Three reasons to read it:

  1. This alphabet story isn’t just about letters and words. Hosking brings a fresh, funny twist to the classic format, turning each letter into a mini adventure full of surprises and humor. If you think alphabet books are boring, this one will change your mind! It’s an excellent choice for parents and teachers who want to make early literacy enjoyable and memorable.
  2. The story centers around a rabbit and playfully explores the ups and downs of wanting a pet. It captures the excitement and silliness that come with pet dreams, making it relatable for kids who love animals or wish they had one.
  3. Gifford, a much-loved illustrator, paints every page with lively, eye-catching colors and playful scenes. Her art makes the story jump off the page and keeps kids (and grown-ups!) fully engaged. It’s a visual feast that perfectly matches the book’s fun tone.

About the author:

Jackie Hosking is a Nigerian-born Cornish Australian who moved to Australia when she was ten. Jackie began writing for children after completing a creative writing course at her local community house in a seaside town off The Great Ocean Road in Victoria. In 2012 she was awarded a Maurice Saxby Mentorship and in 2011 she mentored a Maurice Saxby Mentee on writing in rhyme, and in 2019 Jackie was awarded a May Gibbs Creative Time Fellowship. Her picture book The Croc and the Platypus was published by Walker Books Australia in 2014, followed An Aussie Christmas Gum Tree, The Amazing Australian Road Trip, The Amazing Australian Camping Trip. More picture books with Walker are forthcoming, including When Santa Got Stuck in the Gum Tree and The Kids Who Rescued Easter.

Lucinda Gifford is the author and illustrator of many well-loved children’s books. She was brought up in the north of Scotland, where there are a million times more seagulls than humans. To get away from the seagulls, Lucinda went to Edinburgh to study architecture. After this she had a fantastically successful career in advertising, coming up with over-the-top campaign ideas and doodling masterpieces on a big pad of paper. Years later, Lucinda realised that her favourite things were doodling and exaggerating. So she put some of her best drawings and most unlikely stories in a folio and started looking for work in children’s books. Lucinda has since illustrated over 30 books, eight of which she has also written. She lives in Melbourne, Australia. But sometimes, from her studio, she can still hear the squawk of the gulls and the roar of the North Sea. Her favourite things to draw include wolves, dragons and castles.

About the author

Lucinda Gifford

Lucinda Gifford was brought up in Scotland and originally intended to become an architect, studying Architecture at Edinburgh and Bath Universities. Lucinda’s love of drawing buildings was cancelled out at the time by an overwhelming disinterest in construction sites and the newly-introduced CAD technology, and so she went on to spend a very enjoyable fifteen years in Auckland, London and Melbourne working in advertising and design. These days, Lucinda lives with her family in Melbourne’s northern suburbs – and works as an illustrator, author-illustrator and graphic designer from her cosy, messy home studio. Lucinda uses pencil, ink, crayon, marker, and watercolour to produce her illustrations, and usually uses PhotoShop to put everything together. When not sketching, designing or developing story ideas, Lucinda enjoys plot twists, beach walks and staring out the windows of Melbourne trams.
