I think that I’ve found a new favourite author. Ashley Kalagian Blunt has hit all the elements that I enjoy in a book. She had me feeling the conditions, extremes of freezing cold that is so unlike my usual experience. She taught me things about Canada, that I kept googling to fact check. The whodunnit aspect, I didn’t guess the culprit! I think the story was so well fleshed out a lazy guess wasn’t going to solve. I also enjoyed the fact that the kidnappers weren’t the luckiest of felons. I enjoyed this book so much, it is a hearty recommendation from me. Christine, WA, 5 stars

This is my first Ashley Kalagian Blunt novel. And it won’t be my last either. Cold Truth is an engaging read, perfectly suited for consuming over long hot days during a scorching Australian summer, a juxtaposition with such descriptive scenes of icy snow. The author weaves storylines of complex sibling relationships, crime and the dirty world where deception and cruelty hides. An interesting plot which kept me entertained and engaged, making this a hard book to put down as I wanted to know what was next. So easy to read and interesting. I will be recommending this to everyone I know. Emma, VIC, 5 stars

Cold Truth, by Ashley Kalagian Blunt, is a gripping read, packed with eerie suspense that pulled me in from the very first chapter. The story unfolds at a relentless pace, beginning when Harlow discovers her father has gone missing from his isolated property during a fierce blizzard. Harlow, a travel guide who has developed an impressive online following for showcasing the history and hidden gems of her hometown of Winnipeg, quickly becomes frustrated by the local police’s lack of urgency in tracking down her father. With the reluctant assistance of her sister Blaise, Harlow embarks on a treacherous journey to uncover the truth behind her father’s disappearance. The chilling setting of Winnipeg is unique and vividly described, contributing to my growing sense of unease as the mystery of the disappearance unfolded. This fast-paced, suspense-filled novel kept me hooked from start to finish, delivering plenty of twists and tensions. Amanda, QLD, 5 stars

Ashley Kalagian Blunt has delivered a chilling thriller that grabs the reader from the first paragraph. Cold Truth is atmospheric and full of misdirection, twists and turns. The story moves at a cracking pace with the reader not sure who or what to believe. As with her previous novel Dark Mode you will be concerned with your online and digital safety and you may question and/or change your current practice. Janelle, NSW, 5 stars

Cold Truth is a book that once it’s in your hands you will not want to put it down. Harlow Close’s father mysteriously disappears and Harlow will do anything to find her dad. From taking last minute flights and meeting random people Harlow will be looking. This book will have you guessing all the time at who you think has her dad and who took him. There are bits that will have you second guessing what you know and what is going on. Such a clever story that is fast paced and action packed to keep you wanting more and more. Ashley has written a story so enthralling that you want to never put the book down. It grabbed me at the beginning and held me tight until the end. I loved this book and would recommend it to anyone. Ann-Marie, SA, 5 stars

Wow what a great book! A crime novel thriller set in sub-zero temperatures of Canada, the disappearance of Harlow’s father. What happened to him? This book is a real page turner and I loved it Heather, NSW, 5 stars

Another brilliant thriller from this author. I loved every twist and turn and the finale was as exciting as it was unexpected. Kerry, WA, 5 stars

Once I started reading Cold Truth by Ashley Kalagian Blunt I didn’t want to stop. The suspenseful story of Harlow and her sister Blaise kept me intrigued as they searched for their missing father. Set in a cold Canadian town, the story made you think about who and what you can trust. The use of technology (good and bad) was a main theme as the sisters tried to discover the truth. I would recommend this book to others who enjoy mysteries, crime or family drama. Patricia, VIC, 5 stars

The cold hard truth lies in Cold Truth. There is nothing better than an author that puts her heart and soul into a book which shows immense atmospheric feeling in the country she knows best. This book is extreme in every which way – temperature, thrills, spills, chaos and tension. Loved every bit. That’s the truth. Rylee, NSW, 5 stars

When Winnipeg influencer and tour guide Harlow’s father vanishes, the police don’t seem to be all that concerned, so she feels compelled to commence her own investigation. She, along with her sister Blaise, is pulled into a world of criminals and crypto coin. Blaise and Harlow couldn’t be more different, and throughout the course of events, Harlow starts to question if she has ever known Blaise at all. You think you know someone!! I really enjoyed this book, and I loved the interplay between the characters that created so many twists and turns that I almost read the book in one sitting. Highly recommended. Dariel, WA, 5 stars

The Cold Truth is an atmospheric and chilling thriller and I devoured it! I enjoyed the suspense, if you’re looking for your next thriller I highly recommend! A Canadian winter, a missing father, a complicated sibling relationship and the dark web makes for an intriguing read. Thank you so much Better Reading for an advanced copy of the book to review. Peter, SA, 5 stars

Cold Truth is a wonderful atmospheric thriller. Being an Australian I haven’t experienced the extreme cold climate experienced in Winnipeg and I loved the authors description of the frigid and non-forgiving town. Ashely Kalagian Blunt is a gifted author who twisted and turned the plot from chapter to chapter. I was continually changing my mind, on what was happening and who was responsible. The chapters were short which enabled me to sneak in an extra one on a regular basis! I was hooked within the first few pages, and loved the two formats -one being “elsewhere” and one following Harlow. The book gave some dark and frightening messages regarding technology and what information might be out there on the internet about people. I thought that some of this was futuristic until I read the authors note and the end – then I felt positively frightened! I really recommend this book for lovers of crime, thrillers, family sagas and mystery. I haven’t read this author before but will be seeking out more of her novels. Tracey, TAS, 5 stars

