PODCAST: Madeleine Cleary on Dedication and Teamwork Behind Crafting Compelling Narratives

Madeleine Cleary talks to Cheryl about her path to publication, the importance of collaboration with editors, and how balancing a full-time job with writing has shaped her creative process. Her latest work, The Butterfly Women, is out now.

About The Author

Madeleine Cleary is a writer who lives at the foothills of the Dandenong Ranges on Wurundjeri country in outer Melbourne. Her debut novel of historical fiction, The Butterfly Women, will be published in May 2025 with Affirm Press. It is inspired by Madeleine’s recently discovered connection to the thieves and prostitutes of the early colony of Melbourne, and it was this research that was the novel’s genesis.

Madeleine’s most recent novel, In Her Own Words, was shortlisted in 2024 for The Australian Fiction Prize. In 2022, she dabbled in short stories, and was honoured to find some success in several esteemed local competitions, including Stringybark Stories, the E.M Fletcher Writing Award, and the Ethel Webb Bundell Literary Short Story Competition. Madeleine holds a Master of Arts (International Relations) degree from the University of Melbourne.

While she has established a wonderful career in the Australian Public Service, including stints working in Canberra and overseas, writing was always her (secret) passion. A former bookseller, Madeleine enjoys being part of the wider reading and writing community in Australia. She is a co-host of The Book Deal Podcast with fellow podcaster, Tina Strachan, a podcast that helps to inspire and motivate aspiring writers.

When not working, podcasting or writing, Madeleine is generally plucking weeds in a cathartic trance on her steep ‘hills’ block, reading, eating, chatting or bush walking.

        Synopsis

It's 1863, and Melbourne is transitioning from a fledgling colony to a thriving, gold-fuelled metropolis. But behind its shiny new façade, the real Melbourne can be found in the notorious red-light district of Little Lon, full of brothels where rich and poor alike can revel all night. The most glamorous among them is Papillon, home to the most alluring women in the city.

For poor Irishwoman Johanna Callaghan, a job at Papillon could be her ticket to success, but in a time when women's lives are cheap, it also brings great danger. Meanwhile, for respectable women like journalist Harriett Gardiner, Papillon is strictly off-limits, but when a murderer begins stalking the streets of Little Lon, she becomes determined to visit it and find the truth.

As both women are drawn into the hunt for the killer, a long-hidden side of old Melbourne is revealed. Lush, dark and meticulously researched, The Butterfly Women weaves romance and mystery into an unforgettable tale of Australian history, and the women so often erased from it.

Took up boxing to stay active and got curious about supplements. Searched for a site with enclomiphene advice. Stumbled on https://valhallavitality.com/blog/the-best-time-to-take-enclomiphene and it’s solid. It breaks down the best times to use enclomiphene for vitality. Personally it helped me plan my fitness goals better.

Ignoring animal sounds analysis of whines can worsen anxiety, especially in sensitive silent dog whistle sound breeds. Here’s the catch: Unaddressed pulsating dog whines might lead to behavioral quirks, breaking your pup’s trust.
