Do you see what I see?
Is that a clock or a car? Is that a vegetable or a volcano? I think that penguin might be a piano!
Dynamic and beautifully designed, Look Book is the interactive ‘this or that’ alphabet book that shows me one thing and you another!
This ingenious picture book by author Dan Marshall is two-fold. Look Book helps to build vocabulary with terms such as ‘yoga,’ ‘underwater,’ ‘jelly beans,’ and more – words we don’t often see used for this age bracket. The book also teaches young readers about perspective and a new way of looking at things.
The illustrations are cleverly designed by merging two alphabet options in one image. While one option is coloured, the other is in grey. This illustrates and ingrains a message that sometimes the most obvious option might be staring at you in the face (through the coloured option) or that there is another less obvious option that might be correct, too (the grey option). This helps demonstrate decision-making and learning to weigh up all your options – and it’s never too early to start learning this.
Marshall is a designer, illustrator, and writer who runs a design agency, Studio Marshall. He has been drawing since he was a child and it never fails to surprise him that as a grown-up, he is now paid to do just that.
Marshall’s first book, Mind Blown, was born from his passion for graphic design, communicating information visually and his deep curiosity for the incredibly strange place that is our universe. It is clear that these same passions are embedded in the messages Look Book, Marshall’s second book, exudes.
This book ticks all the boxes: vibrant colours, assists in building up vocabulary, and offers visual cues. I recommend it for readers aged 2+. Parents will delight in seeing what alphabet option their child is drawn to first, and then their fascination in discovering both options are there on the page. Dive inside this colourful collection and see if your child has found a new way of looking at things!
