From the moment you open 25 Alive, a sense of dread oozes off its pages. Its atmosphere is addictive, luring you in with a chilling case. Warren Jacobi has been murdered and the reason as to why is one hell of a rollercoaster ride. The pacing that Patterson and Paetro have unearthed through the book’s short chapters is non-stop, moving from scene to scene like any good action thriller. I was surprised how quickly I managed to read the book (in less than 1 day!).
The setting of San Franciso is evocatively illustrated through Patterson and Paetro’s writing. There’s a sense of irony with the city’s warm exterior and bubbly neighbourhoods in contrast to Lindsay’s case and the clues left behind by Jacobi. Because of Lindsay’s past with Jacobi in the prior Women’s Murder Club books, you really get to see her in a new light. This case is personal and feels like it’s the hardest one she’s ever come across. But don’t worry, if you haven’t read the previous 24 books, you can jump right in. The book does a great job at easing readers into the story and introducing pre-established characters.
The writing voice in 25 Alive is simple, sweet and makes you want to read and read and read. Honestly, I stayed up ‘til the late hours of the morning reading this book–I loved it! Of course, Patterson has written countless books, but I was surprised to see that Lindsay’s case felt new and fresh. There are some excellent twists as well, which really made my heart race. My fingers are crossed for number 26! This book is well-worth the binge, so do yourself a favour and pick it up ASAP.
