I love the friendship and respect between Renee Ballard and Harry Bosch, both on a professional and emotional level. I ended up thoroughly enjoying The Waiting, and it has in fact inspired me to branch out and include crime as a genre I enjoy reading. I look forward to reading more of the Renee Ballard and Harry Bosch novels in the future! Sally, SA, 5 stars

My first Michael Connolly and it won’t be my last. I found this Ballard and Bosch novel to be heart poundingly suspenseful. Renee Ballard leads up the Open-Unsolved unit and with her team of volunteers find leads into a number of old unsolved cases. When Renee has her car broken into while surfing and her badge and pistol stolen she finds a possible lead to unexpected danger, She calls on her old friend Harry Bosch to assist. This book kept me on the edge of my seat and I will be seeking out the Bosch TV series too. Plenty of action and suspense to involve every reader. Karan, VIC, 5 stars

I loved this book! I am a big fan of crime thrillers, but have never read any Michael Connelly before. It is part of a series of novels involving LAPD Detectives Renee Ballard and Harry Bosch, however it is easy to read as a stand alone. I will be hunting out more of this series! I would recommend for fans of great female cop series (think James Patterson or JD Robb). Truly hard to put down. Nicola, NSW, 5 stars

Michael Connelly’s book, The Waiting, skillfully conveys tension and intrigue inside a concise narrative. Through his precise and vivid writing, Connelly, renowned for his crime fiction, skillfully generates suspense throughout the novel. The narrative centres on an individual seated in a café, patiently anticipating the arrival of another person. As he patiently awaits, the reader is captivated by his thoughts and concerns, gradually revealing the veracity of his purpose and the anticipation of his arrival. The atmosphere of the narrative is characterized by tension, as each new moment intensifies the feeling of dread and suspense. Connelly skillfully manipulates the reader’s anticipations, gradually unveiling specifics and culminating in a turn of events that fundamentally reshapes the storyline. In this concise piece, Connelly demonstrates his exceptional skill in crafting a captivating narrative with few components. Although a brief read, this book leaves a lasting impression on the reader because of its profound psychological complexity and skillful pace. Ariba, NSW, 5 stars

A great read. There is so much going on in the one book and it was easy to keep up with. The main character, Renee, is resilient, daring and supportive of her team. The selection of cold cases is really interesting and keeps the interest up. I didn’t want to put it down. Tracey, NSW, 5 stars

I was so excited to receive a copy of this book! I love the books and the series!! “The Waiting” by Michael Connelly is a riveting, masterfully crafted thriller that grips you from the first page and doesn’t let go. As a long-time fan of Connelly’s work, I can confidently say that this novel exemplifies everything that makes him a master of the genre. What struck me most about *The Waiting* was its exploration of the themes of justice, morality, and the blurred lines between right and wrong. Connelly has a remarkable ability to delve deep into the psyche of his characters, and this book is no exception. The protagonist, Detective René Ballard, is a brilliantly complex character, full of nuance and grit. Her determination and moral ambiguity make her not only relatable but also deeply compelling. I found myself completely invested in her journey, rooting for her even as she struggled with the ethical dilemmas presented to her. Connelly’s writing is as sharp and precise as ever. His narrative style is clean and uncluttered, allowing the tension and suspense to build naturally. I was particularly impressed with the pacing of the novel. It moves swiftly, yet Connelly takes the time to develop his characters and settings in a way that feels real. The dialogue is crisp and authentic, adding to the realism of the story. I could easily picture the scenes unfolding before me, which only heightened the sense of urgency and anticipation. (Cannot wait for the series)! One of the standout aspects of “The Waiting”is how Connelly weaves in multiple perspectives, giving readers a fuller understanding of the case and its ramifications. Each character, whether major or minor, is meticulously drawn and serves a purpose in the broader narrative. This multi-layered approach adds depth to the story and keeps you guessing until the very end. And speaking of the end—without giving anything away—it’s a satisfying, well-earned conclusion that ties together the various threads in a way that feels both surprising and inevitable. For those who may not typically gravitate towards crime fiction, “The Waiting” offers much more than just a standard whodunit. It’s a thoughtful examination of the human condition, set against the backdrop of a gripping mystery. While it may be intense at times, Connelly balances this with moments of introspection and humanity, making it accessible to a wide range of readers. In summary, “The Waiting” is a must-read for fans of Michael Connelly and anyone who enjoys a well-crafted thriller. It’s a testament to Connelly’s skill as a storyteller that he continues to deliver such high-caliber work after all these years. If you’re looking for a novel that will keep you on the edge of your seat, provoke thought, and leave you thoroughly satisfied, then “The Waiting” should be at the top of your reading list.I cannot wait for the next one! Write faster please Mr Connelly!  Donne, NSW, 5 stars

