Easter is on the horizon and what better way to celebrate (chocolate aside) than to share an Easter story with your little reader.
There have always been lots of rabbit stories around but it’s nice to see a few more Bilby Easter books emerging and Little Bilby’s Easter Egg Hunt, out this month, combines bilbies and a wide variety of other Australian animals – the illustrations are simply exquisite!
It’s not always easy to engage the board book cohort but exploring Australian animals in their natural habitats using rhyme, repetition and animal noises is guaranteed to keep them captivated.
Near bush and scrub and oceanfront, they tiptoe on their Easter hunt…
A group of baby bilbies are on an Easter egg hunt. They find all kinds of eggs – a kookaburra’s egg, a turtle’s egg, a cassowary’s egg – before the little bilbies finally find what they’ve been looking for: Easter eggs to share with all their friends.
The vibrant illustrations by Jody Pratt clearly show her love for nature, and in particular animals. Pratt showcases the diversity of Australia’s egg-laying animals with each spread revealing an egg in its natural environment. Children’s author Yvonne Mes then asks little readers the question, ‘Whose egg could this be?’. After turning the page, the egg is matched with the animal it belongs to.
Australian wildlife in general is also on the radar after the tragic bushfires so for those who are starting to take an interest you can use this simple story to build on their knowledge.
It’s a handy board book format so if there is chocolate involved then a simple wipe over with a cloth will suffice. And let’s face it, you know that there will be chocolate involved – even if it’s you eating it!
Little Bilby’s Easter Egg Hunt would make a really lovely Easter gift for all the little readers in your life and you’ll be thanked for not adding to the growing pile of chocolate.
