An electrifying thriller from an exciting new voice in crime fiction: One million viewers witness a popular TV presenter commit suicide live on air – so why is his twin brother convinced it was murder?
At 9.01 pm, TV presenter Sam Midford delivers the monologue for his popular current affairs show Midnight Tonight. He seems nervous and the crew are convinced he’s about to propose to his girlfriend live on air.
Instead, he pulls out a gun and shoots himself in the head.
Sam’s grief-stricken twin Harry is convinced his brother was murdered. But how can that be, when one million viewers witnessed Sam pull the trigger?
Only Jack Quick, a disgraced television producer in the last days of a prison sentence, is desperate enough to take Harry’s money to investigate.
But as Jack starts digging, he finds a mystery more complex than he first assumed. And if he’s not careful, he’ll find out first-hand that there’s more than one way to kill someone…
Coming from a comedic background, Stevenson has really shown his talent by making the step into crime fiction with some remarkable mysteries and some really fascinating characters. After his amazing debut, Greenlight, he has once again created an electrifying story that will shake you to your core. Either Side Of midnight is a complex and compelling story that keeps the reader on their toes to the very last page.
The protagonist, Jack Quick, a complicated character with demons of his own, is drawn into this intriguing case, forcing him to face his own problems while solving this bone-chilling mystery. The explosive journey to the conclusion will shock you, and just when you think you understand what’s going on, Stevenson will throw another curveball at you.
My favourite part about this book was the incredibly tense atmosphere that Stevenson creates to reel the reader in while you slowly unlock the clues to Sam Midford’s demise. Stevenson doesn’t hold back with the twists and turns, theories, and speculation. He knows how to hook the reader and doesn’t try to hide it.
Either Side Of Midnight is a truly thrilling novel about family and a mystery that’s begging to be solved. The family dynamics between the Quicks’ and Midfords’ show a dark parallel that Stevenson writes with brilliance. If you’re after a mystery that won’t hold back and will keep you guessing, this book won’t let you down. We here at Better Reading can’t wait to see what Stevenson comes up with next!