This is the first Michael Connelly book I have read, and WOW! It has left me thoroughly impressed and eager to delve into his entire back catalogue. The Waiting is a masterclass in suspense and storytelling that grips you from the very first page and doesn’t let go until the last. With multiple intertwining storylines, the suspense is relentless, keeping you guessing throughout. The characters are exceptionally well-crafted; they feel so real and complex that you’ll find yourself deeply invested in their individual journeys. The book is brimming with unexpected twists and turns that will keep you guessing and second-guessing until the very end. Even if this is your first encounter with Connelly’s work, you will not feel lost. The narrative stands strong on its own, though it’s clear that once you’ve experienced his writing, you’ll be compelled to explore more of his novels. I couldn’t put it down and was left craving more. If you enjoy crime fiction, The Waiting is an absolute must-read. Carly, NSW, 5 stars

I’m truly a fan of this book. From the very first page, through to the last, it had me captivated, entertained, enthralled and guessing the whole way through. The multiple crimes really added depth to the book, and I loved that they weren’t forced to link to each other, and were just their own mystery to be solve. It was also refreshing that as the book progresses, the solving of each crime was staggered and not all solved at once. This allowed each triumph to be felt without overshadowing the next. Michael’s creative skill allowed me to feel that I was experiencing some of the beautiful locations myself, with the sand in my feet and wind in my hair. Crafting highly charged situations, believable locations and characters that each left their own lasting imprint on the storyline, and be warned, there is a twist that will blindside you and leave your heart aching. Even though this book is part of a series, it was an amazing read as a stand-alone and really only encouraged me to seek out the previous stories to enjoy. I highly recommend securing a copy and paying a visit to the Open-Unsolved Unit. Nerelle, NSW, 5 stars

Good read, in the style of James Patterson. Maree, TAS, 5 stars

Connolly is the master of crime. How could you go wrong with Maddie Bosch, Harry Bosch and Renee Ballard? I absolutely loved this easy to read crime story with lots of action, drama!! Renee is working the LAPD’s Open -unsolved unit. Maddie Bosch joins her and together they solve one of the most famous unsolved rapist and murder cases. Harry is recovering from cancer but that doesn’t stop him from getting into a sticky situation and doing what Harry does best. Reading one of Michael’s books is like putting on your favourite pjs, it feels like you’re at home, where you are comfortable with the characters. Awesome read! Highly recommend Judy, NSW, 5 stars

Another fast paced story from the king of crime writing. The Unsolved Murder Unit, lead by Renee Ballard, has DNA to help solve a long running case which runs alongside the loss of Ballard badge and also a mystery involving Bosch’s daughter. As always from Michael Connelly, a very readable crime novel Sue, NSW, 5 stars

Fast paced detective crime story with great characters. Michael Connelly does not disappoint with this his latest. Loved the crossover characters and the extra dimensions they bring. Highly recommend. Theresa, QLD, 5 stars

This was my first Michael Connelly book, although I know his characters Bosch and Lincoln Lawyer through the TV Series! I Absolutely loved this story, read it I. About 6 hours as I could not put it down! I will certainly be raising my dads bookcase for more of Michael Connellys books Karina, NSW, 5 stars

