Addictive, deadly and completely thrilling: Review of A Dangerous Man by Robert Crais

Joe Pike is not a cop. He’d be the first to tell you that. But if you were being held captive, he’s the man the government would send to rescue you. He’s the man you’d want the government to send. Pike wasn’t looking for trouble that particular day. He was just minding his own business, running errands to the bank. But when Isabel, a young bank teller, is kidnapped in broad daylight, right outside the bank, he has no choice but to step in. He chases them down, rescues Isabel and stays until the police turn up to arrest the two kidnappers. Job done; victim rescued. Pike is happy to be on his way.

However, within the next few days, the men are released and shortly after, found dead. The abductors dead, eyes turn towards Isabel. But Isabel is missing again. Disappeared without a trace. Isabel and Pike are now both suspects in the deaths of these two men. Pike, convinced that Isabel is innocent and in danger, involves Elvis Cole, a detective and Pike’s sometimes work partner. Cole and Pike are in a race against time to find Isabel, and find the truth of why she was abducted. But they’re not the only ones desperate to find her – and desperate men are dangerous.

If you already love Robert Crais, you’ll love this newest addition to his Elvis Cole & Joe Pike series. If you haven’t read Crais, you’ll now be adding him to your must-read list! A Dangerous Man pulls you in from the very beginning and doesn’t let up until you turn the final page. I was absolutely hooked from the first chapter. Crais is a master of action. Reading A Dangerous Man was like watching an action film, one heart-pounding scene after another. It came as no surprise to find out that Crais has previously written scripts for major crime television shows. His pacing and plotting are near perfect.

A Dangerous Man is a gripping tale, and reads as a standalone in case you’re new to the series, as I was. It is so cleverly written that you won’t guess what is coming until it is happening on the page. This is a brilliant addition to the Cole & Pike series, a nail-biting thriller that will leave you wanting to know what comes next in the series, and wanting to go back and reread the entire Cole & Pike backlist. Addictive, deadly and completely thrilling.
