Alex and Molly are two girls who don’t belong on the same planet, let alone the same college campus. Alex is a little bit headstrong, with a dash of chaos and a whole lot of flirt. She knows how to get the girl. Keeping her on the other hand… not so much.
Molly has everything in her life totally in control, except for her complete awkwardness with just about anyone besides her mum. She knows she’s in love with the impossibly cool Cora Myers. She just hasn’t actually talked to her yet.
When the girls’ paths cross unexpectedly, and Alex discovers Molly’s hidden crush, they realise they might have a common interest after all. Because maybe if Alex can help Molly to get her dream girl, she can prove to her ex that she’s serious about love.
As the two embark on their five-step plans to get their girls to fall for them, though, they both begin to wonder if maybe they’re the ones falling… for each other.
She Gets the Girl is a swoon-worthy rom-com – already an instant New York Times bestseller and TikTok sensation. Rachael Lippincott is the author of The Lucky List and co-author of Five Feet Apart and All This Time, bestselling YA romances that have charmed young audiences. Now, she has co-authored a book with none other than her wife, Alyson Derrick. It’s the kind of queer rom-com they wish had been available to read when they were growing up, so they wrote it for the next generation, and it’s an absolute delight.
Alex and Molly are funny and relatable protagonists who ooze a lot of teenage sarcasm and insecurities. Told from their alternating perspectives, this novel is easy to follow. I read it quickly, desperate to find out what was going to happen in this will they/won’t they romance. After all, the two girls are not supposed to end up with each other. But as we know, life rarely goes to plan or follows the script you might have envisioned.
This is a pertinent read for YA readers aged 14+ who are navigating life, relationships and growing up. It’s very current for a teenage audience (the characters watch plenty of Netflix and Tiktok), and while American in context, the content is universal. The Asian representation through Molly is noteworthy, and the close relationship with her mother is lovingly portrayed.
She Gets the Girl is not to be missed for those who love an entertaining rom-com that puts queer teenagers’ experiences front and centre.
