Morocco, 1928. Eighteen-year-old Frenchwoman Marie-Madeleine is not the kind of woman who goes through life sitting down, something her new husband can attest. Her unconventionalities – rally car driving, flying planes and dabbling in intelligence work for the government – earn her a reputation, but she knows who she is at heart: an adventurer.

Paris, 1938. As Europe teeters on the brink of war, a chance encounter with a mysterious man codenamed Navarre turns Marie-Madeleine’s life upside down. Recruited to help build a resistance network known only as Alliance, she conceals her identity – and gender – as she navigates a perilous double life away from her children and the man she loves. Capture and death are only a heartbeat away.

I’m so happy Natasha Lester brought to us the story of Marie-Madeleine Fourcade’s brave and heroic story in her latest novel, The Mademoiselle Alliance. As I read this fabulous story I found myself in awe that this was the real life events of an unconventional dare-devil woman who put herself in danger for the sake of her country’s freedom. The writing is beautifully descriptive of the two main places set within the story – Morocco and France, it’s evident that the time in history and the sense of place is so deeply researched making this a story that’s fascinating and exciting to read, but also to learn about! This was a 5 star read for me, a story of a woman who led undercover intelligence groups that ultimately helped win the war and bring her country freedom. I really felt the connection to friendship and camaraderie! Julie, VIC, 5 stars

The Mademoiselle Alliance by Natasha Lester is a gripping and deeply moving historical novel that brings to life the extraordinary true story of Marie-Madeleine Fourcade, the only woman to lead a resistance network in Nazi-occupied France. From her adventurous youth—racing cars, flying planes, and refusing to conform, to her transformation into a fearless leader of the Alliance resistance group, Marie-Madeleine’s story is one of immense courage, sacrifice, and resilience. Lester’s meticulous research shines through, immersing readers in the high-stakes world of espionage, betrayal, and the devastating toll of war. The novel doesn’t shy away from the heartbreak Marie-Madeleine endures, separation from her children, the constant threat of capture, and the loss of her fellow spies, but it also celebrates her unbreakable spirit and strategic brilliance. What sets this book apart is its balance of historical accuracy and emotional depth. The pacing is taut, the prose evocative, and the tension relentless. For those unfamiliar with Marie-Madeleine’s legacy, this novel serves as a powerful and long-overdue tribute to a woman who defied expectations and risked everything for her country. The Mademoiselle Alliance is an unforgettable read, perfect for fans of historical fiction, WWII resistance stories, and tales of remarkable women lost to history. Tyson, TAS, 5 stars

Natasha Lester you have outdone yourself with The Mademoiselle Alliance; this is your best book yet. It is up against fierce competition from your other books that’s for sure but I was captivated from start to finish; I couldn’t put it down! Ce livre est trés magnifique! The book is set in France during the Nazi occupation in World War II and tells a fictionalised account of Marie-Madeleine Fourcade; a woman of incredible strength and determination who commanded many thousands of people in one of the most effective networks in the French Resistance whilst making great personal sacrifices in her own life. The narrative of this account brings vividly to life all of the risks and sacrifices that these selfless heroes made for their country and its people. This book was very easy to read and very difficult to put down as the story had you in suspense and on the edge of your seat throughout. I found The Mademoiselle Alliance a very interesting and engaging historical read which I am sure will appeal to readers who either enjoy historical fiction or who have an interest in France during World War II. You had me at the Prologue! Natasha Lester’s “The Mademoiselle Alliance” is an inspiring, edge of your seat historical novel on the life of Marie-Madeleine Fourcade. Set in France during WWII the story beautifully details the many roles and relationships in Marie’s double life, and through bravery and determination, she becomes an unexpected hero and leader of a resistance network. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in war history, political action, challenging gender roles, or those looking for a completely enthralling read. This book has inspired me to conduct further research on the central character and seek out other novels by Natasha Lester. Rebecca, NSW, 5 stars