I could feel the cold through the pages of this incredible thriller. Ashley takes you on a whirlwind of intrigue and mystery. Feeling the sister’s desperation for their missing father in the depths and secrets of Winnipeg. It took my breath away !!! Karen, WA, 5 stars

Loved it! Suspenseful whodunit, keeping you guessing at the turn of every page. Great characters. Very well written. Interesting plot revealing the shocking truths on how easy it is for phones to be hacked turning lives complete upside down. Truly a great read. Katrina, QLD, 5 stars

Set in the icy heart of Winnipeg, Harlow Close discovers her father has gone missing. Harlow feels she is the only person who can truly help him and as each day passes, things become more desperate. With twists and turns in every direction and secrets unfolding; I found myself drawn so far into the story that I simply couldn’t put it down! For those who enjoy a great thriller read, I strongly suggest picking this one up. A five star read for me! Amanda, VIC, 5 stars

A tantalising mystery novel with twists and turns aplenty. Time and again, just when you think you know where things are headed, the story shifts dramatically. Enjoy the ride! Andrew, QLD, 5 stars

A fast-paced, modern thriller with a turn at every corner…you just never know who to trust or what is real. A great read that kept me hooked until the end! Jody, QLD, 5 stars

Cold Truth by Ashley Kalagian Blunt started out a little slow for my liking and had me unsure as to whether I’d actually enjoy the book but I persevered and continued reading over 3 – 4 nights and I was glad I did! Influencer Harlow Close uncovers the secrets of her hometown Winnipeg – dubbed ‘North America’s strangest city’. It won’t be just the unimaginable cold temperatures that left me cold – it was the disappearance of Harlow’s father Scott and the initial police involvement that left me suspicious and enough for Harlow to investigate for herself along with her sister Blaise. Everything that happens after her father’s disappearance Harlow finds herself questioning everyone and everything she once believed. This is a must read for fans of Ashley Kalagian Blunt and for anyone wanting to read something a little different to their usual reads. Catherine, NSW, 5 stars

Absolutely brilliant! I thought the previous book was good but this just has so many plots I could not put this book down, Harlow is a great character as is Blaise her sister overall another wonderful book Deborah, NSW, 5 stars

Loved it! Who can you trust? A gripping, gritty read that kept me guessing until the end. Highly recommend. Lisa, WA, 5 stars

Cold Truth kept me guessing who the mystery suspects were the whole way through the book. There were a lot of twists and turns and throughout the story it could have been anyone. I don’t usually read crime fiction books but the next book on my list will be Dark Mode by the same author. Easy to read and imagine being there. 5 stars. Angela, QLD, 5 stars

Another chilling hard-to-put-down thriller from Ashley Kalagian Blunt! The setting of wintery Winnipeg is very well drawn and suits the atmospheric action. Harlow Close is searching for her father, who has suddenly disappeared. She tries to get her sister Blaise to help but the sisters have a strained relationship and things steadily get worse. There are many twists and turns and Harlow starts to doubt everyone and everything (with good reason!). I LOVED this book and it will stay with me. Denise, QLD, 5 stars

Wow what a page turner Cold Truth is and I love every moment of it! This new tech thriller is a must read – there were so many twists I was hanging on to every word. It has been a while since I’ve wanted to read a book both faster and slower at the same time. The setting, the characters, the storyline a cold dark twisted nightmare and I loved it! A timely reminder of just how much of our personal info is just a quick internet search away. Melanie, WA, 5 stars

Upon starting the first chapter of Cold Truth this book was hard to put down! A really engaging story line about the sisters search for their missing father, scams along the way, and all set in the freezing cold. You feel like you’re a part of the story line – intense, heartfelt and twist and turns along the way, really good and would highly recommend! Julie, NSW, 5 stars

I read this book in one day! It’s fast-paced, mystery crime thriller and absolute page turner, could not put it down. Cold Truth by Ashley Kalagian Blunt is a story about Hallow Close a Canadian influencer who runs a walking tour business in Winnipeg Candida. Hallow knows something is wrong when her father goes missing, and she just had to do something to find him. I was hooked from the first page, this book starts right in the action, with twists and turns throughout, it had me on the edge all the way through, with so many suspects, twists and surprises. At times it had me second guessing what was true and false, and who could be trusted or not. I also loved the sister relationship, and underlying tension between Hallow and her sister Blaise these two characters gave the story so much depth. Whilst in so many ways the writer made it clear how cold Winnipeg was, at times I felt cold reading it. Then there was the clever and chilling focus on tech/internet/AI aspects in this mystery crime thriller, gave it a real modern unique crime story line. Fran, VIC, 5 stars

