The Awesomeness of Jeff Kinney: Our Favourite Books and Moments

The Awesomeness of Jeff Kinney: Our Favourite Books and Moments

In the beginning, there was Jeff Kinney: #1 USA Today, New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestselling author and a six-time Nickelodeon Kids Choice Award winner for Favourite Book. Jeff is a seriously funny guy and a very talented illustrator. (Interesting side note: Jeff and his wife own a bookstore, An Unlikely Story.)

Jeff created a character named Greg Heffley who is also known as Wimpy Kid. Jeff’s first book, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, hit the bookshops in 2007 and was a global sensation, with 15 books in the series so far. Readers aged 8 to 12 years just cannot get enough of Jeff Kinney’s imaginative writing and drawing.

Jeff also created a character named Rowley Jefferson, who is Greg Heffley’s best friend. They’ve had a lot of crazy adventures together in the Wimpy Kid diaries, but now Rowley is writing his side of the story in Diary of an Awesome Friendly Kid, Rowley Jefferson’s Journal, Rowley Jefferson’s Awesome Friendly Adventure, and now Rowley Jefferson’s Awesome Friendly Spooky Adventures, which was released in March 2021.

Here, we give you a rundown of the books in the Diary of an Awesome Friendly Kid series and round up a few of our favourites from the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series.

Diary of an Awesome Friendly Kid series

Diary of an Awesome Friendly Kid: Rowley Jefferson’s Journal

After chronicling Gregg Heffley’s middle-school years in the Wimpy Kid series, it’s finally time for readers to hear directly from Rowley in a journal of his own. In this book, Rowley writes about his experiences and agrees to play the role of biographer along the way. But Rowley is a poor choice for the job, and his ‘biography’ of Greg is a hilarious mess.

Rowley Jefferson’s Awesome Friendly Adventure

Adventure awaits! Join Roland and his best friend, Garg the Barbarian, as they leave the safety of their village and embark on a quest to save Roland’s mum from the White Warlock. Will our heroes survive? You’ll have to read it to find out!

Rowley Jefferson’s Awesome Friendly Spooky Stories

Grab a flashlight, crawl under the covers, and dive into the twisted, unexpectedly hilarious world of Rowley Jefferson’s imagination. You’ll meet zombies, vampires, ghosts, and more in these comically terrifying tales. Rowley’s spooky stories might leave you laughing, but beware… you could end up sleeping with lights on!

Diary of a Wimpy Kid series

Diary of a Wimpy Kid (Book #1)

Being a kid can really stick. And no one knows this better than Greg Heffley, who finds himself thrust into high school where undersized weaklings share the hallways with kids who are taller, meaner, and already shaving. Luckily Greg has his best friend and sidekick, Rowley. But when Rowley’s popularity starts to rise, it kicks off a chain of events that will test their friendship in hilarious fashion.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days (Book #4)

Greg, a self-confessed ‘indoor person,’ is living out his ultimate summer fantasy: no responsibility and no rules. But Greg’s mum has a different vision for an ideal summer… one packed with outdoor activities and ‘family togetherness.’ Whose vision will win out? Or will a new addition to the Heffley family change everything?

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul (Book #9)

A family road trip should be a lot of fun – unless, of course, you’re the Heffleys. The journey starts off full of promise, then quickly takes several wrong turns. Gas station bathrooms, crazed seagulls, a fender-bender, and a runaway pig… not exactly Greg Heffley’s idea of a good time. But even the worse road trip can turn into an adventure – and this is one the Heffleys won’t soon forget.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Deep End (Book #15)

Greg and his family hit the road for a cross-country camping trip, ready for the adventure of a lifetime. But things take an unexpected turn, and they find themselves stranded at an RV park that’s not exactly a summertime paradise. When the skies open up and water starts to rise, the Heffleys wonder if they can save their vacation – or if they’re already in too deep!
