CHAPTER 1

At number 6 Rufus Street lives Sam.

Sam Crisp to be exact, but you might be surprised to know that most people think his name is Sam Stop-your-frowning:

Why, you ask?

Well, that’s because every day his mum says, ‘Sam, stop your frowning – you’ll get wrinkles!’

And every day his dad says, ‘Sam, stop your frowning – you’ll stay like that if the wind changes!’

His cousin says it, his great uncle says it and his drama teacher says it. Even strangers say it.

‘SAM. STOP YOUR FROWNING!’

But no matter how many people tell him, Sam never listens, and he just pout-scowls, sulk-grumbles as he walks along.

One morning, just as Sam was leaving for school, both his mum and dad called after him (in that mum and dad way), ‘Sam! Stop your frowning:

From the age of six, when Sally Barton took her first book from the library, words and stories became an important part of her life. She not only spends her days creating fictional worlds for both adults and children, but she also passes this love and knowledge on to her students as a tutor for children with learning differences. Sally previously worked for the police, but was happiest at her job in a public library while she finished her degree in Legal Studies. Sally is an avid amateur genealogist and loves to travel.