Having previously read the author’s debut novel Dark Mode, I was thrilled to receive an ARC of her latest Crime Thriller, and really looked forward to reading it. I was not disappointed. From the outset it had me in its grip. It was a real page turner that once I started I couldn’t put down. The book had so many clever plot twists and I never suspected who it was that wanted the FMC, Harlow, dead – until almost the end of the book. The setting of the book in freezing cold Winnipeg added to the chilling atmosphere of the plot and fitted so well with the title of the book. The author’s love for her home town shone through. I enjoyed reading the Author’s note at the end of the book which helped explain the reasoning behind the author wanting to write on this theme of the downside of modern technology and “its ability to manipulate our perceptions of reality”. This is quite a confronting and disturbing, not to mention downright scary, aspect of life in our current day. The book was fast paced, easy to read and certainly addictive. It was a 5 star read for me and I think it would be a great choice for a Book Club read as there is much to discuss in it. The Book Club questions on pages 390-391 are thought-provoking and likely to result in a great discussion. I am very happy to recommend this book, especially to those readers looking for an outstanding psychological thriller. Ruth, WA, 5 stars

I devoured Ashley’s previous book, Dark Mode and found this one equally hard to put down! Set in Winnipeg, Canada the depiction of the icy winter is so real you can just about feel the cold in your fingers and toes! The chill factor adds to the atmosphere and pressure that builds as Harlows father remains missing. Believing the police aren’t helping, she is determined to investigate herself before its too late. The complicated relationship she has with her sister, the break up with her ex boyfriend, along with other secrets waiting to be unearthed, all have you unsure of who to trust – who is telling the truth? Is her Father even who she thought he was? I kept changing my mind, as the twists and turns unfolded. It is fast paced and tense, snowballing to an end I didn’t see coming. Another excellent tech thriller, it again makes you question who could be accessing and/or manipulating the information you willingly put online. Sue, VIC, 5 stars

This book had a lot of twists and turned in it and the further along I got in reading it the more I could not put it down. I really enjoyed reading this book. Interesting story line about the sisters but in the end it all worked out okay. Karen, QLD, 5 stars

Harlow Close has her own business doing tours of her home town of Winnipeg where it is known for sub-zero temperatures. When Harlow’s father disappears without a word or trace she makes a call to 911 to get some assistance. Detectives make a house call, but aren’t getting any answers and they are not returning her calls. Harlow starts her own search for her father leaving no stone unturned and enlists the help of her sister Blaise’s reluctant help. With all of the twists and turns things get very weird and nothing is as you would expect. Harlow has suspicions about everyone around her including her own sister and even wonders if she herself is losing her mind. All the suspense meant that I could not put the book down until I found out the truth at the end! Vicki, VIC, 5 stars

I read this book in 30+ degree heat so the cold was quite a welcome change! Great storyline and memorable characters. I literally felt myself unraveling as Harlow started to question her sanity. All is not as it seems! A great read. Lina, VIC, 5 stars

Cold Truth kept me reading late into the night and at every opportunity until I finished it over two days. The twists and turns had me guessing who was responsible for the disappearance of Harlow’s dad, Scott. Guessing incorrectly as it turned out. Great read set in the extreme climate of Winnipeg where family secrets, difficult relationships, undesirable connections and an unexpected perpetrator are exposed. Lyn, QLD, 5 stars

This is the 2nd novel I’ve read by the same author and knew I was in for a page turner again. Filled with twists, turns and leaves you second guessing about your own tech devices. The tricky relationship between the sisters also plays into the mysterious nature of the book. Throw in an abduction, secrets from the past and a few suspicious characters, this is an icy-cold (pun intended) thriller that has you on edge till the end. Rachael, NSW, 5 stars

I really enjoyed this read. It was one of those well written, easy to absorb novels that kept you guess right up to the very end. I would have loved a “12 months later chapter” to see how it all paned up down the track but apart from that it was great. I will definitely share this around and keep an eye out for any upcoming novels by Ashley. Kristy, NSW, 5 stars

Cold Truth is all action and full of twists, set in the unbelievably cold Winnipeg, Canada. The setting creates a whole new depth of danger and urgency as a person can get hypothermia and die within minutes. As a reader from Queensland, Australia, these temperatures are completely unfathomable to me. Harlow Close is searching for her missing father but the longer she searches, she realises there are less and less people she can trust. Who and what is real? As I got further into this book, I was not able to put it down. A great read for anyone who loves suspense and intrigue. Jodi, QLD, 5 stars

Read this in one go… thrilling and engaging with so many twists and turns. I was enthralled and thoroughly enjoyed. Jenny, VIC, 5 stars

Harlow Close was concerned for her father when he didn’t arrive for their lunch date. Her father, Scott Close, is always on time always for an occasion and always answers his phone. She called her sister Blaise to see if she had heard from him and arranged to meet at his house. When Harlow arrived first, she was barrelled over by someone dressed in black as she opened the door. When Blaise arrived shortly after, they search the house and there is no sign of their father and notice his phone, keys, wallet and laptop are missing. They call the police and very soon two detectives turn up, as they were in the area….. They are Det. Bill Hawkins and Det. Trevor Flynn. Harlow and Blaise put out a missing persons poster and get several calls but one from his new wife….. Stranger things happen and Harlow takes it upon herself to find her father and later finds there is a HIT on her. Will their father be found in time? This was a mystery that kept you guessing right through, a great page turner. Sue A, NSW, 5 stars

