xevery-last-lie.jpg.pagespeed.ic.SKSPcoH7qoOne major accident, two life-changing stories. Mary Kubica’s latest thriller probes at just how well a wife knows her husband, what a couple may keep from one another – and why.

In Every Last Lie, Clara Solberg’s life is torn apart after her husband Nick dies shockingly, his car smashing into a tree on his way home with Chinese food for dinner. Their four-year-old daughter Maisie escapes the wreck physically unharmed, but her night terrors and fear of ‘the bad man’ gnaw at Clara, making her question whether there was more to the cut-and-dry speeding crash than the police see.

Life is tough with newborn Felix and Clara’s mother’s Alzheimer’s taking hold – but Clara digs deep for the courage to carry out her own investigations, worried there was something more sinister at play than a simple accident.

She begins to uncover Nick’s secrets and battles to make sense of what she thought was a close-to-perfect life. All the while, she keeps her own secret, unable to tell Maisie her dad isn’t coming home and saying he’s working just a little longer.

The story evolves from Clara’s point of view after the accident as she hunts for shards of the truth, and flickers to Nick’s point of view before, sewing together a suspenseful read of light and dark and keeping you glued to the page.

The cast of characters all become suspicious as Clara can barely trust her own thoughts to lead her to the truth – which, she starts to realise, she ultimately may not want to find.

This book will resonate with female readers not just because of the allure of a story brimming with secrets, but because it hones in on such a difficult period in a woman’s life, when juggling an infant and young child with plenty of sleepless nights.

Add to that emotional experience the weight of Clara’s severe grief of losing her husband, becoming unrecognisable to her mother and watching the pressures also clutch her father.Mary Kubica author photo credit Sarah Jastre

To think her husband was keeping secrets through all of this – after Clara’s father had warned her Nick just wasn’t a good enough man – would make Nick despicable. But the novel’s structure, allowing us to see the world from his point of view means it’s not cut-and-dry for the reader, either.

A compelling read with a twist, fans of thriller novels will eat up Every Last Lie.
