Twelve-year-old Alice England is curious, truthful and smart, but when you work in your father’s funeral home and you get messages from the dead, it can be difficult to make friends.
When she comes across the peculiar case of George Devenish, who was allergic to sunlight, Alice is convinced there’s more to his death than meets the eye.
With the help of George’s niece, ‘Violet the Vampire’, who shares her uncle’s allergy, and a boy named Cal, who has secrets of his own, Alice begins to investigate. Who were the teenagers under the dock when George died? How is the sinister Doctor Grampian involved? And what about George’s wife, Helen, whose baking is delicious but possibly poisonous?
It seems the truth of George’s death may never see the light of day – unless Alice and her companions can put the clues together and solve a mystery much bigger than anybody expected.

This is a wonderful book, full of plot-twisting events along with everyday drama too. The story hooks you right from the start by using a funeral home for the setting and including the unusual element of sunlight allergies. I have recently been reading A Series of Unfortunate Events so I was excited to read the deadly daylight, because it’s also a spooky mystery. I also love anything with vampires in it, so I really enjoyed how she was being allergic to sunlight. Although that wouldn’t be fun haha. I’m looking forward to reading the next book from Ash Harrier! Sammy, aged 10, 5 stars

I was curious about this book from the very first page and I didn’t put it down. I read it all in only a few days! There are lots of twists and revealing moments but I won’t give any spoilers. If you’re around my age (10) then you HAVE to get this book and see what I’m talking about. Cal was the character I liked most but I liked how him, Violet and Alice work together to solve the spooky mystery. The end seems like there might be a second book and I hope there is Cameron, aged 10, 5 stars