Just when I thought I’d worked it out, another twist happened. Best book I’ve read in a while. A real page turner. Be prepared to not put it down. Janice, WA, 5 stars

The Cold Truth was an action-packed crime thriller novel. Ashley Kalagian Blunt had me following every twist and turn throughout the book, not wanting to put the book down. The characters were intriguing and the setting so amazing that I would like to visit Winnipeg. I can’t wait for the next novel from Ashley and I am going to the shop now to buy Dark Mode. Christine, WA, 5 stars

Featuring a compelling female lead and captivating supporting characters, this book delivers an intriguing plot full of unexpected twists and turns that kept me guessing until the final page. It’s a suspenseful, “edge-of-your-seat” read. The writing is both raw and sophisticated, showcasing the skill of a clearly talented author. I appreciated the seamless blend of fact and fiction, and the Author’s Note at the end was a thoughtful addition. Sue, NSW, 5 stars

A gutsy, strong and independent business owner, Harlow Close, not satisfied with the police investigation into her father, Scott’s disappearance, will stop at nothing to find him, even if it means that her life is in danger. Living in the Southern Hemisphere, it’s hard to imagine what sub zero temperatures, icy roads, knee deep snow and blizzards are like, but it makes this fast paced thriller all the more chilling. What’s more frightening is how powerful technology can be used for all the wrong reasons. If you liked Dark Mode, you’ll love Cold Truth! Philippa, VIC, 5 stars

Reading Cold Truth by Ashley Kalagian Blunt will make the reader wary of using their many electronic devices and trusting their online data again. Set in Winnipeg, Canada, where winter temperatures can fall to as low as minus 40 degrees Celsius, this novel covers the attempts of tour guide, Harlow Close, in locating her father who has disappeared from his home. When the police do not appear to be taking Scott’s disappearance seriously, Harlow does all she can to discover what has happened to her father. However, Harlow soon realises that she does not know who she can trust. As the investigation continues, Harlow also realises that she does not know as much as she thought about the life of her father. She also becomes aware that her life is in danger. Who is behind these events and why? Cold Truth, a gripping crime novel that readers will want to just keep reading until the end, is definitely a book of the twenty-first century. Vicki, VIC, 5 stars

What a great page turner. Very modern novel with mentions of crypto currency and malware etc Loved the descriptions of Winnipeg, Manitoba. An area I am not familiar with. Such extreme temperatures – why would anyone live there? The characters were believable and the twists very surprising each time.. Not your normal run of the mill crime read. I really enjoyed it and will read her other books. Will definitely recommend this book to friends Joy, VIC, 5 stars

This is an absolute wow of a novel from an author new to me. It’s a great thriller, with strong characters and a very topical bent. This is a very contemporary thriller, with the risks of abused technology woven throughout the novel. Some of it is telegraphed very early; some comes as a nasty surprise later in the plot. You could call it a warning, I guess, but it’s really just an updated version of the many hideous ways people find to trick and use each other. Blunt is an Australian author, with a Canadian background, and it shows in the vivid setting. You’ll feel the chill as you read this, including the very real fear the cold inspires in those who live there. Most importantly, this is an absolutely absorbing read. You’ll care about Harlow, you’ll be cheering her on in her search, you’ll share her bewilderment and horror as the revelations begin to pile up. Highly recommended – an excellent thriller which covers some issues you’ll be thinking about long after you’ve closed the novel. Lorraine, ACT, 5 stars

Another dark and twisty tech thriller from the author of Dark Mode Ashley Kalagian Blunt. What a timely reminder of just how easily technology can be used to hoodwink, manipulate and deceive. How quickly a simple internet search can locate information about a person. Add in deep fakes, chat gpt, the dark web, viruses and malware software and eek!! Because ‘When you could fake everything, how could you prove anything?’ This was one exhilarating ride. Influencer/tour guide Harlow Close from Winnipeg, Manitoba, is devastated when her father goes missing and is suitably desperate to find him. What follows is a frenetic race to uncover the truth in a dangerously frosty setting (ten mins to die of hyperthermia!). Harlow is a fiercely determined FMC which was refreshing (nothing about her says damsel in distress for which I am grateful). The cast is captivating, the pace is brisk, the landscape is appropriately perilous. A stellar thriller. Anyhoo, enjoy the book, I’m off to burn my phone. Katherine (Kate), VIC, 5 stars

A fast-paced read that kept me on the edge of my seat! I loved the Winnipeg setting. It transported me back to Canadian winters. This book also kept me second guessing – basically everything and everyone! The author knows how to write a gripping, engaging story full of twists and turns. The characters are well-developed and the atmosphere tense and dramatic. Fantastic. It has made me want to read more from Ashley in future! Ellen, TAS, 5 stars

I could not put this down and finished in an evening. Solid character building, a fast paced whodunnit in an atmospheric setting. This author is top notch! James, QLD, 5 stars

Cold Truth by Ashley Kalagian Blunt was an amazing tale of love, doubt and secrets. I found it a gripping crime story of a daughter, Harlow, trying to locate her father who disappears during a severe cold spell in Winnipeg, Canada. So well written I could feel the cold in my extremities as she set about finding her father. Harlow found it hard to trust anyone as those around her constantly complicated their relationships. There were many twists in the plot, just who was trustworthy was difficult to decide. This is a real page-turner, gripping from beginning to end. I highly recommend this to any enthusiastic crime reader. Annette, ACT, 5 stars

