Your Preview Verdict: The Road Trip by Tricia Stringer

Sharyn Tregonning wanted a holiday somewhere glamorous for her 60th birthday. So when her husband Barry surprises her with a caravan trip from Adelaide to Broome, she is furious – and bitterly disappointed. Even worse, Barry’s annoying friend Ray and Ray’s reclusive frumpy sister Kathleen are coming along.

It’s true that Kathleen Allenby has become a recluse. As the end-of-life carer for three family members (and at war with her mean neighbours) she has become anxious. She doesn’t expect this trip to offer her much. Sharyn has always looked down on her, and Kathleen has never liked her (or her bitchy friends).

But as a series of mishaps and accidents, overflowing toilets and destination disagreements test boundaries and fray tempers, the two women share a bottle of gin and begin to bond over the highs and lows of caravan life and their irritation with their menfolk as they travel through the magnificent Kimberley towards magical Broome. When a body surfaces at a luxe resort, it brings their grudges and hurts out into the open, and the women realise that it’s not just the men’s future – or behaviour – that needs to change.

The Road Trip was a very entertaining read, which made me laugh out loud at times. The character development, with the backdrop of the Australian outback and their caravanning escapades, added great texture to the story. This book is a great beach/summer/holiday read. Highly recommend. Chrissie, WA, 5 stars

This was such a joy to read! I am not a caravan girlie but this has made me want to sell up, get a van and go! I absolutely loved the journey through Australia and found myself so invested in the characters. Ray, Kathleen, Barry and Sharyn were brilliant, each with their quirks and annoyances but the peripheral characters were stellar. Emma, NSW, 5 stars

This was not the first book of Tricia Stringers that I have read and it wont be the last. I really enjoyed reading ‘The Road Trip” and it was made all the more funny for me because I have friends named Barry and Sharyn who have a caravan and they also have it sign painted with Baz and Shaz. The mishaps were funny but I loved how in the end everyone kinda fell in love with the caravan life. This is something I would love to do one day and wouldn’t mind following in their footsteps as the trip sounds awesome. I delighted in Kathleen finding her feet and being able to stand up to her brother. I think this story shows us how we are all different and sometimes we just need to have a little more tolerance and to take the time to really get to know people. Sharyn and Kathleens friendship was lovely and as Sharyn found out it was a more real friendship than her two faced gossip group. This is a great read for a lazy weekend and would make a great Christmas gift for anyone that loves to read. Annamaree, QLD, 5 stars

The Road Trip by Tricia Stringer has all the ingredients for the perfect recipe – family relationships, a touch of romance, a splash of intrigue and many emotions and reactions. Barry surprises his wife Sharyn with a new caravan and 4WD for her 60th birthday when she was hoping for an overseas holiday. When they get on the road Barry’s mate Ray appears to be joining them with his socially awkward sister Kathleen. They are headed from Adelaide to Broome with little to no experience between them. This is a trip where anything can and does happen. They meet a lot of people and have many different encounters, and learn and grow themselves. The people in their lives and those they meet all come alive in this book and I wonder how I’d deal with panicky Beryl or Kathleen’s frustrating neighbours. In Australia the landscape is constantly changing and with Tricia’s writing I felt I was along for the ride seeing things the way they do and going through some of the situations from reversing the van into tight spots to the uncomfortable conversations and lack of privacy. I felt I was on the trip too experiencing so much without leaving home. Tricia really takes us along for the ride and teaches us about our wonderful country and lessons about ourselves. Another wonderful read that is a firm favourite. Tara, SA, 5 stars

The Road Trip by Tricia Stringer is a fun and engaging novel about a caravanning holiday. If it can go wrong, it does and it’s the ups and downs of the story that keep it flowing so well. The main characters were easy to get to know, commiserate and laugh with. During the trip, the real personalities, flaws and all, came out which led to some very amusing incidents at times, at others, heartfelt empathy. The author’s understanding of so many personality traits made the characters real, not just names on a page. This book should be offered to first time caravaners as a lesson in what not to do, as well as how to make the kilometres pass smoothly. Jodie, WA, 5 stars

On the brink of retirement myself, I was looking forward to this novel, and it did not disappoint. I found it to be relatable, extremely relatable for a person of my age and quite amusing, having seen similar adventures on You Tube. Sharyn’s idea of camping is a 5 star hotel, as is mine. The style of road trip was all organised by Barry, because that’s what he thought was a great idea. I don’t know how I would have felt about my husband spending all that money without telling me though. I thought Sharyn was quite restrained! However, the best bit was the overall story line of compromise and the melding of these four unlikely characters. Barry and Sharyn needed to reconnect and get used to being empty nesters, and being alone with each other. Barry’s best friend Ray had wanted to do the trip with his late wife, but they never got the chance so he brings his unsociable sister Kathleen. The friendships formed by the various mishaps were a joy to watch and develop and gave the tale real depth. I loved it and would highly recommend as your next holiday must read. Bring on a sequel! Kathy, VIC, 5 stars

From the start of this book, right through to the end, I was hooked. Sharyn was hoping for a dream holiday, for her 60th birthday, maybe on a tropical island or somewhere overseas. Little did she know what had been planned for her by Barry, her husband, and his best mate Ray along with their two sons. She wasn’t aware Barry had purchased a caravan for them to travel around Australia. What a journey this holiday turned out to be. I loved all the characters in the book. Especially Sharyn and Kathleen whose friendship grew as their trip went along. I enjoyed following their long journey, through the Australian outback, from Adelaide to Broome. Barry kept a running total of the number of kilometres they had travelled each day. There was even a map to follow, which was a nice touch. The story has many themes including, friendships old and new, surprises good and bad, secrets, lies, adventures, new romances and many mishaps. This book was very entertaining, it made me laugh out loud and was highly descriptive. I felt as though I was travelling along on their journey with them and experiencing all they went through. Gillian, SA, 5 stars

What a coincidence. My name is Sharon and I’m turning 60 near the end of this year and would love a surprise holiday, and have even checked out caravans and 4 wheel drives to tow it to travel around Australia. This book really resonated with me. Creating new friendships after retiring, letting go of old ones, ones that no longer bring me joy. It was interesting reading the journey in print. A couple that had never caravaned, a Husband that is horrible with surprises (apparently), a group of friends that we think we can’t do without, when in actuality, none of what we currently have, is what we need. A rebuild of a marriage, letting go of friendships that are too hard, making new friendships that are just easy and realising that life really is fun, even if we don’t understand the hand signals for reversing and parking a caravan. What a wonderful road trip. Tricia Stringer captured it perfectly and added a twist to make it more interesting. Loved it. Sharon, QLD, 5 stars

