Why we love it: the newest novel from Australian bestseller Rachael Johns brings us an addictive plot and three very different women we can’t help but love.

Felicity, Emma and Neve have been close for years. They do Friday Night Book Club, their sons are in school together, and they share all the ups and downs of their lives with each-other. Don’t they?

On the outside, Felicity (Flick)’s life seems perfect. Her husband is gorgeous, caring and the envy of her friends, her daughter is getting married, her son is sailing through his final exams – but she’s holding a secret that could threaten her family’s happiness. Emma is drowning in debt after her husband left her for a younger woman, but working herself sick and battling a crush on her boss is not what Emma’s keeping quiet about. She’s been having headaches she can’t seem to shake and it’s affecting her more than she cares to admit. Single mum Genevieve (Neve) has never needed help to raise her son, but when he starts asking questions about his father, questions she doesn’t want to answer, their close relationship is at stake.

When Neve reveals to her friends the secret of her son’s father, a secret that takes her to New York, Flick and Emma, with their own lives crumbling, jump at the chance of a getaway. It’s in New York that the three women realise they have to admit the truth. Emma’s headaches are getting worse and harder to hide, Neve has to face the love of her life with the possibility of losing him again, and Flick has to decide whether her marriage can survive a transformation she never thought would happen. Together they learn that sometimes, secrets need to be shared.

If you’re looking for a read that will pull at your heartstrings – we’ve found it. Rachael Johns is known for her page-turning plots and relatable characters, and The Art of Keeping Secrets is no different. You will fall in love with each woman, as their personalities will engage you in their own little ways. However, this is not a novel for those who don’t like surprises – you’ll throw the book down in shock multiple times! Each secret, while you may guess at it, will leave you gasping with the unexpected repercussions.

The Art of Keeping Secrets does not follow clichés. You might think you know what’ll happen with the cheating husband, the single struggling mum and the marriage break down, but Rachael Johns takes these plot lines and makes them her own in a very powerful way, as she touches on some heavy issues about gender, marriage and friendship. This book will make you think, and these three women will stay with you once you’ve turned the last page.’

Rachael Johns is an English teacher, writer and mother who discovered a passion for contemporary romance she could never extinguish. She lives in rural Western Australia with her husband and three children, although she does admit to having a crush on game-show host Grant Denyer.
