You’ve Seen the Movie, Have You Read the Book?

So many of our favourite movies are based on beloved kids books, both new and old. If you’ve seen and enjoyed the movie, why not read the book and see what all the fuss is about! We think the books are even better… but we might be biased. Here is a list of 8 great books that are also kids movies.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney

Diary of a Wimpy Kid is now an animated movie streaming on Disney+! With 16 Wimpy Kid books already written by Jeff Kinney, you might have been living under a rock if you haven’t heard of Wimpy Kid. But if you’ve just seen the new movie and want to get started on the books, best start with book #1.

The Lorax by Dr Suess

The Lorax is such a lovable character that we loved on screen in its 2012 animated adaptation. The original Dr Suess book is no less fun, and is still a favourite amongst younger readers!

Little Women by Louisa May Alcott

Greta Gerwig’s 2019 production of the classic Little Women was a beautiful film that brought the story to a new generation. The book, first published between 1868 and 1869 is an enduring coming-of-age story about the charming March sisters.

The Witches by Roald Dahl

I’ll be honest, I watched The Witches film recently, and I had forgotten just how scary this story is! The book is not for the faint-hearted reader either, but if you’re up for a slightly scary bedtime read, this is a Roald Dahl classic.

Tomorrow, When the War Began by John Marsden

The first in John Marsden’s classic teen series, Tomorrow, When the War Began was first published back in 1993! The 2010 movie was a popular take on the story of teenagers who are thrust into warfare when their country is invaded. If you’re looking for your next YA read, why not try this favourite?

Fantastic Mr. Fox by Roald Dahl

Another Roald Dahl favourite, Fantastic Mr. Fox was made into a brilliant stop motion movie in 2009 featuring an all-star cast, directed by Wes Anderson. Find out how Mr. Fox escapes a terrible fate by reading the book.

The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick

The Invention of Hugo Cabret is a stunning graphic-style book that was made into an equally stunning 2011 adventure movie, entitled Hugo. I adored the black and white imagery in this book — it’s one worth revisiting.