I really enjoyed this book! It was such a pleasure to travel alongside Sharon and Barry – married for 35 years, and Raymond and Kathleen, siblings with a significant age gap, as they journeyed from Adelaide to Broome. The story beautifully captured the dynamics between the characters, from long-term marriage quirks to sibling complexities, all against the backdrop of an adventurous road trip. There were plenty of laugh-out-loud moments, and just when you thought things couldn’t go more off-track, they did! It’s a heart-warming, often hilarious story about relationships, resilience, and the unpredictability of caravan travel. I highly recommend this book. It’s like taking a memorable road trip without having to leave the comfort of your armchair. Fran, NSW, 5 stars

The road trip By Tricia Stringer is a charming & engaging novel about the unexpected journeys we take with those around us, and also those journeys within ourselves. Set against the sweeping backdrop of the Australian landscape, it blends humour, self-discovery, and a hint of mystery into an unforgettable story All Sharyn Tregonning wants for her 60th birthday is something glamorous. Instead, her hubby Barry plans a holiday – in a caravan no less – from Adelaide to Broome. If that alone wasn’t bad enough, Barrys friend Ray and his introverted sister Kathleen are coming along too! Tension builds right from the start—Sharyn feels let down and irritated with the whole situation, while Kathleen is nervous and unsure. What starts as a trip no one’s really excited about soon becomes a journey that challenges relationships, digs up old grudges, and reveals feelings everyone’s been hiding The story really nails the characters. Although Sharyn and Kathleen start off with friction and differences, they slowly begin to connect and understand each other. Their tension feels authentic, and Stringer allows both women to evolve naturally. At the same time, Barry and Ray bring extra layers to the story—sometimes lightening the mood with humour—without taking away from the main emotional journey. One of the things I really love about Tricia Stringer writing, is the way she describes the places and the landscapes. The wide-open spaces, the feeling of being out in the middle of nowhere, and the heat all add to the vibe and tension. It really shows how the setting can be just as important as the characters in a good travel story. I absolutely loved this story—Tricia has an incredible gift for pulling you into the world of her characters, making you feel every emotion and every step of their journey as if you were right there beside them. It honestly made me want to just jump in a van and hit the road for an adventure of my own! Kelly, SA, 5 stars

All Sharon wants for her 60th birthday is a glamorous holiday with her husband and her friends. So when her husband Barry surprises her with a caravan trip from Adelaide to Broome, she is less than impressed. To make it worse, Barry’s friend Ray and his reclusive sister Kathleen are coming along much to Sharon’s surprise. As a series of mishaps and accidents occur, the group grows closer and attitudes start to shift and change. This was a laugh out loud story of the eventful challenges that can occur on a road and between a group travelling in close quarters together. I loved the vivid detail of the caravan trip, not just the beautiful destinations but the toilet and washing mishaps along with the everyday life as a caravaner. This book made me want to jump in a van and travel across Australia, definitely adding a few places to my travel bucket list! The destinations were beautifully written and I loved the group dynamic and the growth of the characters throughout the book. Liat, NSW, 5 stars

I’ve come to expect nothing but a fantastic read from Tricia Stringer and this book certainly didn’t disappoint! Likeable characters, beautiful Australian scenery with a little twist to keep you reading late into the night. This is a wonderful story that encourages empathy, compassion and friendship. Another brilliant book by Tricia Stringer! Kate, TAS, 5 stars

I felt Sharyn’s pain at the prospect of holidaying in a caravan and sharing her 60th birthday with 3 other travellers. Great read, had me hooked from the very first page. The story and characters were engaging and I loved the ending. Terrific read. Graciela, NSW, 5 stars

I loved this book, it had me hooked from the word go, and the great cover had me turning the pages, it had a little bit of everything, romance, mystery and a whole lot of fun, I felt like I was traveling alone with them, now this trip is on my bucket list, do yourself a favour start reading this book. Karen, SA, 5 stars

As Sharyn approaches her 60th birthday, she is hoping her husband will surprise her with a luxurious overseas trip to somewhere warm. Instead, Barry surprises her by buying a caravan and organising a road trip from Adelaide to Broome. Sharyn is fuming, and to make matters worse, Barry has invited his annoying friend Ray and Ray’s reclusive sister Kathleen to join them on their trip. With already strained relationships, what could go wrong. As a van voyager myself, what follows is a delightfully relatable tale of chaos, friendships, and beautiful descriptions of the Australian outback. While the storyline at times follows a fairly predictable path, this is part of its charm, making it a light, an enjoyable read. A perfect escape read that reminds us sometimes the best journeys are the ones we did not plan. Highly recommended. Michelle, SA, 5 stars

I didn’t want it to end! Yet again Tricia Stringer weaves a story that gets you so enmeshed that you just want it to keep going (sequel anyone??). Such a great description of the scenery and the trip that you almost feel like you’re alongside them on their journey and it wouldn’t be a Tricia novel without a couple of twists and turns along the way to keep you on your toes. Really enjoyed this one and would read it again and recommend it to anyone who loves just a great easy read. Tracy, WA, 5 stars

Do yourself a favour and read The Road Trip by Tricia Stringer. On this caravan journey from Adelaide to Broome you never know what’s around the corner, who you’re going to meet or what you’ll find. Two caravans, four travellers. A 60th celebration but nothing like Sharon imagined, husband Barry keeping secrets with friend Ray who’s taken his unsociable sister, Kathleen on the journey to take her out of her comfort zone. Anything that can go wrong will go wrong ! A delightful story that took me along in this adventure. 5 stars for this wonderful page turner. Marice, NSW, 5 stars

Such a thoroughly enjoyable book. I really felt like I was along for the journey and found all the characters believable and very much relatable. Living in such close proximity to one’s travelling buddies for even a small amount of time certainly brings out the best and worst in Shaz, Baz, Ray and Kathleen and it was fascinating watching them morph throughout the trip from camping newbies to seasoned caravanners. And if you happen to be on a very similar holiday, staying at the same places while reading this book as I was, it’s quite a surreal experience. Do yourself a favour and have a read, I can’t recommend this book enough. Deanne, VIC, 5 stars

Loved, loved, LOVED this book! As someone who was brought up by caravan fanatic parents, and who spent virtually every weekend and all holidays in them from the age of three until my mid-twenties, I was excited to read this novel, kindly sent to me by Better Reading. Sharyn’s husband, Barry, thought that it would be a wonderful surprise to take her on a road trip in a newly purchased second-hand caravan to celebrate her 60th birthday and their 35th wedding anniversary. Unfortunately, Sharyn had been dreaming of a glamorous overseas holiday about which she could boast to her friends, not caravanning from Adelaide to Broome with zero prior experience so this was most certainly not a wonderful surprise. It was sheer horror. Worse still, Barry’s irritating friend, Ray, and Ray’s reclusive, boring sister accompany them in Ray’s caravan. The trip is full of hysterically funny disasters, some compelling and worrying suspense, plus surprises and all the characters develop in marvellous and pleasing ways (as one should on a mammoth road trip!). Totally enthralling and entertaining, I promise you will be captivated from page one. I wholeheartedly recommend this fabulous book from an Australian author who never disappoints. Pamela, VIC, 5 stars