Wow! From the very first page the pace and tone was set for most of the story. The pace does falter a little in parts, but mostly it’s fast … and kept me reading. There was a mix of characters – some likeable, some not so much and others just plain nasty. I was invested in knowing what happened to Scott and why all kinds of crazy things were happening to Harlow, our main character. Were they real? Were they crazy? I learnt a lot about Winnipeg that I did not know before and even more about the technology we might take for granted in today’s world. Perhaps I am tempted to visit Winnipeg and most certainly will take steps to safeguard privacy & tighten security on all devices that take me on ‘online’. The new (sub) genre of tech-noir has arrived. Kaytee, NSW, 4 stars

“When you could fake everything, how could you prove anything?” When Harlow is unable to contact her father, she knows that something is wrong. They normally speak multiple times every day, so why isn’t he answering her? Her sister Blaise is less concerned. But then, Harlow and Blaise are very different people, with a complicated relationship. . The police respond quickly to Harlow’s initial 911 call but later there is no record of the call logged. She becomes a suspect in her fathers disappearance. Harlow begins to doubt herself & her actions. Cold Truth was action packed, dealing with personal loss and deceit, also the complexities of technology. The city of Winnipeg, Canada, where the book is set, becomes a character of its own. A city known for its brutal winter temperatures, weather certainly plays its part in this story. A great read. Anne, ACT, 4 stars

Sometimes an author will have a book that is a great success and their next book is just ‘meh’.. This is not one of those times!! I thoroughly enjoyed this, I truly couldn’t put it down from the moment I began reading and had it completed in less than 24 hours. I loved how descriptive the settings were (I also now need to go to Canada ASAP) and the characters were developed so well I felt like I had known them personally for years. In Cold Truth we follow Harlow while she investigates her father’s sudden disappearance and watch while she has so many curveballs thrown at her and still manages to solve various personal and family mysteries. A huge aspect of this novel is based on the wonders of technology and how it can be used as SUCH a weapon, I won’t lie it has me doing some DEEP thinking! Georgia, TAS, 4 stars

Having read her last book I knew this book would not disappoint. Great who dunnit with many twists and turns that had me guessing until the end. An enjoyable holiday read. Jo, VIC, 4 stars

Wow! The twists and turns in this book had me feeling dizzy! I really enjoyed that this was unpredictable and I didn’t see the twists coming. I didn’t get to the reveal knowing who the attempted murderer was, and I applaud that. An excellent crime novel. Would recommend. Melanie, NSW, 4 stars

The Australian queen of the tech thriller or dark web noir is back much to the content of fans of The Dark Mode author. Cold Truth is a blizzard set family mystery thriller, that fuses our huge reliance on technology and the dangers of this presents of opening ourselves up to sheer terror. Following an influencer and tour guide operating in Winnipeg, Harlow is shocked when she learns that her father is missing when temperatures dip to below freezing in the Canadian province. What occurs next is a race against time as Harlow and her sister play a dangerous game of search and find to locate their father. I guarantee you will be on edge, as this nail-biting chiller takes you on a twisty ride through themes of online crime, dark web deals, hitmen, trafficking, catfishing and bitcoin currency bargaining chips. It is a cautionary warning to all about how open we are as users of the web to become an easy target to predators. Make sure you wrap yourself up tight in your warmest blanket, oodie or dressing gown, this Cold Truth will have you shivering in fear! Amanda, WA, 4 stars

A fast paced crime fiction that kept me guessing until the very end. While enthralled in the story, and struggling to put it down, it also had me thinking deeply about the implications of our technology use. Danae, TAS, 4 stars

An interesting and captivating holiday read! I found myself not wanting to put it down and just had to get to the end Ted, QLD, 4 stars

Cold Truth was a very enjoyable and thrilling story. The book had me guessing during and thinking for a long time after. It definitely makes a person reflect on their own use of technology and what we share to the world. The pace was well-balanced and made for an entertaining read. Emma, QLD, 4 stars

You think you know your immediate family, until you realise you don’t. Harlow is thrown into confusion and caos when her father disappears out of the blue. This book, while keeping you guessing, will have you feeling for Harlow. It is a masterfully written crime novel. Eleanor, WA, 4 stars

Harlow and her sister, Blaise, team up to investigate the disappearance of their father despite their stormy relationship. The freezing cold climate of Winnipeg adds another dimension to the story and kept me rivetted to the story throughout. Having read Dark Mode I was surprised (and pleased) to read this very different book. It is every bit as good, or perhaps better than, its predecessor. I would recommend this book, 4.5 stars from me. Judi, NSW, 4 stars

Cold Truth is a fast-paced crime thriller set in the icy cold atmosphere of a harsh Canadian winter. The main protagonist is Harlow Close, a tour guide and blogger in her native city of Winnepeg, still reeling from a recent relationship breakdown. On the mysterious disappearance of her father Scott, Harlow investigates, and is helped by her sister Blaise, with whom she has a difficult relationship, Family secrets are unearthed as the search continues, and the danger snowballs for Harlow and her family. The strong technological focus adds an interesting dimension, with warnings about modern devices of tracking and deception blurring what is real and what isn’t. While I guessed some elements of the mystery, this did not diminish my reading enjoyment and I would definitely recommend this book to readers who like plenty of action and a few twists along the way. Sandra, TAS, 4 stars

