PODCAST: Allison Rushby on Writing Across Genres, 25 Years of Storytelling, and the Journey to Slashed Beauties

Having failed at becoming a ballerina with pierced ears (her childhood dream), Allison Rushby instead began a writing career as a journalism student at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia. Within a few months she slunk sideways into studying Russian, began writing her first novel and, most importantly, joined the Chocolate Appreciation Society. Over the past ten years, she has published five books for young adult readers and five for adult readers in the women’s fiction genre. She is originally from Brisbane, Australia, but spent 2011 and most of 2012 living in Cambridge, UK, where she mainly spent her days whingeing constantly about the weather.

Allison talks to Cheryl about the differences between writing historical fantasy and middle grade fiction, her career before becoming an author, 25 years of writing books, and the highs and lows of publishing her latest novel, Slashed Beauties, which is out now.

Allison Rushby

Allison Rushby, the daughter of an author, was raised on a wholesome and steady diet of classic English literature. Some of her favourite books, re-read countless dog-eared times include Rumer Godden’s The Dolls’ House, Frances Hodgson Burnett’s The Secret Garden, Dodie Smith’s I Capture the Castle and Noel Streatfeild’s “Shoes” series. She has long been a fan of cities with long, winding histories, wild, overgrown cemeteries, red brick Victorian museums, foxes and ivy. While looking for new online games, I came across a discussion about entertainment in Australia at Alice Springs Casino. I decided to give it a try. First, I launched roulette — the excitement appeared literally from the first seconds. Then I switched to a slot with multipliers, and it kept me busy for a long time. I liked that the process was smooth, the site didn’t freeze, and everything worked perfectly. The atmosphere was pleasant, and I had an interesting evening.