The Road Trip was a great novel by Tricia Stringer. I couldn’t put the book down as I was eager to find out what would happen next on the caravan journey across Australia. The whole adventure was intriguing from friendships old and new, secrets, gender roles and living in caravans! I am looking forward to reading the next book by Tricia. Christine, WA, 5 stars

Sharyn Tregonning is looking forward to an overseas holiday for her 60th Birthday and 35th Wedding Anniversary. After an afternoon of champagne with her friends, her husband Barry picks her up to announce that he has a surprise waiting at home. Sharyn is mortified when she sees a caravan in the driveway and to make her even more unhappy, Barry bought a 4wd as well. Barry has it all planned they leave from Adelaide and head to Broome. To make matters worse, Sharyn finds out on their very first night at a free camp that they will be travelling with Ray, Barry’s friend and his reclusive sister Kathleen. “In the cubby house on wheels” I truly loved this book. With on the road drama, from fridges that haven’t been lock whilst travelling to overflowing toilets. Tricia’s descriptions of our beautiful country, made it all seem real. From learning laundry rules, setting up caravans, the death stare reverse parking arguments. This book had me laughing. As Sharyn adjusts to caravan life I found myself smiling as I’ve been there. I highly recommend this book. Lorraine, NSW, 5 stars

Another fantastic read by Tricia Stringer. The Road Trip is a brilliant Aussie read about caravanning across Australia, as newbies . I could thoroughly relate to the storyline (having been new to caravanning myself). Breakdowns, making new friendships, hard times, caravan park etiquette, arguments and the all important question What’s for Dinner”. I loved all the characters, but felt empathy for Kathleen, who got her happy ending. So get out there and buy this great book and support an amazing Aussie Author. Heather, VIC, 5 stars

The Road Trip is yet another stunner from Tricia Stringer. Tricia has a wonderful talent for exploring the complexities of the relationships we have with partners, family and friends. While travelling through the stunning interior of Australia with caravan in tow we come to know Barry and Sharyn the reluctant traveller. Sharyn had other ideas on how to celebrate their wedding anniversary and a milestone birthday for her. Barry however planned the trip without consulting her and we delve into how this action effects their relationship and how they overcome the resentments in such close confines. We also meet Ray, still finding his feet after the loss of his wife. Ray is also keeping secrets, ones that lead to misunderstandings and mistrust. He is travelling with his sister Kathleen, who has led a restricted life and spent much of it giving to other people. She has spent many years as a carer to several family members and is now lost and completely spent. The trip gives her time to heal, find herself, her voice and maybe even some love along the way. Join them all as they learn to communicate better, that friends come in many forms and may not be what you thought and that we are all stronger than we think . Kathy, QLD, 5 stars

Who wouldn’t love a story about traveling in a caravan travelling around Australia. It was like being there myself. Barry and Sharon and Ray and Kathleen, what could go wrong. Do the two females get on together, you will have to read this book to see. Couldn’t put it down. Throw a dead body in and this book becomes a best seller. Karem, QLD, 5 stars

Sharyn is turning 60 and her friends have come together to celebrate and wanting to know the big surprise Barry has at home for her. But Sharyn is not expecting what Barry has in store for her. Bewilderment, shock, angst against Barry’s surprise. She is not going to be a grey nomad. But she capitulates there is more in store for her, they start as 2 on the journey and it turns to 4 at the first night. Friend Ray and his sister Kathleen (begrudgingly) are along for the ride. “A trip of a Lifetime “or is it. Has Sharyn exchanged the four walls of home for a caravan or is it an awakening of herself. Does she form a new friendship or alliance with Kathleen due private male business between Barry and Ray. Tricia Stringer has you encapsulated wanting to know the next instalment from the very beginning. Her writing style is easy and weaves her characters together with uncomplicated narrative. Central and north west Western Australia here you go! Maree, VIC, 5 stars

The Road Trip is a well-written, enjoyable narrative that takes the reader into the heart of Australia as well as the hearts of the four key characters. It explores friendships and family bonds as well as memories and unexplored hurts that occur when families begin to fracture. The perfectly created characters epitomise beautifully the highs and lows that can occur when one explores the dubious joys of holiday life in a caravan as well as the frustrations and heartbreak when connections to loved ones drift apart. Set to a backdrop of stunning locations from Adelaide to Broome, the journey is not easy with many challenges but the rewards are high. I thoroughly enjoyed taking this trip with each character and found myself laughing out loud whilst, at other times, thinking ‘I feel your pain!’ By the end of the story you will want everyone to be the hero of their own story. If you have ever travelled in a caravan or contemplated a trip in one, this book is for you – Tricia Stringer leaves no stone unturned. Highly recommend you join them and take this journey of a lifetime. Louise, QLD, 5 stars

Comfort reading at its best, which is expected from Tricia Stringer. who never disappoints me. The four main characters are poles apart in personality and you can identify with all of them as they come to life. Sharyn, 60 city girl loves her girl friends and long lunches. Barry her devoted husband, buy a caravan with his inheritance, and without telling his wife. Her choice of holiday is so far from his there wont be a good outcome when she finds out. Ray is his best friend and they go way back. His wife was Sharyns best friend before cancer took her from them. Ray already has a caravan. Kathleen is Rays sister and for the past three years has given palliative care to both her sister in law and grumpy bad tempered father. Kathern is convinced she needs a break from her abusive neighbours and years of being an unpaid nurse. The writing is clever and so real l felt l was in their trip from Adelaide to Broome, in all 6 weeks of it. This story is true to real life and the reader will decide if a caravan trip will be for them. Yvonne, NSW, 5 stars

She’s done it again! ‘The Road Trip’ is yet another outstanding novel from Tricia Stringer bringing together a fabulous storyline and relatable characters, creating a reading experience that’s difficult to beat. The caravanning mishaps along the way (and they way they’re dealt with!) are so true to life and had me grinning and grimacing throughout. Her characters are so well described to us that I almost felt like I was forming opinions – good and bad – about real people. The plot itself is a wonderful tale of the highs and lows of both travelling in a caravan, and travelling as a group, and the added storylines of the individual characters added another depth of interest and emotion. I absolutely loved this novel and found it hard to put down until the last page was read. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to upgrade my caravan and heading on a road trip! Sally, SA, 5 stars