Cold Truth by Ashley Kalagian Blunt is not my usual type of read but it was a good one. The characters were introduced well and the story line kept me interested till the end. Story of family relationships, crime and intrigue. Plot twists at the end were good and unexpected Authors notes at the end also were informative and made you think I enjoyed this book and would recommend Leonie, SA, 4 stars

I think the Author did well in keeping the reader guessing the plot, keeping you engaged and guessing. It was very well written and the secrets that are unravelled at the end is worth the wait. Katrina, TAS, 4 stars

This was another gripping read by this author. I really enjoyed her first novel, so was excited to read this. This time she transports us to winter in Winnipeg, Canada. I loved the way the weather was a character in its own right and you could really feel how bitterly cold it must be. Harlow Close is a great main character who is trying to find her missing father. She’s plucky and resourceful but struggles with her rebellious sister, Blaise. She is also frustrated by the police investigation and starts her own search. Blaise is not happy about being co-opted into the search. The author does a good job of showing the nuances of this uneasy relationship. The author’s great strength is in exploring the dark side of technology and how willing we are to put our lives on the internet. It certainly made me think ! The resolution was satisfying and well paced. I really enjoyed this and loved the unique setting. If you like fast paced thrillers with compelling characters, you’ll enjoy this. Kecia, NSW, 4 stars

Cold Truth had me guessing until the end of the book. I could not put it down. A thrilling read .Good holiday reading! Litsa, VIC, 4 stars

A chilly thriller set in the sub zero temperatures of a Winnipeg winter, ‘North America’s strangest city’ but with an Australian flavour! (I want the recipe for the Caramello Koala cake). Contemporary, fast paced and a real page turner. Pamela, QLD, 4 stars

An articulate exploration of the complexities of humans and the levels of revenge one is willing to go to. Woven through the story, intricate clues we all could leave that makes us possibly as guilty as the perpetrator, Particularly in the eyes of those investigating. Maryanne, NSW, 4 stars

What a journey! I devoured this book in a day, a very wet day, I might add. The story is full of twists and turns, keeping you guessing until the very end. Harlow’s father has disappeared and nothing she does seems to be helping find him. Her sister and partner aren’t helping and even the police are dragging their feet. Set in winter in Winnipeg, Canada, the icy conditions added to the premise that technology can be manipulated to make anything seem real built a terrifying background to a complicated story. The characters are well developed with twists throughout the book, building different scenarios and confusing my guesses about ‘whodunnit’. Ashley weaves her story masterfully around her character’s fears for her father, her relationship with her sister, the misinformation due to technology, and the dangerous weather conditions. As the story progressed I found myself more and more frightened by the manipulated technology. I highly recommend this book, exactly what a thriller should be. Catherine, QLD, 4 stars

Cold Truth takes us into a world most thrillers don’t go – the depths of winter in Canada’s Manitoba province! And the setting is something the author, Ashley Kalagian Blunt, knows well. While she’s now escaped to the warmth of Australia, Blunt grew up in the Manitoban capital, Winnipeg, so she knows how cold it gets and is able to make the weather a vital part of the story. It focuses on Harlow Close, who is desperate to find her father, Scott, who has disappeared in mysterious circumstances. But nothing is what it seems and Harlow finds herself suspecting everyone, including her sister Blaise, who isn’t being as helpful as she could be in the search for their father. But Cold Truth turns out to be more than just about the weather. Almost everyone in the story has something to hide and there’s a continuous warning about just how exposed we all are on line if we’re not careful! It’s the skill of the perpetrator on line and their ability to avoid Harlow’s scrutiny that gives this story its surprising twist. Well worth the read and be prepared for a few surprises! Now. after reading Dark Mode and being terrified of what we all put out there to be taken by others, I was excited to have this book. And being thrown into the freezing temperatures of Winnipeg definitely had me intrigued. Harlow’s father is missing, her sister barely cares, and her thoughts are rapidly scaring her. With little to no help from the police, Harlow starts her own investigation into the disappearance. After the police decide to do a forensic search at her dad’s house, she is hopeful something will turn up. But things just don’t add up. Questioning everything she sees and feels, including herself, her sister, the neighbours, her ex, the police, she is confused by every twist and turn, and all she discovers. Meanwhile, her dad is in danger. In this wildly vivid freezing world described to plunge you into the heart of winter, you can not help to be immersed in this twisty thriller. With a nod to Dark Mode and the dangers of online crime, I was again reading this as fast as I could. Unable to put it down for too long. The relationship between the sisters felt so real, their differing personalities raw. The mysterious disappearance of their father and the outcome was not what I had expected, thrown by many twists, and then the “aha” moment, delivered so well. This book is hard to put down and delivers a mighty good story that yet again highlights the dangers of the Web we so easily give ourselves to.  Ali, TAS, 4 stars

Very gritty from the first chapter. Kept me engrossed throughout. Really good. Mandy, TAS, 4 stars

