Wondrous and Informative: Read Our Review of How We Came to Be: Surprising Sea Creatures by Sami Bayly

Take a deep dive into the evolution stories behind some of the most surprising creatures from the sea with award-winning author and illustrator, Sami Bayly.

Bayly is the award-winning creator of The Illustrated Encyclopaedia of Ugly Animals, The Illustrated Encyclopaedia of Dangerous Animals and The Illustrated Encyclopaedia of Peculiar Pairs in Nature. She is a natural history illustrator whose incredibly detailed and informative picture books have shone a light on some of nature’s most unusual creatures. She is a firm believer in looking beyond the cutest and fluffiest animals to discover those creatures that are a bit different and don’t get as much attention. Having read her latest book, How We Came to Be: Surprising Sea Creatures, I can safely say these marvellous creatures deserve far more attention!

Bayly herself features as a character in this book, going on a deep dive through the ocean. There, she meets some of the most unusual creatures at all levels of the ocean and hears their stories about how they have changed over millions of years to survive in the inky ocean depths.

You’ll discover why the deepsea flounder is as flat as a pancake, learn all about the 500-million-year-old comb jelly and find out why yeti crabs are so hairy. From the barreleye fish to the tripod spiderfish, prepare to be amazed by the incredible creatures that inhabit our seas.

This fascinating picture book surprised me in the best way possible! There is so much to learn within these colourful and fact-filled pages. Her vivid illustrations chart this incredible underwater journey, and it’s interesting to watch each page get darker and darker as she travels further into the depths of the ocean zones, all the way into the abyss and the trenches. The ocean might seem like a scary and unknown place, but Bayly helps readers uncover some of its darkest secrets. How We Came to Be: Surprising Sea Creatures is a wondrous book that will appeal to curious kids, adults and anyone who enjoys learning more about our incredible planet.