This story is engaging, relatable, and often laugh-out-loud funny. Following four travellers in two caravans as they journey from Adelaide to Broome, it captures the joy of new beginnings, the bonds of unexpected friendships, and the intrigue of secrets coming to light. Beautifully written and full of heart, it’s a book that entertains while also leaving you with plenty to think about. I’d highly recommend it to anyone looking for a heartfelt, inspiring, and thoroughly enjoyable read. Rachael, TAS, 5 stars

Gosh I love Tricia Stringer’s books… and this one was no exception. Her style is so engaging. So incredibly hard to put down. I love the characters and it is such a satisfying story and ending. I HIGHLY recommend. Nicole, QLD, 5 stars

Great book, love this author. What a story, loved the road trip element of it Jessica, NSW, 5 stars

A 60th birthday surprise and a trip of a life time or so Sharyn thought. What she hoped for was a trip to Paris, what she got was a surprise trip from her husband Barry to Broome in a caravan. Worst part Barry invites his annoying friend Ray and his quiet sister Kathleen. Barry has no idea what he is doing causing a lot of tension between them not to mention the drama along the way. Meeting Ray and Kathleen at their first stop didn’t go so well, but over time and a few cocktails the girls shared an amazing bond between them. Weeks pass and thousands of kilometres traveled Sharyn finally starts to relax taking in the breathtaking scenery and enjoying company of the amazing people they meet along the way. A beautifully written story of travel, journey and true friendships. A great read. Natalie, VIC, 5 stars

I loved this book. I felt like I was on the caravan trip with the four of them. I could relate to their caravan trip to Broome. I laughed at times about Sharyn and Kathleen and what everyone got up to. Loved the story of Kathleen and Omar. It was a trip to remember for all of them. I couldn’t put this book down, I didn’t want it to end. A great book and I will definitely reading more of Tricia Stringers books to read. Tori, QLD, 5 stars

Legendary author and contemporary fiction extraordinaire, Tricia Stringer is about to release her next first rate novel. The Road Trip is a heavenly read and tells the journey of four people as they travel from Adelaide to Broome in two caravans. Sharyn is hoping for a luxurious holiday celebration for her milestone 60th birthday. But then her husband Barry surprises her with a caravan trip and Sharyn is disgruntled. What’s even more annoying is he asked his aggravating best friend Ray and his quiet sister Kathleen. What’s starts off as the vacation from hell soon becomes an adventure and bonds are formed over a cocktail or two. With misfortunes, adversity and calamity and even a murder, the foursome learn more than they bargained for. As one of this country’s finest storytellers, Tricia is once again delivering a captivating read bursting with entertainment. An awesome plot, mature characters as leads, some humour, a jolt or two along the way and a Aussie landscape as the backdrop. Grab a copy on release date, relax and enjoy. Craig, VIC, 5 stars

I loved loved loved this book! Being a reluctant camper/caravaner myself, I totally related to all the mishaps and frustrations that the female characters were experiencing. Themes of evolving friendships with a side of humour kept me absolutely hooked. I really did feel like I was there on this adventure with them at every scenic outback location. This story teaches you the lesson that sometimes the journey you take holds life richest lessons and you don’t always end up at the destination you expected. Definitely five stars from me!! Justine, NSW, 5 stars

Tricia Stringer has a real gift for creating relatable, lovable characters and I thoroughly enjoyed following their journeys—both literal and emotional—throughout the book. The mix of personalities kept things interesting and I found myself laughing out loud at times—especially during the caravan parking scenes, which hit close to home! Having been in that situation myself more than once, it was hilariously familiar. Beyond the humour, there’s a lot of heart in this story. It’s full of secrets, surprises and emotional moments that deepen the connections between characters. I also appreciated learning more about the beauty of Australia along the way—it added a wonderful layer to the story. The Road Trip is a warm, heartfelt read that celebrates friendship, personal growth and life’s unexpected twists. I loved the friendships that formed throughout and I didn’t want it to end. Highly recommend to anyone after a feel-good, relatable read. Hannelie, WA, 5 stars

I have read a number of Tricia Stringer books and enjoyed them and this one was no exception. A story of two couples (one married and a widowed brother with his single sister), embark on a caravan trip through South Australia and the Northern Territory to Broome. There are trials and tribulations along the way but I loved the friendship which developed between the two female characters Sharyn and Kathleen as they travelled. Particularly as Sharyn did not think much of Kathleen before the trip but formed a bond through various circumstances. Sharyn also began to realise the women she thought were her friends back home were perhaps not as wonderful as she thought. Jill, NSW, 5 stars

The Road Trip, Tricia Stringer is a truly delightful novel set around caravan travel through the center of Australia, with friends. Tricia certainly covers off on many of the challenges this type of travel brings. Full of unlikely friendships, drama, and so much heartwarmth. I loved Shaz and Baz, a very relatable married couple. Ray and Kathleen are also typical siblings. The way Tricia researched places and attractions was very well executed. I was able to picture myself there, but also remember sights from my own travels. Another wonderful Australian novel that I devoured in two sittings. Tricia hits the mark yet again! Rebecca, TAS, 5 stars

I loved this book .. well written, descriptive and a wonderful story woven around friends and family with all the emotions and trials that go with it. Being set on a caravanning road trip in Australia, was interesting and entertaining. Leonie, SA, 5 stars

As a fan of Tricia Stringer’s previous books, I had high hopes for The Road Trip and it didn’t disappoint. Although the story started off a little slowly, it quickly found its rhythm and delivered everything I was hoping for. There were plenty of laugh-out-loud and relatable moments, particularly Sharyn’s hesitation about caravanning when she’d been dreaming of a luxury overseas getaway (I could completely relate!) The characters evolved beautifully as the story unfolded, and the entire journey was captured with warmth and vivid detail. A thoroughly enjoyable and heartwarming read Susan, NSW, 5 stars

“The Road Trip” by Tricia Stringer is a relatable and funny novel about travel, friendships and relationships. I couldn’t put it down. I loved witnessing Sharyn and Kathleen’s growth throughout the novel and empathised with them both. After reading about all the beautiful Australian destinations they visited on their journey, I’m more than a bit tempted to arrange my own caravan holiday! Janelle, VIC, 5 stars

What an excellent book this was. Such a true to life story of a couple who head out from Adelaide to Broome with a caravan hooked up. Sharyn thought she was going to a romantic tropical island for a significant birthday, but her husband brought home a caravan. She is not happy, and he tells her they are also travelling with his friend and sister. The challenges they come across, the people they meet all added up to a funny, and page turning novel. This should be compulsory reading for anyone thinking about doing the same. I love her books, and this one is her best yet! Janine, VIC, 5 stars

