As the daughter of a London crime boss, Police Constable Philomena McCarthy walks a thin blue line, keeping the two sides of her complicated life apart.
On patrol one night, she discovers a child in pyjamas, wandering alone. Taking Daisy home, Phil uncovers the aftermath of a deadly home invasion, as three miles away, a prominent jeweller is found strapped to an explosive in his ransacked store.
The crimes are linked, and all the evidence points to Phil’s father as the mastermind.
Phil’s two worlds are colliding, trapping her in the middle of a vicious gang war that will threaten her career and everyone she loves.
Who can she trust – the badge or her own blood?
Michael Robotham is an internationally bestselling author whose titles include such hits as The Secrets She Keeps, The Suspect and Good Girl, Bad Girl. His books have sold more than 6 million copies, and his many loyal fans include other big-name authors like Stephen King who said: “I always have a huge stack of books to read, but a Michael Robotham novel automatically goes to the top of the pile.” The White Crow is the second book in his Philomena McCarthy series, following on from the internationally bestselling When You Are Mine.
While I recommend reading When You Are Mine first, for the full experience, when you start reading The White Crow, you’ll feel as though you know exactly what is going on as soon as you start reading Robotham’s latest crime epic. The writing is buttery smooth, captivating, and sets a clear picture in my mind. Being the prolific he is, Robotham has mastered the art of pacing and atmosphere. This book moved fast – intensely fast – and the vibe is so dark. I had chills!
Like many of Robotham’s main characters, Phil is complex and super interesting the minute you start reading. She’s trapped between two very distinct and dissimilar lives – each of that are both alluring and fun to explore as the story progresses. Robotham expertly weaves the criminal side of Phil’s life with her police work. And the twists! They made my bones shake!
If you’ve never read a Michael Robotham book before, I can assure you, he’s the best at writing atmosphere. And this series is a great place to start. There’s something so enchanting about the world he has crafted as Phil slowly unravels one of the most memorable mysteries in recent memory. The words feel uneasy, and like Phil, we, as the reader, don’t know who to trust. The lies, when they’re revealed, hit hard! And when you reach the book’s second half, everything takes a tense turn. My heart was racing. Robotham has done it again with The White Crow.