Cold Truth by Ashley Kalagian Blunt is a gripping story full of twists and turns. Throw in a complicated family, bitter Canadian weather and shadowy dark web dealings, this book has it all. When Harlow tries to discover what happens to her father, when he mysteriously disappears during a cold snap, suspicious circumstances are looking to be likely, she slowly realises that she can’t trust anybody. Unfortunately, she even begins to question herself, this culminates in an emotion charged ending, one I didn’t see coming. Must admit the shady online dealings that make this book a thriller is a little chilling. They compel you to keep reading following the cookie crumbs Ashley Kalagain Blunt has left you. You won’t be able to put this one down. Janet, NSW, 4 stars

I really enjoyed this book. I think it was well written and the twists and turns were imaginable. The lengths people will go to find loved ones is incredible. The intrigue was heightened with all the false leads. Vivien, ACT, 4 stars

Cold Truth is a compelling read from beginning to end. The plot development is plausible throughout. The narrative enveloping the story really draws the reader in. The description of the cold almost has one shivering. The description of Winnepeg makes you want to visit. The weaving into the story of the perils associated with the use of computers and phones is cleverly done. All in all an enthralling read. John, VIC, 4 stars

I love the Cover Page. I love the Subject Line. The author introduces strong characters. A Bone Chilling story, a relentless tale that had me guessing at every turn. Showing complicated relationships between Sisters, jealousy but also love A fast-paced novel, with lots of twists and turns Bridget, VIC, 4 stars

Ashley Kalagian Blunt’s Cold Truth hooked me with its icy setting and the fraught sibling dynamic between Harlow and Blaise. What I loved most was Harlow herself—a flawed, determined character whose instincts as a truth-seeking influencer clash with her personal vulnerabilities. She’s abrasive yet deeply empathetic, and her obsession with uncovering her father’s disappearance felt raw and authentic. Matilda, QLD, 4 stars

My plan to start 2025 productively by tackling a list of jobs at home on New Year’s day before returning to work on January 2nd evaporated when I decided to pick up Cold Truth and read the first 10 or 20 pages to get a start on it before getting on to my to do-list. I didn’t make it out of my pyjamas until after 3pm when I’d finished the book – I was completely gripped. The lesser known (to me) setting of Winnipeg made the story interesting, the city was itself a character. I was engrossed the twisty-turny plot and I was continually changing my mind about which character would turn out to be the one ‘whodunnit’. It was a pacey read, which I thoroughly enjoyed, and if any of the tech aspects were possible plot holes, I’m nowhere near enough of a tech head to have realised! I’ve downloaded Ashley Kalagian Blunt’s earlier book, Dark Mode, and am hoping it’s as much of a thriller as Cold Truth. Leanne, QLD, 4 stars

Overall, I enjoyed this book. I wasn’t entirely sold in the beginning, but the book got better as I went along. The plotline and the mystery itself were not as rushed near the end as other books that I’ve read. I didn’t expect the ending, but it wasn’t so surprising that it seemed unreasonable. I think that the setting for this novel was a great choice as it really added to the story. All in all, a pretty good read! Jemma, SA, 4 stars

This psychological thriller is set in the depths of winter in Canada, where the story takes you on a rocky ride of plot twists. The father of two sisters mysteriously disappears, frustrated by the lack of progress from the police investigation Harlow (older sister) with the reluctant assistance of her younger Blaise launch their own search. Their effort find them questioning elements of their own childhood and doubting everyone around them including each other. The plot includes online hackers and crypto currency, highlighting the ease with the use of technology information can be created and used to deceive and manipulate. I would recommend this book to crime readers. Thank you to Goodreads for the advanced copy. Julie, QLD, 4 stars

This crime mystery has one stand out character for me and that’s the sun zero freezing weather of winter in Winnipeg. All the drama is magnified by the extreme conditions of Canada’s winter. The mystery of Harlow and Blaine’s’ fathers suspicious disappearance leads to a tangled web of lies, murder, theft and violence. We are also given some hard truths in the negative impacts of some social media and complex issues involving AI, malware and viruses which can be used by hackers and criminals. All this never stops the main character Harlow in doggedly searching for her father and searching for the truth. At times you could almost feel that bitter cold (amazing really as I sit in the heat of a Sydney summer) while reading this book. All the characters, while some quite quirky are still believable. The author cleverly leads us in one direction and then another, as we try to determine who is lying, who is guilty. A very enjoyable read and powerfully demonstrates the strength and determination of family love. Caroline, NSW, 4 stars

A very competently plotted propulsive thriller set in Winnipeg. Harlow, who runs local tours, is searching for her missing father, helped and sometimes hindered by her sister, with whom she has a tricky relationship. I think I really enjoyed the sibling relationship parts, which were very believable and well done, more than the thriller bits (which have the usual touch of ludicrousness). A great plane read! Ashley Kalagian Blunt’s “Cold Truth” is a gripping thriller set against the backdrop of a brutally cold Canadian winter. The plot, centred around the suspicions of foul play following the disappearance of the father of the two main characters, is fast paced and the suspense builds steadily, keeping the reader hooked until the shocking conclusion. The two main characters, Harlow and Blaise are complex and well-developed, with their relationships adding depth to the story. The harsh winter landscape creates a sense of isolation and danger, adding to the tension. The novel explores themes of family, trust, and the dangers of the digital age. “Cold Truth” is a captivating read that will appeal to fans of suspenseful thrillers. Ashley Kalagian Blunt’s skillful writing and atmospheric setting make this a chilling and very enjoyable story. Antony, VIC, 4 stars