I loved this book and read it quickly. I really felt like I was on this caravan journey with them. Hard to put down. Very relatable with the couples travelling together visiting the NT, I had been to the same places myself. Relatable relationships issues along the way, I highly recommend this book, great scenic descriptive locations, it will resonate well with everyone. Julie, NSW, 5 stars

Tricia Stringer has outdone herself with this latest book. A brother and sister in one caravan, a married couple in another caravan, travelling together on their first holiday in a van. Lots of mishaps and misunderstandings and throw in uncertainties about relationships. Who can trust who and a forging of unexpected friendships. Well written and a thoroughly enjoyable read. Noelle, WA, 5 stars

Tricia Stringer has managed to combine a 60th birthday , a caravanning holiday up the center of Australia and a mix of events into this most delightful book. What started out as disappointment turned into the best holiday and birthday celebration any of one could have imagined. Once everyone started to relax good times was had by all between meeting new friends and loves, a beautiful story about being out of your comfort zone. Sally, VIC, 5 stars

When four adults, a brother and sister and one married couple, with two caravans, set off on an Aussie road trip, you know it will be fun. The fact that none is experienced means something is sure to go wrong and it does. Anyone who has ever been caravanning will love this light read. Those who have not tried caravanning may well want to give it a go. It may not be the way you want to celebrate turning 60, but then neither did Sharon. With a series of mishaps, a lot of alcohol and a few dummy spits, these four begin to understand each other better and as they head north both the weather and their friendships warm. Then there’s the body in the water…. I loved this romp through the pages of Stringer’s book. I hope you do too. Liesl, NSW, 5 stars

This is one of the best books I have read this year. I felt as though I was on the road trip and visiting all those places they stopped at. I loved the way the characters evolved. Kathleen going from a timid mousey person to a very confident person and able to hold her own. Sharyn was overly full of herself and what she wanted and with time to reflect she lowered her expectations and became a much nicer person. Ray learned that he couldn’t always control the current situation. Tricia is a brilliant author whose stories we can all identify with and I would recommend this book to everyone. Karen Neil, VIC, 5 stars

I loved the theme of the book, it was an adventure that was exciting and challenging at for the characters. I really loved Sharyn and Kathleen, the friendship they developed was built on challenge, understanding but most of all respect and honesty. I absolutely couldn’t put this book down. I love Tricia Stringers writing – always an engaging storyline. Congratulations Trica! Look forward to more books and adventures. Anne, QLD, 5 stars

I loved the road trip , couldn’t put it down. Tricia Stringer draws you in from page one, I loved the characters love how they are different ages their different personalities travelling together, would highly recommend this book. Helen, VIC, 5 stars

Another great read from this favourite Aussie author. I gobbled it up in two days but wished it would not end. The Road Trip follows the route I have done in a caravan over a 6 month timeframe and it brought back so many good memories. Starring characters with whom you can empathise, this is a feelgood, light, easy read.  Jan, SA, 5 stars

It is always a good book when I find myself promising to read just one more chapter .This is a fun book to read, even though I have never been on a caravan holiday. The characters were very relatable, with just a hint of romance and mystery included. The book must have been very well researched, as it was so easy to picture the locations. Once again Tricia Stringer was delivered a very readable book. Barb, SA, 5 stars

This was my first Tricia Stringer book and won’t be my last! I love reading books set in Australia, especially Adelaide! This book did not disappoint, I was hooked from page 1 and couldn’t stop reading! Tricia’s passion for writing literally jumps out of every page. The characters were a hoot, such an enjoyable journey. I highly recommend reading this. Kellie, NSW, 5 stars

Australian author Tricia Stringer has written a very Aussie tale about a ‘slow travel’ and caravanning crew who are traversing through the magnificent Kimberley on the way to magical Broome, Western Australia. Many things that could go wrong, do go wrong…And when a dead body surfaces at a luxe resort, the women realise things need to change for the better. Tricia is the voice of Australian storytelling with real and authentic people and places. This is a moving and feel good read about friendships, heartbreak and second chances. Preeya, QLD, 5 stars

I’ve read all Tricia’s books & this one certainly didn’t disappoint, it had me hooked from the first page, it was so good when I received it in the morning & started reading it, I couldn’t put it down & finished it that night. Great characters, & I’m sure lots of research done by Tricia in her travels. I could picture all the different scenarios, lots of laughs, from free camping to caravan parks, all the different personalities, it’s very hard travelling with others & making sure everyone is happy. It was certainly a different ending to what I was expecting, well done Tricia an excellent storyline once again. Betty, NSW, 5 stars

Like all of Tricia’s books before, I started The Road Trip and was straight away hooked! Her writing is easy to read and you quickly become invested in the characters. I really enjoyed following the caravan life (not something I’ve done but feeling like I might now like to try, despite their hiccups!). The descriptions bought the travel and different locations to life. This is a comfortable, easy, enjoyable read – I loved it!! Melissa, SA, 4 stars

First time Tricia Stringer reader and caravanning virgin….? This will be the book I press into any hands of friends who announce a caravan holiday! It hasn’t completely put me off this type of holidaying, although I will always make reference to it! I was cringing on the inside for Sharyn who had high hopes of her husband, Barry, to make good on 60th birthday plans with a luxurious tropical holiday or overseas destination. This buildup in the story had me laughing-out-loud! I loved the characters, an unlikely bunch to venture out on a long distance trip, and many hiccups along the way that would have frayed anyone’s nerves. Tricia Stringed has weaved a beautiful story of friendship and loyalty, with an element of mystery thrown in! I absolutely loved this story, a book that will make you feel like taking a road trip – but be careful who you take. Julie, VIC, 4 stars

I really enjoyed his book. It kept me thoroughly engrossed. Christine, QLD, 4 stars

Sharyn wanted a holiday to somewhere exotic for her 60th birthday but her husband Barry has a different idea and he buys a caravan and 4WD and presents it to Sharyn as the only option she is going to get. They set off from Adelaide to Broome with Barry’s mate Raymond and his sister Kathleen. Sharyn is highly disappointed and disillusioned, but as they all get into the swing of caravanning strangers become friends. Tensions rise and disagreements erupt but there are plenty of surprises in store. An enjoyable read with a few twists along the way. Karan, VIC, 4 stars

A mix of adventure, (varying) relationships and romance mixed with a little humour. I was looking forward to reading about the landscape and scenic highlights of the Outback and yes there was some of that, and a whole lot of drama. Two couples are travelling togerther in two caravans – a married couple in one van and (two) siblings in the other. The guys were keen on the trip and the girls not so much. It was interesting to see the girls bond over the ‘challenges’. Many people are keen to travel Australia in a van – I am not one of those and am even less so after reading The Road Trip. I’d certainly recommend this to those who dream of the big van trip – they may discover some things to take into consideration. And those who are competent van travellers will be nodding their heads about parts of the experience. Kaytee, NSW, 4 stars

