Last night, over a bottle of wine, I sat down with my parents and explained what a podcast is. My parents are grey nomads… so I couldn’t believe they hadn’t yet discovered the joys of podcasts on long road trips. I’m a huge fan of the podcast. I have many favourites and always listen to them in my car. Podcasts are an incredible educational and entertainment tool for all ages. But sometimes it’s easy for us to forget that not everyone has discovered the podcast yet. And that’s okay… but just like last night, I’ve decided to help those of you who haven’t yet been converted.

For the uninitiated, podcasts are free audio interviews and talk shows available to stream via the internet, so you can listen to them anytime, anywhere. Just like the radio, they cover a range of topics but generally focus on the arts, culture, news, and current affairs. The easiest way to tune in is by using a smartphone, tablet, or computer.

But the best thing is that you can play a podcast using any portable digital media player. So, while exercising, travelling to work, on a flight or simply relaxing at home, you can indulge your passion for books and reading and learn more about Stories Behind the Story by tuning into the Better Reading Podcast.

Here is the biggest advantage for you, the listener. Since traditional radio broadcasting did exactly that – appeal to a broad audience – podcasts have revolutionised the ways we engage with media because it is far more specific and tailored to different interests and niches.

Our podcast, for example, has been downloaded an incredible 300,000 times. People who download it are interested in our interviews with authors and other bookish professionals, including publishers, journalists and politicians from Australia and around the globe. If you search hard enough, you are bound to find a podcast on pretty much any subject that interests you.

Do you listen to podcasts? If not, give one a go and let us know what you think.
