Self-published Aussie novel longlisted for UK prize

Brisbane author Nicholas John Turner’s debut self-published novel Hang Him When He Is Not There has been longlisted for the Republic of Consciousness Prize.

Praised by judges as ‘the novel as hall of mirrors, and it rewards you for following it to the end,’ Hang Him When He Is Not There tells the tale of an elderly man who dies in troubling circumstances, and a proof-reader, decades later, who is preparing to meet a celebrated and reclusive novelist. These two stories meld and intertwine to create a novel like no other.

The annual Republic of Consciousness Prize, which recognises ‘brave, bold and brilliant’ literature from small presses, is open to small-scale publishers with fewer than five full-time employees.

Along with Turner’s novel, the other longlisted works are:

  • The Cemetery in Barnes (Gabriel Josipovici, Carcanet)
  • Murmur (Will Eaves, CB Editions)
  • Resistance (Julián Fuks, trans by Daniel Hahn, Charco Press)
  • Bottled Goods (Sophie van Llewyn, Fairlight Books)
  • Lucia (Alex Pheby, Galley Beggar Press)
  • Dedalus (Chris McCabe, Henningham Family Press)
  • Doppelgänger (Daša Drndić, trans by Celia Hawkesworth & S D Curtis, Istros)
  • Now, Now, Louison (Jean Frémon, trans by Cole Swensen, Les Fugitives)
  • Follow Me to Ground (Sue Rainsford, New Island Books)
  • Kitch (Anthony Joseph, Peepal Tree Press)
  • Soviet Milk (Nora Ikstena, trans by Margita Gailitis, Peirene Press)
  • Sweet Home (Wendy Erskine, Stinging Fly).

Organisers anticipate that this year’s prize money is likely to be slightly more than last year’s £12,500 (A$22,320), split between author and publisher.

The shortlist will be announced on the 2nd of March, with the winner announced on the 28th of March.