This was an easy to read and relatable group of Aussie characters all with their own ideas. They are all experiencing and desiring different things in life. Some not short on expressing their own opinions or at least confiding. At times it’s a book between the mature sexes! How uncouth can men be sometimes! Holidays have two different meanings for men and women. As this story continued it gave a pending doom feeling between the four main people in the book however I felt there would be light at the end of the tunnel. This is an easy and relaxed read and an introduction to caravanning if you’re thinking of venturing out. If you love character books then give it a go. Della, VIC, 4 stars

Two caravans , four people, what could be a better way to spend a holiday? The Road trip is a book about the joys of travelling, and discovering what true friendship and love really is, and finding out what really is important in life. Really enjoyed this book. Litsa, VIC, 4 stars

I really enjoyed this tale of four adults (Sharyn and Barry who are married and Kathleen and her brother Raymond) who journeyed together in two caravans on a road trip from Adelaide up through the Red Centre to Katherine and then across to the Kimberley and into Broome. None of the four were experienced caravaners and as they traveled together relationships became strained and they encountered several mishaps along the way. Barry wanted to organise something special for his wife’s 60th birthday but as Sharyn was thinking more along the lines of an overseas holiday on a tropical island she was not thrilled with Barry’s plan. Nor was she excited at the idea of travelling with Raymond and Kathleen. The two blokes got on well but the women could hardly be called friends. So there was really not a lot to look forward to and it certainly wasn’t shaping up to be the trip of a lifetime. I thought the author gave a realistic account of life on the road. In the small space of a caravan, when tensions arose, the couples couldn’t get away from each other and there was not much privacy in a caravan park. Couple that with the long drives between places and you can see how fraught with problems it could be if the couple are out of sorts with each other. So not surprisingly, challenges and obstacles, as well as misunderstandings, were aplenty for these travellers. As a West Aussie, I loved that a major part of the story was set in the beautiful Kimberley region of WA and I enjoyed the descriptions of the route they took. I felt as though I was journeying along with them and could visualise the towns and barrenness of the remote outback. This was a pleasant, light-hearted gem of a book which I completed in a couple of days. Ruth, WA, 4 stars

Sharyn was hoping her husband Barry was organising an overseas trip to celebrate her 60th birthday; rather he surprised her by buying a 4-wheel drive and caravan to go on a road trip with his friend Raymond and his sister, Kathleen. During the road trip there are lots of funny moments and unforgettable situations, the journey from Adelaide to Broome via the Northern Territory, isn’t without mishap. I enjoyed reading this, a pleasant, light-hearted read. Luciana, WA, 4 stars

Surprise! A caravan roadtrip through central Australia and the Kimberley was far from the 60th birthday holiday Sharyn had been hoping to take with her husband, Barry. For Kathleen, worn down by the grind of caring for family and beset by unpleasant neighbours, tagging along with her brother, Ray, and his friends at least meant a change of scenery. But why the urgency to reach Broome? Why the second phone? Why the secretive transactions? As the four travel on, suspicions grow and the women, reluctant allies at first, forge a new friendship. It took me a while to get into The Road Trip. Sharyn – of the long lunches, manicures, and Girlz Chat – was a recognisable character, but not one I identified with, while introverted Kathleen was far more sympathetic. As the story progressed, both women developed as characters: Sharyn gained new patience and outgrew the superficiality of her friendship group. Kathleen learned to stand up for herself against family and found new love. The prologue shadowed the book, underpinning the growing tensions between brother and sister, husband and wife, until the group reached their destination and everything was revealed. I thought it was done well, adding another layer of complexity to the story. A novel for those seeking characters who grow, and who want to experience Australia’s vast outback (albeit, from the bitumen). Alexina, ACT, 4 stars

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, finishing it in one weekend. A couple of characters I loved and a couple I kept changing my mind about. Nice easy read that kept me turning the pages. Beautiful description of some must visit Australian towns and beaches. Now have the travel bug! Amanda, SA, 4 stars

A great holiday read. Light, engaging, and very relevant to Australian life. Great descriptions of the beautiful Australian outback, and just enough romance to keep it interesting. Ros, ACT, 4 stars

Tricia Stringer is a best-selling, award-winning author and her latest book The road trip about a caravaning holiday to Darwin is an entertaining read. The main characters Barry, Sharyn, Ray and Kathleen all have their own life dramas, insecurities and concerns as they embark on their caravaning adventure. From the start it is obvious that not everyone has been involved in the planning for the trip, and some would prefer not to be going. Barry and Sharyn never having owned a caravan are clueless. The trip is to celebrate a significant anniversary and birthday, but there are cracks in their marriage. Ray and Kathleen are brother and sister, and their relationship is clouded by financial issues and Ray’s over cautious control of Kathleen. As the journey progresses Sharyn and Kathleen form a strong friendship. Sharyn begins to appreciate her family and true friends rather than chasing empty dreams. Kathleen finds the strength to break out of her reclusive life. Stringer provides vivid descriptions of the Australian outback which make you want to take the journey yourself. Her portrayal of the challenges of caravan travel, although light hearted might be too much for some people. Fans of Tricia Stringer’s books will thoroughly enjoy The road trip. Janet, TAS, 4 stars

Tricia Stringer’s latest novel is an enjoyable, easy-to-read story about four people on a road trip from Adelaide to Perth. They are 60-ish husband and wife, Barry and Sharyn, and Barry’s friend Raymond and his sister Kathleen, each with their own stories and troubles, and secrets to be uncovered in the melting-pot atmosphere of first-time caravanners. The characters are relatable, and while some act questionably and are at times unlikeable, particularly Raymond, I was invested in their stories and felt great sympathy for the misunderstood Kathleen who had experienced a lot of recent trauma as the family carer. The unlikely friendship between the two very different women and the camaraderie they develop is a real highlight. Though caravanning is new to me, I thought the author brought to life the realities and troubles of life on the road in a down-to-earth and humorous way. The Road Trip is an engaging read of the dynamics of families and friendships, with romance and humour thrown in, against the unique Australian outback landscape. Sandra, TAS, 4 stars

