We met the feisty Elizabella in Elizabella Meets Her Match, the first instalment in the highly entertaining series by sisters Zoe and Georgia Norton Lodge. If you haven’t met her yet then make sure you read our review here.
This time Elizabella is faced with the depressing fact that her beloved Bilby Creek Primary is falling apart – literally -and they don’t have the funds to get it up to scratch. Things are so bad there that the life of all chalk must be maximised, the monkey bars have been declared a safety hazard and text books are a thing of the past!
The worst thing is that Bilby Creek Primary’s principal Mr Gobblefrump, keen to cut corners wherever he can, has his sights set on a lucrative corporate take-over of the tuckshop.
The threat of the dreaded multinational Nutricorp taking away homemade pies and sandwiches and replacing them with ‘brown flakes’ that taste like cardboard is too much for Elizabella to ignore. Besides, Miss Duck is the third generation of her family to run the tuck shop! Maybe if Elizabella concentrates on helping her increase profits she can save the day.
But then all hell breaks loose when Elizabella and most of Bilby Creek Primary are infested with headlice! Could things get any worse? Yes, because things are also complicated with Huck, Elizabella’s good friend who could have been more. Now that her Dad is dating his mum things have changed dramatically and she’s constantly having to squash down her feelings for him… after all he could almost be her brother!!!
How can Elizabella and her friends save the school from Nutricorp taking over especially now there are new monkey bars in the playground, new maths textbooks and art supplies? Everyone appears to be getting used to the new world order but are they being brain washed?
If anyone can think of what to do, Elizabella can but she’s going to need to come up with something big!
Elizabella is a lot of fun, a bit quirky and very inventive. Underlying the drama of the corporatisation of the school are themes of identity, loyalty, community and the importance of family. Filled with lots of wonderful illustrations, songs and a re-write of Little Red Riding Hood by Elizabella and you have the perfect combination to captivate your 8+ reader.