What a page turner! I finished this book in two sessions, thanks to the twisty plot and taut writing of Ashley Kalagian Blunt. Cold Truth is set in wintry Winnipeg and the location is as much a character as any of the people. Harlow’s father, Scott, mysteriously vanishes, and she is swept up into the murky online world of hackers and crypto-currency as she races against time to find her dad. But as she struggles with the cold, her family and the past, she realises that she doesn’t know the truth about her father at all. An action packed thriller – highly recommended! Lisa, NSW, 4 stars

Cold Truth by Ashley Kalagian Blunt is a thrilling crime fiction novel, complete with the twists that keep you guessing until the end. Underlying this, is the terrifying tech aspects of the crime. In this new world, how can we ever tell what is real and what is fake? An enjoyable read that will make you reassess the digital world. Alice, NSW, 4 stars

I devoured this book in just over one day! It’s fast-paced, intriguing, tense and surprising. We follow Harlow Close, a Canadian influencer who has a walking tour business in Winnipeg. All seems bright until the day her father disappears, and Harlow believes he is in danger. She is convinced that something is seriously wrong and doubts the efforts of the local police so launches her own investigation with the reluctant help of her sister Blaise. Slowly Harlow starts to discover things about her father that make her more than a little uneasy and her relationship with Blaise, already tenuous, gets even more rocky as the two sisters clash over almost everything. What is clever about the way the author has developed this story are the tiny reveals, plot twists and turns that pop up throughout, throwing Harlow off balance, having her question what is real and what is not. It is a page turner that will prompt some thinking about how much we willingly (and also inadvertently) share online and how easy it is for someone / anyone to learn a lot about us and to also track us down. Fascinating right down to the last page! Lee, NSW, 4 stars

I just finished this and what a ride! This book is a gripping read with so many twists and turns that I was hooked from the first page. The suspense is constant, and you’ll find yourself second guessing everything—and everyone—right up until the very end. The way the author crafts the mystery is brilliant. There are so many potential suspects, and just when you think you know who did it, she throws in another curveball. The pacing is perfect, keeping you on the edge of your seat the entire time. One unexpected bonus for me was the setting—Winnipeg. The author really brought the city to life, and it’s made me want to visit. If you love a good mystery that keeps you guessing, I definitely recommend. It’s a twisty, unpredictable thriller that will keep you hooked all the way to the very end. Carly, NSW, 4 stars

I went into this book knowing little about Canada (let alone its weather) and can definitely say I learnt a lot about it through reading it. The atmosphere was well fleshed-out in the writing. What I connected with the most was the main character Harlow. I found her perspective to be worthy of being told and her misfortunes to be genuinely worthy of sympathy. I appreciated her character and levelheadedness as a protagonist. The rocky relationship between Harlow and her sister Blaise certainly reflected the typical tension between older and younger siblings. I definitely sympathised with Harlow’s frustration with the decisions and behaviour of her younger sister. The author provided a commentary on the modern abuses of technology which was unexpected but definitely thought provoking. What lost my interest somewhat was that the first half of the book felt too slow, the pacing being a little off. By the end, the big reveal also didn’t feel as impactful as I would have expected. I’d recommend this book to fans of contemporary crime novels which explore family relationships. Gabrielle, QLD, 3 stars

Set in an interesting, rugged and beautiful location, this thriller went from being what I expected to be a predictable plot line to a page turner that I couldn’t put down. The only problem with this book was that it ended where it did, and I was left wanting another chapter. An interesting thriller that highlighted some of the dangers of our technologically advanced world and the perception we have of what’s real and what’s fake. Hannah, SA, 3 stars

Sisters Harlow and Blaise join forces to search for their missing father in the winter of Winnipeg. Coming from a warm climate I found it interesting to read about frost bite, outdoor clothing, hand warmers, exposure and snow, lots of it. The plot of the story is quite good but some of the scenarios a little ridiculous. The story flowed along however, and it wasn’t until the end that the main villain was revealed. Sometimes we hold onto a grudge against someone and continue to believe the worst and this was the case with Harlow about her sister. I would be keen to read Dark Mode Di, NSW, 3 stars

        Synopsis

When you can fake anything, how do you know what’s real?

Harlow Close has made a career as an influencer uncovering the secrets of Winnipeg, dubbed ‘North America's strangest city’. The region is renowned for its sub-zero temperatures, dropping to minus 40 degrees – sometimes for months at a time. Yet, it’s not just the frigid winters and geographic seclusion that render Winnipeg peculiar.

When Harlow’s father mysteriously disappears amid a brutal cold snap, suspicions of foul play arise. It’s not like Scott to miss phone calls – and he’s been even more cautious since that time he was catfished by a romance scammer. Unhappy with the pace of the police investigation, Harlow launches her own search, enlisting her sister Blaise’s reluctant help.

As Harlow struggles to uncover what happened to her father, she’s forced to question everything and everyone around her – including herself.
