I don’t think I’m alone in saying I am terrified of cockroaches. However, after reading Your School is the BEST! by talented storyteller Maggie Hutchings and illustrator Felicita Sala, I couldn’t help but fall in love with this little family of bugs. Sala’s vibrant watercolour style really brought the bugs to life, giving the story a very wholesome feel. I loved seeing what the cockroaches would get up to next to impress the students.
What I loved most about the story was how easily the message of positivity and perseverance was received by younger readers. I’ve read this to a few kids in my family and all were able to understand the themes, even in the funnier moments of the book. No matter what happens to the family of cockroaches, they are always looking for the positives in every situation.
Let’s talk about the humour. There were more than a few times when I found myself laughing out loud. Hutching’s wit is fantastic and always managed to score a laugh or three with the kids. My personal favourite was when the cockroaches were playing hide and seek with the kids and hid in the teacher’s lunchbox. Let’s just say the teacher was in for a fright!
The story takes place during a typical day at a primary school. I found it to be the perfect setting for young kids to relate to. This is the perfect book to bring into the classroom or library and read aloud.
Full of stunning illustrations, positive themes and laugh-out-loud humour, Your School is the BEST! is a standout in children’s picture books. Turning something scary into a heartfelt message of positivity is a fantastic achievement.