The Waiting is a great read. It is fast paced and very exciting. It’s fascinating to follow the trail of information related to the cold cases. I highly recommend, after all it is a Michael Connelly book. Mary, QLD, 5 stars

The Waiting, the latest in the Renee Ballard series, it can also be read as a stand-alone novel, without needing background information. This is a classic police procedural mystery. I will avoid spoilers in my review so I won’t detail the plots; I will just say the three separate plots are very clever and keep the reader turning the pages. Only one of the cases involves an actual cold case, which unfolded throughout the novel. Michael Connelly is a gifted writer, his characters are realistic and engaging.  Cathy, QLD, 4 stars

As a huge fan of the crime genre, this was my first experience reading Michael Connelly’s work, and I absolutely loved it. I’m definitely planning to explore more of his books. The story centres around Renée Ballard, the head of LAPD’s Open-Unsolved Crimes Unit. She leads a team of volunteers as they tackle various cases. The multiple storylines kept me hooked, and I thoroughly enjoyed the suspense and the challenge of piecing everything together. A great read that I would highly recommend to lovers of crime fiction! Belinda, NSW, 4 stars

Michael Connelly continues his series of LAPD’s Open-Unsolved Unit Cases with Renee Ballard as the main investigating officer. Two cases feature – The Black Dahlia Case from the 1940’s and the pillowcase Rapist from 20 years before. Ballard is also involved in a current case. Ballard calls upon retired Harry Bosch to assist with her current investigation while Harry’s Patrol Officer daughter, Maddie, volunteers for the Open-Unsolved Unit with new information about The Black Dahlia Case. Maddie is a delightful character – committed to law enforcement like her father, but wanting to be independent and not just “Harry Bosch’s daughter”. The novel features fascinating, detailed explanations of many forensic techniques showing how modern science and technology are able to revisit unsolved cases and succeed in closing them. As always Connelly brings the setting of LA – both the city and nearby beaches – vividly to life. “The Waiting” shows how the past can rarely be hidden forever – the truth will come out! Ballard’s own personal life is sketched in the background – but the ending indicates it will surely feature in the next Ballard and Bosch novel – much to the enjoyment of Connelly’s faithful readers. Frances, NSW, 4 stars

I knew of Michael Connelly’s Bosch novels and have seen the first few episodes of the TV show but I hadn’t read any of the 39(!) novels featuring Bosch so I was keen to have my first read of the character. As it turns out, Bosch is barely present in this one so I needn’t have worried, this is a Renee Ballard novel. Ballard has only been in 6 novels so my Wikipedia catch-up for her was much smaller. I feel pretty safe to recommend this to mystery-thriller fans as the various story strands and history are all really well explained and I never felt like I was missing out on anything. Great characters, some good tense scenes and real stakes make it quite obvious that Connelly knows what he is doing! Richard, VIC, 4 stars

This is a great book. It is rather fast paced – which I must admit I like. I also really like cold case mysteries, which this book covers. The book outlines that it is a Ballard and Bosch novel, I have never read any of these protagonists in previous Connelly books. You can read this as a standalone novel but it might have been advantageous to have read a few previous novels with these characters. Not sure. Otherwise I highly recommend this book. Jonathan, NSW, 4 stars

This story kept me in suspense until the end!!! And to have a few “investigations” going on in the one book added to the excitement. Was an easy read, which I love. I really enjoyed the main character Renee, and would like to read more “Renee Ballard & Harry Bosch” novels. Jen, NSW, 4 stars

Whilst there were multiple cases and many characters to keep track of, I enjoyed Ballard once again working with a member of the Bosch family, giving a peek behind the scenes of the LAPD while also solving suspenseful cases. Brianna, SA, 4 stars

