20 Years of Little Wombat: Read our Review of the Little Wombat Series

Sometimes I like to curl up in a ball, so no one can see me, because I’m so small.

Can you believe it’s been 20 years of the Little Wombat? We hardly can! Over 1 million Little Wombat books have been sold, garnering international recognition for its warm and humorous depiction of an iconic marsupial.

It all started with book #1 in the series, Sometimes I Like to Curl Up in a Ball. In this book, Little Wombat spends a day doing his favourite things: strutting around and around like a pigeon until he falls down, sticking out his tongue and pulling funny faces. And then he jumps as high as he can and sees how much noise he can make when he lands.

But when the sun sets and the day ends he does the thing he likes best of all: going back home to his mother and curling into a ball. It’s an entertaining story about a playful little wombat exploring the world around him.

I’ve grown up with this series, and I find something new to love, appreciate and take away from these stories every time I read them. For instance, as a child Found You, Little Wombat taught me the importance of owning up to your actions. As an adult, I’ve learnt that you should never be afraid to ask for a helping hand. It’s impactful and timeless.

The series’ soft-toned illustrations portray an endearing character and the friendly world he inhabits. The images, along with the lyrically rhyming text, combine to make an uplifting bedtime story.

Chares Fuge has illustrated all the books in the series and has been the author of select titles alongside authors Angela McAllister and Vicki Churchill. Together, they’ve created charmingly illustrated, deeply reassuring Little Wombat stories about getting lost and found again.

The Little Wombat series taps into the everyday world of children aged 3+. It celebrates playing with your friends, making lots of noise, and cuddling up with a parent. I’ve loved growing up with this iconic character, and I have no doubt current and future generations will too!

About the author

Vicki Churchill

Author, artist and photographer, Vicki Churchill, wrote the modern classic ‘Sometimes I like to curl up in a ball’, in her 20s. Originally a poem about childhood, it soon became obvious it was the perfect narrative for a children’s book, and a wonderful text to accompany Charlie Fuge’s, newly created wombat character. After an exciting decade or so working around the world with artist and advertising photographers, Vicki felt it was time to get serious about her writing. In 2018 she commenced an MA in Creative Writing at Oxford Brookes, and is currently working on her debut poetry pamphlet. Though she is not directly writing for children, she keeps an eye out for poems that could develop into another project such as ‘Sometimes I like to curl up in a ball’.
