Briefly tell us about your book.
The Five Rules of Friendship is a guide to friendship for young readers. Friendship is one of the best parts of life. However friendships can be complex, and many children and young people experience friendship troubles. The use of rules in this book helps young people clearly understand how to treat one another, and how they deserve to be treated.
What inspired the idea behind this book?
COVID-19 lockdowns impacted the social development of many Australian children. Upon returning to school, I had several teachers and parents ask me if I had a book to help teach children about which social behaviours were okay, and which were not. I created this book to be a guide to friendship, but at its core, this is a book about how we all deserve to be treated.
What are you hoping the reader will take away from reading your book?
I’m hoping readers realise the importance of treating others with respect and know in their hearts that they deserve to be treated with respect as well. I also hope readers take away the message that not all friendships last forever, and that’s okay!
Does the creative process get easier for you with each book?
The truth is, 10 books in, I am still trying to perfect my creative process. I have found that I write best in a café and that I need to create regular pockets of time where I can write without the pressure of a looming deadline. However, the reality is I am not always disciplined enough to make this happen.
If you could give one piece of advice to aspiring writers, what would it be?
It’s been said before but, write what you know. I love sharing the lessons I’ve learned throughout my life, and I find that when the message is close to my heart, the writing flows.
