Q&A with Trace Moroney, Author of the My Emotions Series

Q&A with Trace Moroney, Author of the My Emotions Series

Briefly tell us about your book.

I am beyond excited to tell you a little about my books! The Grief Wave and Little Big Bully are the first two books in my new My Emotions series.

The Grief Wave sensitively describes the experience of loss and grief — which can be the same as symbolic losses such as divorce (loss of family unit), friendships, or body function — and offers a range of well-researched techniques to help children develop valuable coping skills, and helps to prepare them for inevitable future grief events.

Little Big Bully describes how and why bullying happens, and offers a range of well-researched techniques to help children develop coping skills along with proactive strategies that describe what to do if they are being bullied or are witnesses to bullying behaviour. This book offers helpful guidance to bullies too!

Each book in the My Emotions series includes an activity that helps calm or empower the reader, and informative notes to parents and caregivers that provide grown-ups with an incredible toolkit of advice for supporting children through their emotions.

What are you hoping readers will take away from your book?

I hope that for both parents and children — there is something that deeply resonates with them, and valuable information and skills that can be incorporated into their own set of beliefs or culture. I hope that my books create an impetus for open conversation within a family or amongst friends.

What advice would you give to aspiring Kids/YA authors?

Be careful not to lose the very thing that makes you YOU — that is — whatever it is that makes your voice unique. In my experience, many professional courses ‘cut off’ the lovely quirky edges of amazing and creative individuals. That being said, it is important to learn and understand the basic fundamentals of your discipline — in other words — learn the boundaries so you know how to push them!

I believe it is vitally important you do your homework; understand your market; conduct yourself with a high level of integrity, and leave your ego behind!

Did you always plan to be an author? What led you to where you are today?

Being an author is something I have never aspired to be — and, even now, I do not consider myself as an author as such (my spelling and grammar is crap … technically speaking) — but rather a creator. Writing is a part of what I do, along with research, design, illustration, prepress, etc. The success in the publishing process is the carefully considered balance of these disciplines.

Who is your favourite character in the book/series? Who are you most similar to?

My favourite character is the main character of my books — the bunny. It is a combination of both me and my son (so is very dear to my heart) and represents the many experiences that have graced our lives … and, yep, I mean the crappy stuff as well. I only wish I had the tolerance and intelligence of my son … something I aspire to every day!