This novel is exquisitely heart wrenching. The story of a spy network set up and led by an amazing woman in world war 2 France is unbelievable but true. From the fact that Marie Madeleine had to distance herself from her 2 children when she joined Alliance and eventually ran it, to the many arrests and imprisonments of her agent over the years. The heroes in this book through their complete love of France and determination to defeat the nazis at any cost shine out amidst the death and destruction all around them. These agents pushed on in defiance of German occupation of their country and tried their best to provide all the information that British allied forces and their leader Marie madeleine requested of them. The honour, loyalty and force joy and hope in each other and the alliance is expressed in their every ferociously defiant act! An enormously heartfelt novel, her best yet, I loved it. Kristy, NSW, 5 stars

Wow. What a fantastic read. Natasha Lester has obviously done a lot of research. I’ve read about Madelaine-Marie Fourcade before, but she comes alive in this historical fiction based on real people (mainly) and events. A brave woman with an incredible story as leader of The Alliance, a French information gathering resistance network operatiing during WW2. I was hooked from the first chapter and couldn’t put it down, reading well into the night. It has it all. Great story. Wonderful characters. Tension. Comradeship.Trust. Betrayal. Love and even some laughter. I also have to admit to shedding a few tears at times. I can see it as a film or TV series in the future. This book will stay on my to-be-read-again shelf. Loved it. I thoroughly recommend it. My favourite read so far this year. N.B. Maybe don’t read the author’s notes at the back until you’ve read the book. And a big thank you to Natasha for writing it. A woven tapestry of fact and fiction reveals the selflessness and determination of a dedicated group that fought the Nazis within. True martyrs that made a difference with their bravery and resolve. A heart stopping prologue sets the scene. Marie-Madeline from a young age embraced life and adventure and generally didn’t conform to the norm. A devoted mother who enjoyed a wild ride in life with rally car driving, flying planes and using her intelligence to make a difference. The fragility of peace was replaced by destructive war as the world divided in its respective alliances. Marie-Madeline was approached to join the resistance and fight the Germans in her own country with a network of fighters. Brave missions and intelligence gathering, true love and an insight into an underworld that undermined the enemy all mingle in this epic testimony. It takes talent to bring an era back to life and let the reader experience the horrors of life during the war. The emotions, descriptions and peripheral detail paid tribute to the real and very remarkable Marie-Madeline. This courage will now live on. Phil, VIC, 5 stars

I am so glad I read Natasha Lester’s The Mademoiselle Alliance. I had never heard of the Alliance nor it’s leader, Marie-Madeleine. A well researched tribute to ordinary people doing extraordinary things for their country, and revered leader. The first few chapters introduce Marie as an adventurous, capable woman and mother who finds herself with difficult decisions to make. When Hitler’s forces occupy France she chooses to help recruit, build, then lead, the resistance network known as Alliance. Initially underestimated because she is a woman she is soon recognised as a threat and must live on the run, constantly challenged, separated from her children, trusting only a few close network members. Eventually leading thousands, yet grieving members betrayed to the Gestapo. I loved the attention to detail; changes to Paris during occupation; character development; explaining codenames etc. Lester humanises the machine that was Alliance, bringing to life: frazzled nerves; deprivation; dedication; self-sacrifice; camaraderie; and trust between ordinary people striving to liberate their homeland. The authors notes, giving background and true names to many of the Alliance members, reinforced the historic credentials of this almost unbelievable story. Learning the fates of many members so close to the wars end was saddening. Sandra, NSW, 5 stars

An entertaining, heartbreaking and thrilling imagining of an incredible historical figure. A fitting tribute to the work of Marie-Madeleine and Alliance Jacqui, NSW, 5 stars