Sharyn’s husband Barry has planned a caravan trip from Adelaide to Broome to celebrate her 60th birthday. This is not the glamourous island holiday she was hoping for. While Barry thinks it’s going to be the trip of a lifetime, Sharyn is dreading it, and to make matters worse they are travelling with Barry’s friends Ray and Ray’s sister Kathleen. The trip provides challenges and opportunities for growth for all of the characters, with some humorous moments along the way, particularly as Sharyn and Barry are caravanning novices. I enjoyed the descriptions of the natural world and it highlights some extraordinary parts of Australia to visit. The Road Trip is a story that celebrates family relationships, friendships, second chances, living in the moment and taking opportunities when they arise. Holly, WA, 4 stars

I always enjoy Tricia’s books as her characters are so relatable. In this story we are introduced to husband Barry and his wife Sharyn. Sharyn is dreaming of a luxury trip for her 60th birthday and pearl anniversary but to her horror Barry has other plans and without her knowledge has purchased a caravan and four wheel drive and convinces a very reluctant Sharyn to take a road trip from Adelaide to Broome. To Sharyn’s dismay she then discovers that they will be travelling with Barry’s best mate Ray and his reclusive sister Kathleen who also have their own problems. Along the journey the first time caravaners encounter many mishaps and misunderstandings. Anyone who has experienced a caravan trip with family or friends will sympathise and empathise with the characters as Tricia highlights their best and worst behaviours with humour and understanding. Unlikely friendships are formed and the two women bond together when they suspect the men are keeping secrets from them. I throughly enjoyed this book and would highly recommend it. Susan, SA, 4 stars

The Road Trip by Tricia Stringer was such a lovely surprise. I really enjoyed how it brought three women—once close, now estranged—back together for a journey that’s as much about healing as it is about the miles they cover. I loved the way Stringer explored old wounds, unspoken truths, and the complicated nature of friendship. The Australian setting gave the whole story this grounded, expansive feel, like the wide open roads were echoing the space they needed to figure things out. It’s warm, heartfelt, and quietly moving—a perfect read if you like stories about connection and second chances. Rebecca, ACT, 4 stars

What an adventure! This Aussie road trip tale is a gem. I really enjoyed the ride with the beautifully drawn characters. Stringer created lovable and realistic characters with warmth, humour and human foibles everyone can relate to. Her writing style was clear and engaging with lovely descriptive details and depth of emotions. They say a change is a good as a holiday….Stringer proves that holidays, forced or freely take, are necessary for growth- we learn so much about ourselves, others and the world around us. Helen, NSW, 4 stars

The road trip by Tricia Stringer Significant birthdays need to be celebrated! Everyone has differing expectations about “dream destinations”. Sharyn is about to celebrate a birthday and wants to do something special. Will her girlfriends join her in this celebration, or will her husband plan a surprise that will “tick all the boxes”? With some trepidation, a trip has been planned and Sharyn is not all that thrilled about a caravanning holiday with a family friend and his sister. The caravan has been purchased; it certainly sounds like a van with all the modern conveniences. Is Sharyn happy? Not particularly, it doesn’t quite spell out luxury and pure indulgence that her friends have been planning for their own forthcoming birthdays. These themes are well explored and colourful characters are met throughout the journey with stories of their own. This book centres on four characters who all know one another, but how well? Travelling in convoy has its benefits, and there are compromises that need to be made by everyone. Caravanning in Australia is a favoured past time of many avid travellers; it provides the opportunity of impromptu stops and gives the traveller autonomy to explore remote places in this vast country and meet interesting people along the way. The four intrepid travellers found themselves challenged (in a good way) with what can happen on a trip of this nature, with valuable places of interest that pique the interest of future travellers in this area. Sharyn’s perspective of what is important in life is evaluated during her journey from South Australia to Broome. Sometimes it takes time to see that the people closest to you have your best interests at heart. As with other Tricia Stringer books, her main characters are strong women who face adversity in its many forms and evaluate their lives in measured ways that helps the reader understand their own journey. Enjoy “The road trip”, it is a trip to remember! Jo, VIC, 4 stars

The Road Trip seems doomed from the start…As a surprise 60th birthday present for his wife, Sharyn, Barry has splashed out on a new caravan and invited his friend Ray, along with his sister Kathleen, to join them. This is not the glamorous surprise that Sharyn had in mind. How will she ever live this down with her trendy best friends? As the group travel across Australia their relationships are put to the test. As always Stringer perfectly captures the realities of love and friendship and brings the stunning Australian landscape to life. This is a heartwarming book that will make you appreciate those close to you and want to take them caravanning around Australia! Anne, VIC, 4 stars

Currently on our first family holidays in over seven years, this was a great book to bring along and read on the planes and trains. though our trip is international, not a road trip, there was a lot of similarities. Found that I started out disliking all the characters who either overreacted to situations, kept secrets or were just generally mean. As the story went on, found that they all showed hidden facets and grew as people. Though a dose of open communication could have solved a LOT of these problems! Some of the secret-keeping and justifications were a bit of a reach but by the time I got to the end, I was invested enough that it made me happy anyway. Feel good story that made me want to explore Australia on my next trip! Richard, VIC, 4 stars

The Road Trip “… here we are at last, the four of us together ready for our big adventure. To the road trip.” A caravan trip across Australia—what could go wrong? Tricia Stringer’s latest, The Road Trip, is a novel that mixes humour, tension, and genuine emotion on a backdrop of the Australian Outback. The premise is simple: Sharyn expects a glamorous birthday escape, but gets a caravan journey from Adelaide to Broome instead – with her husband Barry, his friend Ray, and Ray’s reclusive sister Kathleen in tow. What follows is a story about family, friendship, and finding connection in unexpected places. There’s humour, heart, and a beautiful Outback backdrop plus some deeper moments about caregiving and letting go of old grudges. That said, this one leans more into the gentle and predictable side of storytelling. If you enjoy laid-back pace, small dramas, and character-focused reads, you might enjoy the ride. “I really didn’t enjoy caravaning to begin with but it’s grown on me and the places we’ve seen and the things we’ve done have been amazing.” Helen, VIC, 4 stars

I found it charming. I love books based in Australia due to vivid landscape descriptions and the relatable character relationships. Highly recommend. Gail, WA, 4 stars

The Road Trip follows the journey of four people in two caravans from Adelaide to Broome. Husband and wife Barry and Sharyn who have no experience in caravanning. Sharyn was expecting a more luxurious holiday for her anniversary and sixtieth birthday. Then there is widower Ray best mates with Barry and his reclusive sister Kathleen. The journey takes us to outstanding locations along the way and the different people they meet makes for a good story with some colourful characters. There are laugh out loud moments when things happen on their road trip. Issues arise tempers are stretched communication lacking resulting in mistrust. The road trip is not only about the places which they see but about themselves learning what is important and about letting things go. The story is told through the eyes of Sharyn and Kathleen. I enjoyed the development of the characters throughout the book and the relationship which the two women developed. You will enjoy this book if you enjoy stories about family, travel and relationships. The book has a mixture of comedy and drama, and you learn along the way the ups and downs of caravanning. Julie, NSW, 4 stars

