Be Your Own Superhero: Read Our Review of Super Duper by Dan Marshall

If you could choose any superpower, what would it be? What if you could shoot glitter from your fingers or camouflage yourself? Would you rather have the power to cough up candy or to grow vegetables to feed the world?

Join super-duper superhero Cooper as she travels the world and meets heroes just like you and me! The sky’s the limit with imagination – what will you do with yours?

Marshall’s first book, Mind Blown, was born from his passion for graphic design, communicating information visually and his deep curiosity for the incredibly strange place that is our universe. It is clear that these same passions are imbued in his other books, Look Book, No Way! and now, Super Duper.

Perfect for children aged 3+, each page brims with bursts of colour, rhymes and encouraging aspirations. Marshall’s talents shine through in Super Duper, alternating between simple and eccentric illustrations to complement each hero’s superpower.

Super Duper is a picture book that encourages young readers to imagine a world where they can be their own superhero. Super-duper Cooper kicks off the epic journey with her lasering, flying and running abilities, as well as super-strength! She then goes on to meet a fantastic selection of superheroes with their own unique abilities.

After all the fun of Superhero Tom coughing up candy, and drawings becoming real with Superhero Drew, the book takes a sweet and impactful turn, showing us that while it’s cool to use our powers for fun, we can also use them to help everyone! From building homes and growing crops to ridding oceans of discarded plastic and ice powers that help cool down global warming. Ultimately, though, the greatest power we all collectively share is our imagination which helps us to create and enact change.

Many of the superheroes we meet in Super Duper are based on responses from real children answering the question: If you could have any superpower, what would you choose? My answer would be to have unlimited access to living essentials. Maybe my ability combined with Hope’s power to build someone a house in less than an hour could help end poverty and homelessness – that’s what teamwork is all about, right? Now, I turn the question to you: what would you choose?