The Mademoiselle Alliance by Natasha Lester is tapestry of resilience and empowerment as well as tragedy and heartbreak, based on true characters and events during WWII. Amazingly the central character – Marie-Madeleine Fourcade – was the only woman to have a led a French Resistance network during this time. It is such a well-researched and emotive book that truly transfixes and transports the reader into a world where death is but a moment away. And yet, with resistance burning in their hearts, Fourcade and her brave alliance face adversity with grit and determination. Lester’s writing enables the reader to see, feel, taste and ‘live’ every experience. Leading a spy network and being responsible for so many lives brings an overwhelming weight on the shoulders of Marie-Madeleine, which at times can seem too overbearing. But leadership means accepting that you must let go of the warriors you work with, rather than holding them close and allow them to fly in the face of adversity, even if it those you love the most. I have not previously read a Natasha Lester novel and was truly engrossed and moved by the power of her words, the emotions she can evoke and her ability to bring such amazing historical facts to life. The Mademoiselle Alliance is a celebration of all who fight for freedom but especially for a women, with her unacknowledged strength in the face of adversity and her willingness to fight and protect those she loves. I will definitely be adding Natasha Lester to my ‘next read’ pile. Louise, QLD, 5 stars

First, I must say this book is quite intense but a wonderfully researched and written book that really brings to the fore the people, places and acts (both brave and courageous as well as horrendous and unthinkable) of any war, past present and/or future. This book had me hooked from the beginning and even before. I had never heard of Marie-Madeleine Fourcade and her plight to free France from Hitler and the Germans. This book really makes you think about the people who tried and tried again to end an horrific war as well as how it affected all the people involved. This book really gets into your head and your heart, it is passionate, historical and I can highly recommend it. It seemed like a long book when I started, was quite informative and descriptive, flowed well and was written in a way that you had to fall in love with these brave souls. And a must for this book is to definitely read the Authors Notes at the end as it will really put the whole book into perspective. A must read for any lover of historical fiction, war stories and tales of brave and courageous people. Donna, TAS, 5 stars

I have read a few books based on women in WWII and enjoyed them, I enjoyed this one although at times it was confusing trying to work out what characters they were talking about. It’s really interesting and you have to keep reminding yourself that this really happened. I really enjoyed it and would recommend it. Taryn, SA, 5 stars

This is a fascinating historical novel which gives insight into the life of a woman who was truly one of the heroes of World War II – and of whom I’d never heard before picking up this novel. I loved this, both for the strong story, and for the historical information. I was utterly fascinated by this story of a forgotten hero, absolutely entranced by her story, and found it quite unputdownable. Every detail is vivid, providing us with insight into her character and experiences. Sometimes I found Marie-Madeleine a little distant and not strongly emotionally engaging. However, I suspect that was deliberate on Lester’s part, an indication of how Marie-Madeleine had to compartmentalise and close off emotions to get her extraordinary work done. In order to make a coherent novel that readers could follow easily, Lester had to stray slightly from the historical record. None of the minor changes touch on the essential story of this amazing woman. I really loved this novel. It’s entertaining and absorbing, but it also tells an important story. It shines a light on a whacking great big gap in the historical record. This should interest both fans of historical fiction, and of actual history. Lorraine, ACT, 5 stars

What a fabulous book! I enjoyed every page. The story fictionalises a remarkable female leader of a resistance network based in Paris. Marie-Madeleine, a glamorous beauty, navigates a perilous double life. She is also a rally car driver, a pilot and a journalist. Most of all, she is a woman with a compassionate heart. Natasha Lester’s beautiful unfolding of the central character is the highlight. The reader steps into this historical era to share some of the emotional journey with all the characters. We feel the urgency of the alliance mission, the danger, the personal risks involved and the excruciating pain of separation from family. The care the feisty leader shows to members of the alliance and their families touched me. Lester describes Marie-Madeleine’s love for a fellow member in exquisite detail. The book is a delight to read. There are many heartbreaking aspects. I reread some sentences to capture the beauty of the language expressed. The epic story is a reminder of courage, commitment to a worthy cause of freedom, and the indomitable strength of the human spirit. There are many heartbreaking aspects. I love this book and recommend it highly. Lis, SA, 5 stars

