Lt. Eve Dallas hasn’t even arrived at work when her first call of the day comes in. Alva Quirk – forty-six years old, sidewalk sleeper – was beaten to death with a crowbar. Known to the local cops for handing out origami flowers to anyone who gives her change, Alva was well-liked but with no fixed address, no job and no family, there’s no one to remember her.
Eve has barely had time to examine the crime scene when her second victim of the morning is discovered just a block away. Make that second and third. Jane Doe – a well-dressed young mother and her baby shot and buried over 40 years ago.
Two very different victims in the same location with no one to claim them. Coincidence or does the history of the site hold the answer? To uncover the truth Eve must delve into a world of family businesses, Russian mobsters and shady dealings. These two women may have been forgotten in their lifetimes, but Eve Dallas won’t let them be forgotten in death…
The release of a new Eve Dallas novel is something I’m always looking forward to. Forgotten in Death is the whopping 53rd novel in the series, yet it still manages to tell an engaging, original story. You’d think after so many instalments that J.D. Robb, a pseudonym for bestselling author Nora Roberts, would have run out of ideas. This book proves how much more she has to offer.
Setting plays a major role in this series – it’s 2061 New York, and Robb’s futuristic city is vivid in detail, fresh and exciting. It’s easy to see why this series is so popular.
And of course, it wouldn’t be an In Death novel without tough-as-nails protagonist Eve Dallas. Once again, she’s trying to maintain a work-life balance with her eccentric husband Roarke while solving yet another murder. Even after all this time, her character remains compelling. In fact, every novel adds more depth to Eve. Everything comes crashing together for an absolutely thrilling ending, leaving Eve to pick up the pieces as usual.
If you haven’t picked up an Eve Dallas book, start here. With exceptional characters, and a riveting murder mystery that unearths the dark depths of the city, this is J.D. Robb at her very best.