Two very different couples, two caravans and a road trip of a lifetime. When a milestone birthday approaches Sharon dreams of a European adventure instead she is taken on a caravan trip through the outback against her wishes. As the trip proceeds she finds friendship, a rekindled romance with her husband and a true appreciation for an epic road trip. What a delightful read that takes you through the treasures of the Territory and WA. A joy to read. Julie, QLD, 4 stars

Sharyn’s 60th birthday celebratory holiday expectations are deflated when her husband surprises her with a caravanning holiday. Further to her annoyance he invites his friend who is bringing his reclusive sister (Kathleen) who Sharyn doesn’t particularly like. The book follows the journey through Australia and the many mishaps and adventures that happen. I enjoyed following the development of Sharyn and Kathleen’s relationship as it developed from tolerance to friendship. It is an easy enjoyable read and would recommend in particular to caravanners. Julie, QLD, 4 stars

2 couples, brother and sister, husband and wife. Virgin caravaners. Sharon and Barry celebrating a wedding anniversary and Sharon’s birthday. A surprise cruise was what she thought they would be doing ,but Barry bought a caravan and a four wheel drive and said they would drive from Adelaide to Broome with his best friend Ray and his sister Kathleen in their caravan. I was a little disappointed in this book it didn’t seem to flow. Once you got through the first part of the trip it became more interesting with quirky events and new friends. A great book for a light holiday read. Lyndsay, QLD, 4 stars

Manicured, urbane Sharyn is about to turn 60 and approaching her 35th wedding anniversary. Dreaming of a balmy tropical island getaway or a magical European river cruise her hopes are dashed and she is socially mortified when husband Barry surprises her with the gift of the pre-arranged road trip: caravanning from Adelaide to Broome! In convoy with his overbearing mate Ray, of the irritating dad jokes, and Ray’s mousy sister Kathleen. The organiser of milestone celebration fiascos had outdone himself. The deceit and secrecy of the men extends beyond the holiday planning with trust issues rising with the level of the toilet cassettes. The debacles keep coming with the frequency of tacky souvenir spoons. Ablutions block rules and laundry etiquette are harder to navigate than the vast Australian landscape. Opinionated grey nomads are more of a pain the arse than the bum-numbingly long drives. Relationships are tested like the outback bottle shop purchasing limits. And then a body is found floating in croc-infested water. What could possibly go right? Anita, QLD, 4 stars

This book was a lot of fun, quite a journey. A real joy of a book to read, I was right there along them in their caravanning journey exploring Australia. Jessica, NSW, 4 stars

I found The Road Trip a bit underwhelming. While the writing flows well, the story mostly follows everyday happenings without much sense of direction or strong plot development. It hasn’t felt particularly gripping or suspenseful so far, coming across more as a slow, meandering journey than an engaging or memorable read. Sue, WA, 3 stars

This was a nice light hearted read, I found the book a bit long, it could have been shorter as it dragged on a bit. It was interesting to learn of the main characters develop throughout the story. There was much drama along the way, small things and sometimes big and relationships frayed and tested. Overall, a good book for a rainy day. Danielle, VIC, 3 stars

Having never ready any Tricia Stringer novels in the past, The Road Trip was an enjoyable first foray into her works. Stringer’s descriptions of the Australian Outback are stunning – almost enough to encourage me to buy a caravan and take to the open road! We join Sharyn as she starts to envisage a special trip for her 60th birthday. With her friends helping her jump to conclusions we begin a comedy of errors that take us through to the red centre of Australia. On a trip with people she didn’t expect to be with to a destination she wasn’t thinking of, Sharyn becomes the travel companion we would all prefer to avoid. As the trip progresses and Sharyn and her companions dig a little deeper they all learn things they weren’t expecting and might possibly have the trip of a lifetime. A perfect read for a summer vacation, whether you are travelling in a caravan or not. Amy, NSW, 3 stars

Tricia Stringer’s latest release ‘The Road Trip’ tells the story of Sharyn, her husband Barry, his sister Kathleen and Barry friend Ray who embark on a caravan trip from Adelaide to Broome. Personalities clash in this grey nomad birthday trip, until a body shows up. This is not a bad story but I really struggled to be interested in the lives of any of the characters. I did enjoy her descriptions of traveling and the landscape. I am probably not Tricia’s target market (being younger than the 60 year FMC) so will pass this to a family member who should enjoy it more. Julia, TAS, 3 stars

Tricia Stringer’s The Road Trip is a contemporary Australian novel that brings together an unlikely group of travellers on a caravan journey across the country. Barry and Sharyn are a couple marking both a milestone birthday and wedding anniversary, joined by their recently widowed friend Ray and his reclusive sister, Kathleen. At first, I didn’t particularly warm to the characters. Each brings their own emotional and literal baggage, creating tension and awkward dynamics early in the trip—particularly given that Barry has unilaterally planned the holiday and purchased a caravan without consulting Sharyn. However, Stringer is skilled at gradually peeling back the layers of her characters, revealing their vulnerabilities, regrets, and quiet desires with a light but deliberate touch. By the final chapters, I found I was enjoying these characters and while I enjoyed reading about the fun, challenges, and unexpected camaraderie of caravan travel, it still hasn’t convinced me to try it for myself. Tracy, WA, 3 stars

A pleasant lighthearted read. Quite humorous in the challenges of caravan holidays and how friendships can be formed. I found it somewhat lacking in depth & intrigue. Therefore predictable. Annie, NSW, 2 stars

The Road Trip is a great novel probably aimed at grey nomads who could relate to the content. As a younger demographic, I can’t say I fell in love with the story or the characters. I found the characters unlikeable for majority of the book, and felt it took way too long to get some depth and story arc. In saying that, I really liked the ending. The last 50 pages is what turned me around. Stick it out to reap the rewards. I loved reading about cool places around Australia, and have now added them to my bucket list too. Alexandra, TAS, 2 stars

                      Synopsis

Sharyn Tregonning wanted a holiday somewhere glamorous for her 60th birthday. So when her husband Barry surprises her with a caravan trip from Adelaide to Broome, she is furious - and bitterly disappointed. Even worse, Barry's annoying friend Ray and Ray's reclusive frumpy sister Kathleen are coming along.

It's true that Kathleen Allenby has become a recluse. As the end-of-life carer for three family members (and at war with her mean neighbours) she has become anxious. She doesn't expect this trip to offer her much.

When a body surfaces at a luxe resort, it brings their grudges and hurts out into the open, and the women realise that it's not just the men's future - or behaviour - that needs to change.