This novel had me weeping with the injustices of a war fought over 80 years ago. Through Natasha Lester’s telling of ‘The Mademoiselle Alliance’, which was formed in France during WWII, you could almost feel the desperation, pain and fear of one of humanity’s most horrific eras. However, it is a privilege to learn the story of Marie-Madeliene and the resistance network she led until the end of the war in 1945. Her bravery, strength and passion for her country were an integral part of running the Alliance and in helping bring liberation to France in 1945. Although reading this was a slow burn for me as it’s not usually my preferred genre, by the end I couldn’t out it down and was freely crying for the lives lost in a war that should never have happened, and for the survivors who had to live their remaining days dealing with the pain of loss and the haunting images of death and destruction. This is simply an incredible story about an extraordinary woman. Sally, SA, 5 stars

I was thrilled to receive the book The Mademoiselle Alliance by Natasha Lester , as I am a fan of her books. This is a fictional story based on a real person, Marie-Madelainei Meric (later Fourcade) and Marie-Madelaine’s own written memoirs. It is set in France in the 1940’s, covering the German occupation of France up to the end of the war. Madelaine becomes involved in the Resistance movement, and becomes a leader of the group. It gives a good insight into life in that time, and makes us aware of the dangers that people faced, and how ordinary people became involved in many endeavours to rid France of the German occupation. I really enjoyed the story, it was both happy and sad, and made me more aware of what life was like in that time. The author has a skill with description, and I felt it was an important part of the story. Fay, VIC, 5 stars

I’m writing this review with tears flowing down my cheeks. Never have I read a WWII novel that elicited such emotion. For me, this was Natasha Lester’s best novel. I didn’t know if I was reading a piece of fiction, a memoir or if I was living the story in real time. What I do know is that out of a situation to be feared came a magnificent woman to be revered. The Mademoiselle Alliance spoke of characters plagued with uncertainty, struggle and despair; those same characters showed unwavering determination, strength and courage. This is a book not to be missed. Alicia, NSW, 5 stars

I was excited when I read that it was based on a true story about a woman (the only woman) who led a French Resistance network during WWII. What a life she led and so many sacrifices even being with her children who she wanted to keep safe away from harm. Finding love again and facing so many scary situations, living on edge but keeping her composure and determination continuously no matter what she faced. At the start of the book it was hard for me to work out what was going on and who was who, but I got more into the book as I went on and towards the end was deeply hooked to know what happened and how things eventuated in the end. I still find it hard to believe a lot of this book and what is actually true, but still a good read, fascinating and sometimes keeping you on edge. It has made me more interested in Marie-Madeleine Fourcade and would love to read a biography about her. Linda, VIC, 4 stars

Natasha Lester, what a gem! The Mademoiselle Alliance is a wonderfully written book based on the real life French Resistance Leader, Marie Madeleine Fourcade, a woman who did not stand idly by whilst the Germans invaded France. As both a mother and a patriotic French woman, Marie Madeleine did what she had to do to fight for independence for her country, taking the reigns of The Resistance, recruiting both men and woman, and liaising with the British in the fight for freedom. I would highly recommend this book. Anne, ACT, 4 stars

The Mademoiselle Alliance is a compelling historical fiction novel that brings to life the remarkable story of Marie-Madeleine Fourcade, the only woman to lead a resistance network in Nazi-occupied France during World War II. Through meticulous research and captivating storytelling, Lester shines a spotlight on this unsung heroine whose bravery and leadership were instrumental in the fight against tyranny. The novel masterfully weaves together themes of love, tragic loss, and magnificent leadership. Marie-Madeleine’s journey is portrayed with emotional depth and authenticity, making her a truly inspiring figure. Lester’s portrayal of Marie-Madeleine’s struggles and triumphs offers readers an intimate glimpse into the challenges faced by women in the resistance. The narrative is both gripping and heart-wrenching, as it explores the complexities of love and loss in the midst of war. Overall, “The Mademoiselle Alliance” is a beautifully crafted and inspiring story that highlights the indomitable spirit of women in times of great adversity. Natasha Lester has once again delivered a captivating read that will leave a lasting impression on fans of historical fiction. Belinda, NSW, 4 stars

Loved this historical fiction based on the true story of Marie-Madeleine Fourcade. Her selfless role in the resistance movement in France in WW11 was truly inspiring and brave. This book needs to be adapted to film. Kerry, WA, 4 stars

