- Briefly tell us about your book.
It’s a family saga that follows the lives of an impoverished Hawaiian family as they struggle to make sense of miraculous events that befall them. A cross between ‘Swamplandia!’ by Karen Russel and ‘There, There’ by Tommy Orange. - What inspired the idea behind this book?
The idea behind this book—the image of a shark saving a child—just came to me out of the blue. I ignored it at first, but it was too late, because it got me started thinking about the parts of Hawai’i I hadn’t often seen represented, especially outside the islands, which was what helped me delude myself into thinking this book was necessary. - What is something that has influenced you as a writer?
The all-encompassing joy of time spent properly outdoors; the transcendence I’ve felt as a reader (and wanted to create as a writer); the legends in oral traditions and the songs built from them. - If you could give one piece of advice to aspiring writers, what would it be?
Write like you’re not going to be alive someday. - Who are some of your favourite authors? Or favourite books? I started listing my favourite authors, and it was pages long. A few (but not all) of the books that have had a profound effect on me include: ‘The Shell Collector’ by Anthony Doerr; ‘Look’ by Solmaz Sharif; ‘Jesus’ Son’, by Denis Johnson; ‘The House on Mango Street’ by Sandra Cisneros.
