Darkly Glittering Gem of a Thriller: Review of Something in the Water by Catherine Steadman

Have you ever wondered how long it takes to dig a grave? Wonder no longer. It takes an age. However long you think it takes, double that.

I’m not a bad person. Or maybe I am. Maybe you should decide?

Erin and Mark seem to have it all – she’s a documentary filmmaker on the brink of a professional breakthrough, and he’s a handsome investment banker with a bright future. They are young, successful, and deeply in love – what more could they wish for? What could possibly go wrong?

Their perfect little life slowly begins to crumble, however, when Mark loses his job – but they are determined to make it work. Sparing no expense, they book their dream honeymoon to the tropical island of Bora Bora, where they embark on a scuba-diving adventure. It’s not all exotic fish and colourful coral, though, because Erin and Mark find something in the water that will change their lives forever…

Something in the Water, the spellbinding crime debut by Downton Abbey actress Catherine Steadman, has all the hallmarks of a thriller – murder, revenge, betrayal. But at its core, this page-turner is about two people desperately in love who are driven apart by the decisions they make and the crimes they commit.

Steadman’s writing is especially impressive for a debut author, her voice strong and unwavering. Erin is well-drawn – intelligent, driven and fierce. And in a genre where right and wrong is usually clearly defined, it’s refreshing to read a crime novel where the main character is both the victim and the culprit, paving the way for countless plot twists and some interesting psychological drama.

Something in the Water is a taut, relentless read. Written in the early stages to the beat of a steady drum, once the ‘something’ in the water appears, it sets off a chain of events that build to a Bourne like intensity, delivering a shocking discovery at the very end.

Fasten your seat belts.