In the last few years I have become a fan of Natasha Lester and her incredibly powerful and inspiring historical fiction novels. This book took me longer than most to read but not because I didn’t like it. It is a book full of historical facts and amazing characters that you just need to slow it down and take it all in. This book is based on the life of the only woman to lead an Alliance for France in WWII. She led 3000 agents to bring down the Germans, with her bravery, her determination and her courage. She was one incredible woman that so many, including myself, have never heard of. Marie-Madeleine was a fiery girl, who loved to travel and drive race cars. She was a mother and she was passionate about her children and those close to her. She led with her heart and her head. She had to make some tough decisions and she had to keep everybody alive.it was a story that will stay with me. I highly recommend reading the authors note after you have finished the book, as always get some insight into Natasha’s writing process and research which is always so interesting. Mandy, NSW, 4 stars

Well, the overall story was good, though I found the simplicity a little tedious. I prefer the author consider the reader an intelligent being. Hard to get into tbh but after about 80 pages, it got more interesting. That there have been, and will continue to be, such brave, incredible women leaves me in awe. Erin, VIC, 4 stars

While typically not a genre I regularly engage with and it took a little while to get all the characters placed in my head I found that I really enjoyed this book. What an amazing woman Marie-Madeleine was and what horrific times people lived through during WWII. The depth of human suffering they persevered through but yet the resilience, courage and bravery so many people demonstrated during this time is truly remarkable. The lengths that Marie-Madeleine and her comrades went through to fight for their country and the lives of their countrymen and others was absolutely amazing. Through reading this you could feel the desperation leeching off the pages as you turned quicker and quicker to see if there hopefully was at least some joy to be had at the end in such bleak and difficult times. So well researched by Natasha it actually truly was an honour to receive an ARC of this story as the people and scenes described really stayed with you after finishing and the courage and resilience they showed. Would highly recommend this to others and will be interested to see what amazing story Natasha brings to us next. Tracy, WA, 4 stars

What a good book about the work of a very brave lady in WW2 in France, I always enjoy books that are based on true events. Marie-Madeleine was a hero who helped with the war effort The descriptions of what she went through brought a tear to my eye Pat, QLD, 4 stars

Wow! The Mademoiselle Alliance was an amazing read. The main character, Marie-Madeleine, is a gutsy, brave woman who led her resistance network fearlessly. The fact that this page-turning historical novel is based on a true story is extraordinary. The heroic actions of the remarkable Marie-Madeleine are powerful and have stayed with me since finishing the book. Kelly, QLD, 4 stars

Natasha Lester is always a favourite author of mine so I was thrilled to read an early copy of the Mademoiselle Alliance which comes out in May. This story tells of the only female leader in the Resistance, her lives and loves and her heroic escapades many of which are true. It’s a well researched look at an inspiring female leader during World War Two. Michelle, QLD, 4 stars

I’ve read Natasha Lester’s books previously to reading The Mademoiselle Alliance. I did find this book more difficult to get into compared to her previous books that I’ve read. In saying that, once I got going, it started to pick up and I got through all 398 pages in about a week. If you think you’re in for a quick read with a Natasha Lester book, than your mistaking. There were parts in The Mademoiselle Alliance that I thought could have been left out, and parts that just seemed to re hash what was written earlier in the book. I have to say I think this was my least favourite Natasha Lester book from those books of hers that I’ve read. I do enjoy the historical aspects of her books, as well as the fact that her books are about prominent women in history. But I just found that this book just seemed to drag on and could have easily been 100 pages less than it is. Amanda, NSW, 4 stars

I fear I may be in the minority here, but having read all of Natasha’s books and a huge fan, I must say this one was a bit of a slog to get through. For me it was too much like reading a non-fiction book, too plot driven and not enough character driven, too many characters to keep track of and a bit repetitive. The last 100 pages the pace picked up but it was not my favourite book of hers. The detail she goes to is commendable but it took away from being a good read in my opinion. Janine, VIC, 3 stars
