1. If your child loved the first Mega Rich Guinea Pigs book, this one is even more gloriously unhinged. Witless Protection takes everything that made the first instalment so funny – the ridiculous premise, the hilariously named characters, the complete commitment to chaos – and cranks it up to full volume. A mysterious threatening letter, a Witless Protection Program that may or may not be a trap, and a capybara who has absolutely no idea he’s not a guinea pig. Kate and Jol Temple clearly understand that the best children’s humour is the kind that makes adults snort-laugh too, and this delivers from the very first page.
2. The characters are completely ridiculous and completely loveable. Lunk, Hot Head, G-Chip and Big Pig each have their own distinct personality, and the running gag of Big Pig being a capybara who must never find out the truth is the kind of sustained silliness that kids absolutely lose their minds over. There’s real comic craft here – the jokes land because the characters are consistent, and the absurdity builds beautifully across the story. ButtPay alone is worth the price of admission.
3. This is the kind of book that turns reluctant readers into enthusiastic ones. It’s fast-paced, genuinely funny, and structured so that every chapter ends on something that makes you need to read the next one. For kids who think books are boring, a story about mega rich guinea pigs in a crime caper is the kind of premise that gets them across the line and then Kate and Jol Temple’s sharp, playful writing keeps them there. Perfect for kids aged 8 and up who love laughing loudly, ideally in public.