Well known crime writer, Michael Connelly, masterfully crafts a story of complexity and suspense with his latest book, The Waiting. Skilfully weaving multiple threads back and forth across the decades of investigation; Renee Ballard leads her team of volunteers of the LAPD Open-Unsolved Unit through the complications of following trials of cold evidence. The various threads of Connelly’s story telling are tightly interwoven. The reader is enthralled as we see how modern policing can work with traditional methods of the past in the pursuit of the truth. Suspects and secrets are explored and Connelly’s narrative builds to a satisfying, suspense filled conclusion. Characters are finely drawn and believable; the intrigue of the departmental politics adds an extra dimension to the story. The reader is drawn into the experiences of the team and their struggles as they search for the truth. Connelly just keeps us guessing as he draws us further into the knotty web of the investigation. Highly recommended for readers of crime fiction. Chris, QLD, 4 stars

This is a great crime novel, fast paced and with a tough female lead who is instantly likeable, even for someone like me who has never read a Bosch and Ballard book until now. I found the wrap up at the end of the book a little bit dull but otherwise it was a terrific book and I will definitely be seeking out some older books in this series in future. Ruth, NSW, 4 stars

The Waiting (Michael Connelly) tells the story of Renée Ballard, a LAPD detective working on Open-Unsolved Unit. Ballard has to deal with her missing mother, her badge and gun stolen from her car while surfing and solving old unsolved cases which perpetrators could be even dead. Her unit is actually doing a great job and solving emblematic cases, but a tragedy happens to the unit and affect everyone. Cintia, VIC, 4 stars

It feels to me as if 3 cases were required to fill in the pages of this book. My problem is that Renee Ballard is quite unreasonable. She got her badge and gun stolen due to her carelessness but has a go at the lab technician when he questions why a suspect was born way after the supposedly crime happened. She also goes straight behind Maddies back when she tells Harry about the fact that Maddie applied for a job in her team. These things make me dislike Ballard. The rapist case sounded like the most interesting one but due to investigating the other 2 cases, did not get the attention it deserved. To me, it would have been better, just to concentrate to 2 cases. The book was well written but the conclusions of the cases were, to me, a bit average. Sandra, NSW, 3 stars

Featuring Detective Renee Ballard from other Connelly novels, The Waiting begins with stolen police property and goes on to explore the cases of the Unsolved Crimes unit, mainly a 25year old mystery featuring a “pillowcase rapist”. Woven with complex relationships, the story features lots of details about police work and does a great job at displaying how slow and complex to process of solving and finalising crimes can be, especially old cases. I enjoyed the story but it wasn’t a page turner for me. 3 1/2 stars for a readable crime novel. Meg, QLD, 3 stars

A fun who done it police tale with a couple of interesting side stories and an ending l didn’t see coming-a surprise twist in the plot. A stimulating read. Julie, NSW, 3 stars

        About the author

        Michael Connelly

Michael Connelly decided to become a writer after discovering the books of Raymond Chandler while attending the University of Florida. Once he decided on this direction he chose a major in journalism and a minor in creative writing - a curriculum in which one of his teachers was novelist Harry Crews. After graduating in 1980, Connelly worked at newspapers in Daytona Beach and Fort Lauderdale, Florida, primarily specializing in the crime beat. In Fort Lauderdale he wrote about police and crime during the height of the murder and violence wave that rolled over South Florida during the so-called cocaine wars.In 1986, he and two other reporters spent several months interviewing survivors of a major airline crash. They wrote a magazine story on the crash and the survivors which was later short-listed for the Pulitzer Prize for feature writing. The magazine story also moved Connelly into the upper levels of journalism, landing him a job as a crime reporter for the Los Angeles Times, one of the largest papers in the country, and bringing him to the city of which his literary hero, Chandler, had written. After three years on the crime beat in L.A., Connelly began writing his first novel to feature LAPD Detective Hieronymus Bosch. The novel, The Black Echo, based in part on a true crime that had occurred in Los Angeles, was published in 1992 and won the Edgar Award for Best First Novel by the Mystery Writers of America.Connelly's books have been translated in 31 languages and have won the Edgar, Anthony, Macavity, Dilys, Nero, Barry, Audie, Ridley, Maltese Falcon (Japan), .38 Caliber (France), Grand Prix (France), and Premio Bancarella (Italy) awards.Michael lives with his family in Florida.Michael also makes regular appearances on the TV show Castle .
